High School class of 2011

Is spring break coming up soon for your kids? Mine will be home Friday for a whole week. I can hardly believe the year has gone so quickly!

DD's university has Spring Break this week...it's great to have her home.

agnes!

Yep he comes home a week from tomorrow..not that i am counting the days..;)

He is looking at internships for the summer and has several interviews. although if he choses not to, he can work at legoland here.

He has been doing great and i am so proud of him. Although I had a bad time when he signed a lease for next year in an apartment. I am not ready for this.

DS is having housing issues for next year. They are out of space - this year they put 5 in rooms for 4! And freshmen get first dibs at the dorms rooms. We are trying to decide what to do. He will wait list for on campus housing (dorm or apartment) but may not get in. Then he will have to decide if he wants an off campus apartment - which oddly would be 10 minutes from our house! I honestly am not sure what is better. He is willing to just move back home and commute but is having fun in the dorm. By fall of 14 the new dorms and apartments will be done and it should be better. At least he can come back home some of the kids are just too far to commute from home. For the school it is great that they are growing so fast but for the kids next year it stinks!

So spring break has drawn to a close
Freshman year is almost over!

Did you file your fafsa? I filed mine back on 1/1/12 and just updated today from "will file" to "already completed" and was able to use the IRS data retrieval tool too.

How are your kids grades? DD's were horrible first semester! But much, much better this semester, yay!

What's everybody doing for housing next year? DD is getting an off campus apartment about 5 mins away from school with her 2 roommates from this year plus one more girl. It's 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom, shared living and kitchen. How awesome!

What else is new with the kids?

DD18 left around 5pm to drive back to college. She has been "home" for a week but we have only seen her about 3 times.:goodvibes Between hanging out with her friends, her boyfriend, and her brother there wasn't much time left for the lame parentals. Ah well, i was young once.

DD is doing okay in her classes. Math continues to dog her and she may or may not pass it. If she doesn't pass math, she will be taking it again this summer. She is planning to transfer to a local community college in the fall anyway, so she will live at home.

Haven't filed the FAFSA yet but I'll get on that this week.

DS also went back last night. He spent the last 3 days of vacation with us at the lake and it was just so nice to have both kids with us hanging out!! He is still on the waiting list for housing for next year so we don't know for sure if he will be home or (hopefully) in the dorm. He is signing up for classes later today but will have to audition to get into 2 of the ones he is signing up for - I hope that goes well! All in all it has been a good year for him. He likes school and has made friends (sadly a few are seniors), he seems pretty involved but not overly so like his last 2 years of high school, he seems happy. I am so pleased about that!

I will have to fill in the fafsa when our taxes are finished but I don't expect any help from it anyway, so I am not in any hurry. The way small business taxes are we look like we make so much more money than actually ends up in our real account. The tax system is just so messed up. But that is a whole nother thread!

Oops! Got a call from DD this afternoon. Seems she left aaaaalll her summer clothes in the laundry basket in her room. A pretty big deal considering that the temps in south Georgia are already in the high 80s to 90s.

Got all the clothes washed and boxed up, with a bag of jelly beans thrown in there for fun.:goodvibes

DS#2 has decided to do summer school..luckily at home..he is going to go to the comunity college near us and take 2 classes and then one online class ..plus he is going back to his job at Legoland...
busy guy!! wonder if he plans to graduate early, get a job, live at home, save MONEY and marry gf ..or go to grad school and then marry gf?

finishes finals on May 11.. then home for the summer.. i do miss him..his sunny face, friends, gf and wonderful helpful him ( when he is around)..

Well freshman year is just about over! I can't believe how quickly that went!

We went up on Sunday and collected the bulk of DD's things. Hopefully she can manage what's left on her own.

Her last final is tomorrow and she'll head home Thurs morning for the summer.

Wow, that's early. I know that D is late...end of the 1st week of June.

DS will be finished on Friday. The year sure did fly by!!! He did get into an on campus apartment for next year. We are so happy about that. A good year for him and now some rest and family time. Life is good!

One more week to go! DD's last final is May 3. I'll run down there on May 2 and hopefully we can get her loaded up while she is finishing up finals. Her school is about a 4hr drive from home, so it will be a looooong day for us.

finals week ends the 8th of June for my DS,

Anyone's kids having growing pains over major choices etc.?

DS got into Electrical Engineering (he has lots of AP's so is ahead of the game) and isn't enjoying his first departmental class. Now he doesn't know what he's going to do and worried it might mean a school change to get what he thinks his second choice major might be.

I keep trying to reassure him, but he's having some "little fish in a big pond" issues since in high school he was more of a big fish/little pond guy.

My son's last final is also May 3rd, last class was Monday. It's hard to believe the year is almost over. We had a good spring break and I'm looking forward to him being home.

Right now, he has a dorm assignment on campus, but he wasn't able to get a room with anyone he knows. They do a lottery system and his online appointment time was one of the last ones, so he barely managed to get a room at all. He's definitely ill-at-ease with it because the roommate situation this year was so disappointing. His first roommate was eventually put on probation for drug use and then transferred to another school altogether spring semester. His second roommate is local and was never ever in the room. They're friendly, but not really friends. The dorm he got into is going co-ed for the first time in the fall and he doesn't know anyone who got in there.

disykat--he has mentioned possibly switching to education, maybe teaching business and marketing at the high school level and coaching, working toward an admin/athletic director track. If he does that, it would be best for him to transfer back to a school in Virginia if this is where he'd want to teach. So he's definitely mulling that over. He has a few friends who are going community college for two years and transferring to VA Tech and he mentioned that he could get an apartment with them if he transferred to Tech Junior year.

At first I felt really unsettled about the whole thing, but then he was talking about two different appointments he'd made at school to talk about options and majors and he seemed to have thought of a lot of different things that would be involved, so I'm feeling better about it. He signed up for courses that would apply to education as well as business. He's taking control and handling everything so I just trust he will do what's best. He even called and had his prescriptions transferred to our local WalMart for the summer without my prompting. Knock me over with a feather.

Does anyone have any tips about what to expect for the summer from our kids who are so used to independence now? I am thinking that the transition back to living at home might be a little bit hard on them and us? I don't really know as DS is my oldest. It may be ok as our family is pretty laid back in summer anyway. What do you guys think?

It will be hard on him to get back to family when he has been so independant all year

rules will be.
i will let him go out and about...
just not too late and dont drive my car drunk.
He still has to let me know where he is going and text when he is leaving..

So how's the summer going?
Surprisingly, ours has had MUCH less conflict than I anticipated. A little trouble here and there but for the most part we all re-adjusted quite well.

DD got her wisdom teeth out on Mon so we've seen more of her this week than we have all summer.

We're starting to think about how we'll get her moved into the new apartment while she's busy with her sorority recruitment...looks like mom and dad will move her in without her. Haven't figured out the details yet.

What's going on with everybody else?

I am so enjoying having DD19 home. Not that she has been at home all that much. DD opted to take College Algebra this summer at the local community college which is about 2 miles from the house. She has decided to live at home to save some money--our FAFSA was so low (EFC=0!) that she qualifies for the Pell Grant, which will pay for all her tuition & fees, and some of her books. Her goal is to graduate with very limited student loans. So far, she's up to $5,000, a very manageable figure I think.

DD wants to move out of her room upstairs next to ours and move down to the basement. We have a small bedroom down there and a larger sitting area. She has washed the walls all by herself--and that was a job because it was extremely dusty & dirty from sitting unused for a couple years. She has put a couple of potential paint colors on the wall. Once we get the old border off the upper walls, she'll start her painting. Then we'll start on the sitting area. I think this will make her a nice little private apartment and it doesn't cost us a thing.

DD had her orientation for her culinary program today. They saw the kitchens and the cafe that the culinary students run on campus. She is very excited and all she has to do is pass the Algebra now and she'll start the culinary program in the fall. She is very happy.

Our next decision is whether to charge DD rent. She does some of the cooking, sewing, gardening and laundry :woohoo: so I'm inclined to let that *be* her rent contribution. She just got a job working at the YMCA at their summer camp and she hopes that will continue in the fall with their afterschool programs.

It is good to have a personal chef

It is great to have a personal chief! Enjoy that!

Our summer has been very low key. DS has been in and out, traveling a bit to visit his Grandparents, seeing friends and working. We have really enjoyed the time with him and are not having any issues with curfew or getting along. I like having him home but I think he is getting anxious to get back to school. While he has enjoyed seeing his high school friends I think he is missing his college friends.
