*HHI Owners and Beach Lovers Group Thread*

Worse here in southwest Virginia. No power since early morning Thursday. None expected until Tuesday. New River crested at 22 feet when flood stage is 9+ feet. Water in nearby town of Galax has boil water or bottled water only order. Roads and bridges washed out. Not as bad as Asheville or Chimney Rock, but darn severe for the mountains. HHI sounds pretty good right about now. pirate:
I feel for you. As a New Orleans girl, my experience with post-hurricane misery goes back to Betsy. So I hope power comes back and repairs can get started sooner.

Couple of things...

1) we had studio 1213 and whenever the AC cut on and shut off it made a loud slam sound. I told the desk upon check out and she said maintenance would check it out. Hopefully I saved the next guests from being woken up all night. My DH managed to sleep great...typical. I did okay but did wake a few times to the sound.

2) there were 2 manatees over in the marina hanging out close to the walkway. So so cute.

We had two trips booked this year in studios. I really wanted a 1-BR though so we cancelled our spring trip to upgrade to a 1-BR for our fall trip. We are supposed to be leaving this Friday for a quick stop in Savannah to see my DH's uncle who we haven't seen in years and then on to DHHIR on Sunday for five nights there. First time we booked on cash and got an AMAZING deal. Unfortunately, we found out today that my MIL broke her back and has to have a very risky surgery later this week. We are looking at rebooking end of October or mid-November, but availability is spotty (on cash and points). We are also dealing with DH having 5 (maybe 6) more surgeries in addition to his hip replacement he had a few weeks ago, so we have to book around those dates. We are living in a nightmare trying to renovate our house to make it more accessible for him. My mom just finished chemo and did fairly well, so we thought we were good to go on this trip. 2024 has NOT been our year! It's been over a year since we've been to HHI, and it is our place of tranquility. With all we are going through, we really needed this trip! We miss DHHIR!!!!!

:grouphug: Best wishes that all the surgeries, renovations, and other issues come out okay.

DisneyStarWisher, I feel so sorry for you. Yes, I understand how you really needed this trip. DHHIR does have magical powers for health, I say. In 2017, I fractured my pelvis 5 days before we were due to go to the resort for Thanksgiving. I can remember lying in the emergency ward begging the doctor to let me take the trip. Meanwhile DH was looking at me as if I was going insane. With some caveats and restrictions, the doctor finally let me go, and I swear I was recovered far more by the end of the trip than I would have at home. Hopefully, you'll be able to take your trip soon.

Update--We were able to rebook the trip for the week of 10/20. A 1-BR just happened to pop up on the website for cash this morning. We didn't get quite as amazing of a deal (no member discount), but we were able to get 5 nights together. Now to get through MIL's surgery which is in a couple of days, and we have to make sure DH can go then since he has surgery on the 15th.

🤞I hope everything works out so you can go on your trip the week of 10/20 and everything works out well.

Another update--I was able to change our 1-BR reservation to a 2-BR with a member discount, so it ended up cheaper (still more than our original reservation we had to cancel though). We had 13 banked points that we were going to lose, and a 2-BR was the only accommodation available on points for the first night of our trip. So we booked that night with points and then the next four nights on cash with the discount. Also, DH got the okay that he can travel after his surgery. I have to do all the driving though. Good thing we are taking two days to get there and possibly two days to get back. I just wish our kids could go. A 2-BR is going to feel lonely without them. That's the only time we've booked a 2-BR is when the whole family can go. I'm going to leave the invitation open for them just in case.

The only thing is now I'm worried about being in a building with no elevator. DH had hip replacement almost two months ago but is still dealing with swelling and some pain. It's not so bad though that we aren't planning on renting trikes for some occasional rides. I just don't want him having to walk up and down stairs the whole trip. I know the only building with an elevator that has a 2-BR is Building 28. How many 2-BRs are there in that building? What floors are they on? I have anxiety issues due to noise and always request top floor, but I think I would take anything in Building 28 to help my DH out! And if we can't get Building 28, I will take a first floor room in another building just so he won't have to walk up and down two flights of steps.

MIL's surgery is tomorrow. We are praying everything goes well, and then we can look forward to a much-needed vacation in a couple of weeks to our favorite home away from home!

All buildings, except 11 & 12, have four 2BRs. There are two 2BRs on either end of each building--one 2BR upstairs and one 2BR downstairs. Thus, each building has two ground floor (well, up one flight of stairs) 2BRs and two second floor 2BRs. For bldg 28, the elevator actually stops at both the ground floor and the second floor.

Update--I just called DHHIR. The "lift" (she informed me it is not an actual elevator) in Building 28 is down and probably won't be up and running in a couple weeks when we arrive for our trip. Not sure what building we will request. I'm afraid we will have to request first floor (to make it easier on my DH), but I don't know if I can handle the noise above us. Sure wish they would fix the insulation issue between floors.

Since we won't make it out to DL/DCA in May like originally planned, we're doing a WDW/HHI combo trip instead. We did a condo on the beach this past May. I did like being able to walk right out onto the beach, but really missed having food available (ok, ok, it was really Dole Whip I missed) and a good pool with a slide.

That is correct. (FYI we are currently in Building 28 on the first floor. We have friends with a disabled girl staying with us next week. We will have to help her up about 10 stairs to get to the room). Happily, I haven't noticed noise above us.

Wow, 6 months of work. Perhaps they are painting the buildings?

Oh poo! We always travel the first week of October. Sure wish they would wait until later in the off-season.

That’s what I was thinking as well, painting and perhaps replacing the roofs?
