High School class of 2011

Mine is now living in an apartment and won't actually return to school until Winter quarter. He got a 6 month long internship this summer and is in the middle of it. He seems so grown up!

He is in an apartment too with the same roommates as last year and freshman year. Guess the University knew what they are doing!

He worked at an internship for Deloitte this summer. Same gf since he was a freshman in hs, so both Mom's are waiting for a ring. SIGH!

Well, after a rough start the first semester of freshman year (Oh, how I dreaded those 3am phone calls!), after winter break, she settled in just fine. She has started her clinical rotation at the hospital and seems to have adjusted well.

My nephew is also attending the same school and has a car, so DD will come home on some weekends when he does to pick up a couple of shifts at work. She is lucky that they will put her on the schedule whenever she is home.

No posts in over a year? How are our college juniors doing?

Mine is doing good. He has an apartment with 3 friends this year. Being on the 3rd floor its too hot. They are hoping to move to the first floor next year but are refusing to move the couch. They said it will be a house warming present for the next group. Not sure how that will go but its not my problem.:rotfl:

We realized a couple of years ago that we are going to have a college grad and a high school grad at the same time.

Hard to believe they are more than halfway through with college.

Mine is studying abroad this semester. I kind of pushed her to do it, so I was afraid it might not turn out well, but so far she seems to be loving it. She's like that in general- sometimes needs a push out of her comfort zone.

She absolutely adores her school. The sobbing, weeping, clinging to me daughter that I dropped off there a few years ago now gets teary eyed when she thinks about leaving campus in two years.

Hope everyone else's student is as happy with their experiences as mine has been.

Mine is having the time if his life! He was hired as an RA this semester and is working with the Admissions dept as a tour guide.
I can't believe we're halfway to graduation already.

DD is doing a semester in Paris !!! This is a tribute to her hard work and perseverance because she got a scholarship to cover most of the cost !
(We probably couldn't have done it otherwise.) She is living with a French family and is getting along really well with her 'host mom.' She is learning so, so much and loving the opportunity to experience a different culture. (Although she is not loving the hand-held 'hose' she has to use in place of her American rainfall shower head! ;) ) I am so happy for her but also a little melancholy as I think it will be a quite different and 'grown-in-many-ways' young woman who comes home for Christmas. But isn't that really what we ultimately want for our kids. :lovestruc:

So how are your students doing? DS20 is on schedule to graduate with a degree in Sociology next spring. He came home this past weekend and it is always bitter sweet when he leaves to head back to school. He is planning on going to grad school and has consistently talked about going to the University of Texas in Austin (we live in the north Dallas suburbs). But yesterday, he started talking about going to grad school in CA. He is considering Berkley, Stanford and the University of California in LA.

I know we all think our kids are amazing, but he really is! LOL

I am so very proud of how hard he has worked and want him to be amazingly happy and chase his dreams, but I am definitely going to miss seeing him every few months. I guess I am pouting a bit and feeling afraid/excited all at the same time. I would never discourage him from going and I do think he should go. It is just hard on this momma!

What are you kids up to? How is going?

My DS is on target to graduate with a degree in forensic science next spring.
It seems I see less and less of him now, he spent spring break in Delaware with Habitat for Humanity, and early April in Myrtle Beach for the Quidditch World Cup. He was home this weekend for two days, long enough to eat everything we have, get a haircut, and pick up a new laptop that I got for him.
He's looking for internships right now, he's hoping for something in forensic pharmacology, but will settle for type of forensic work. He'll be spending the summer at school doing some drug identification research work, which he started this semester and the professor would like him to continue with.

I can't believe we are talking graduation already so soon, and watching our kids choose grad schools and grad programs. Where has the time gone? Sunrise, Sunset....

I am so glad to see this thread pop up!

My DS is doing fine! He is finishing his jr year at U of Ill , major in Acctg/Finance and he is working at Deloitte this summer, was there last year too; and I am hoping that they love him and he gets a job offer for after graduation. His GF (since freshman year of high school) is graduating college this year and is going to grad school. His plans are to work for her last year of grad school, live at home, save lots of money and then get married to her.

WOW! I cant believe I said that!

I am so not ready for this stage at all!

Well, DD21 got off to a wobbly start in 2011. She went away to a college she thought was her dream come true--it wasn't. In fact she became very depressed at one point and I thought we were going to have to bring her home. She recovered and finished out the year but she declined to go back.

After taking a semester off to figure things out, she started culinary school at a local community college, found a job cooking in a café and landed a pretty nice internship at a well-respected bakery. All was going well, and then she got really sick last September. She had to drop out at mid-terms because she was hopelessly behind. For awhile there she felt rather bereft and at a loss as to how to move on.

But hope always rises to the top~! She discovered another culinary program near UGA, which is where at least half of her friends are. She transferred up there in January 2014 and moved in with her BFF. They get along beautifully. DD found a job in another well-respected bakery, is working full-time and going to school nearly full-time. She LOVES her new program, her teachers and her classmates. She has been able to make friends there and is doing very well. At this time she has about a year left. When she graduates in Aug 2015 she will have her Associates Degree in culinary arts with a special certification in Baking & Pastry Arts.

I am so proud of DD. This hasn't been an easy road to travel, but she has made the journey her own. I'm most proud that she has looked deep inside herself to figure out what's best for HER life. She had to let go of the "normal" college expectations to make her own way. DD has a lot of ambition and plans for her future and I think she's going to do just fine. :goodvibes

I am enjoying reading some of the updates on the class of 2011. My DS is a junior in high school and just now really starting to think of life after high school. Not sure what path he will take yet, but he says college is part of it.

Can't wait to see where he is in 3 years :scared1::eek::goodvibes

Hi everyone! I wish I had known about this thread a few years ago. I would have enjoyed the camaraderie of others with kids going through the same things.

Our oldest turns 21 today. He's a junior at a small private college in town and commutes to school. He didn't declare a major until about a year ago when he decided he wants to become a CPA. Since his tuition deal is for only 4 years, he has really had to kick it into gear to meet the 150 hour requirement in that time. I wish he had an internship or job this summer, but will instead be taking classes.

Best wishes to everyone entering the homestretch. I'm glad I found this. Better late than never I suppose!

1st, I am googling the Quidditch World Cup! :goodvibes Sounds like he is doing great! An internship is a great idea, it will give him an edge when applying for jobs.

Marriage? I am definitely NOT ready for that. :scared1: I have told both of my children I am absolutely NOT ready to be a grandma…

Minkydog, your DD sounds like she is doing great! I am a firm believer that college is not for everyone and our “kids” have to find their own path. I am glad she is finding her way.

It is a crazy ride!

DS20 wanted to get a tattoo right when he turned 18. I talked him down and told him he had nothing to lose by waiting. Tons of years to get some ink, lol… The difference between fall of his freshmen year in college and the spring of his freshmen years was huge. I asked him the other day if he regrets waiting to get a tattoo and he said no way! It was funny. He knows that he has changed significantly. DD16 is a sophomore in HS and I am excited to see where she is headed. She does not have a clue what she wants to do yet.

I am so very much hoping this kind of growth will happen to DS at some point. He started school a year later than average, so he will turn 18 this September when he is a senior, but he still seems very immature in so many ways. Reading this thread gives me hope, LOL!

Being a boy, this will help him more than you know! :rotfl:

May 17, 2015. That's graduation day for my DS. I can't believe he's only a year away from graduating college. It has gone so fast. He has been having the time of his life, all my worries and fears about him being alone out there were for nothing, he thrived in the world of dorm life.
What is everyone else's kid up to?

DS21 had a rough freshman year and didn't do well grade-wise - at all! When he came home for the summer, we had a heart-to-heart and determined that he loved the school (good!) but maybe it's time to look at a different major that wasn't so heavily science-based (he had trouble with chemistry, anatomy and physiology to name a few).

Going through the majors offered he/we felt that Construction Systems Management looked like a good fit and he qualified to transfer directly into the major. He is so happy now!! Two years later and he tells me all the time that it's perfect for him and he has managed to bring his gpa up to a respectable level. It will take him 1 extra year to graduate since most of his freshman year won't apply to this major, but since he's happy and headed in a positive direction (one that also has decent job prospects), we're okay with it.

He has also joined a fraternity and it's done wonders for him! I was apprehensive at first, but it's been 1 1/2 years now and his grades continue to improve and he also works at the arena on campus which he loves. Next step will be finding an internship. So even though he won't graduate in 4 years (DS25 didn't either), we're happy he's doing well!

I didn't even think of looking up the date of graduation next year. I should do that. Fingers crossed here that he will walk for his dear old mom! He is painfully shy and would skip it in a minute if I didn't care.

He's in one summer school class now and will take 3 in the late summer session. It appears that he now has all the logistics and approvals worked out to graduate on time, with all the coursework completed to make him eligible to take the CPA exam. It has been nice to see him take ownership of all of it and work through the various roadblocks along the way. (150 hours in 4 years, certain classes not offered at his school between now and graduation, that sort of thing.)

It all really set in when we went to pick our other son up at college on Friday. Graduation was that night for their seniors. Parents and students were all over campus getting prepared for the big night. It really dawned on me then that we'll have a graduation next spring too.

May 17, 2015 will also be my daughters graduation. I watched this years graduation online this morning. All I can say is I will probably be a blubbering mess next year, because I got teary-eyed watching some of her friends graduate.

She has had a wonderful experience at her school so far. She studied abroad this past fall semester, and this summer she will begin her applications to physical therapy schools. I truly can't believe how quickly the time has gone by.
