My daughter will be using her Dell laptop that she's used at home, hopefully it suits her in college as well.
Mine had theirs provided in high school by the school (and their old ones aren't working), so we had to get new ones, unfortunately. My daughter will be using her Dell laptop that she's used at home, hopefully it suits her in college as well.
My son had a pretty specific requirement from his major (game design). He had to buy the MacBook Pro 15". It is the most expensive computer that has ever entered our house! I actually upped the amount on the electronic portion of my renters insurance to make sure we had enough to cover it! Both sides of our family were really great and very generous with his High School Graduation presents so that he could afford to buy the computer. He is completely in love with this computer (which is good because it will need to last him well past college!).
Depending on your insurance policy deductible, you might want to consider a student policy for your son. Our homeowners has a high deductible so even though DD's belongings would be covered, she doesn't own enough to make a claim.
Dh purchased a policy for DD20 two years ago from http://www.nssi.com. We went with a $50 deductible and estimated the value of her belongings. The premium is only $70-80 per year.
Freshman year- no problems. Last Fall, first day of classes, she drowned her Macbook. She took it to the Apple store, DH filed the claim, we paid the $50 deductible, and NSSI sent us a check for $750 to cover the repair.
If we never have another claim in her remaining two years, it's been worth the cost of the policy.
I also recommend AAA if your student will be driving far from home. DD is 4 hours away and used it twice freshman year. Once for assistance changing a flat and once for a tow to a mechanic. Some friends have suggested that DH could have just taught her to change a flat but her school is in a major metro area. She drives weekly in areas without safe options for changing a tire.
DH and I did some research and already had a reliable mechanic sourced before she needed it.
Good luck to you all. I'm very happy that I don't have to help anyone move this month or say any goodbyes.

Yes, I posted this yesterday. Are any of you purchasing a laptop lock for your kids? My daughter just bought a Macbook Air - quite an upgrade from the Chromebook she has used for the last 4 years. I'm nervous about someone walking off with it, but not sure if they are worth it or used much. Any insight would be appreciated!
Not too worried about it getting stolen, as DD will keep it close to her, and I did notice in walking around the school that many students were using them. Campus police at orientation did mention being careful with electronics if using public transportation. I'm more worried about accidental damage or technical problems, but we did get the insurance package. Was going to ask you guys what your students are using for college computers, but my two made their decisions today, we ordered them, and they're on their way! DD got a MacBook and DS got a PC.
Where did you order it from? Apple? We ordered her macbook on August 2 and it is still not here. I didn't realize it would take so long. It is coming from China and yesterday it had made it to Alaska. This morning it said Louisville, and for some reason when I track on the computer now it says it is back in Alaska! EEk, I hope that is wrong. I tracked from my phone and the last thing is still Louisville. Not sure why I am getting different answers when I am doing the same thing, tracking from the email they gave me. I had tried in store pickup, closest Apple store is about an hour and half away, and it was saying it would take even longer for that. Aug 12 versus Aug 10 for home delivery.

Yes, just from apple store.
