I booked day by day at the 7 month mark for the week 7 months out from the Christmas Holidays. I don't know if alot of other people were busy but we didn't have any problems.
Being your are trying for a 2 bedroom and that's what the resort has the most villa size wise, it might be worth a try.
We booked a 2BR at the 7 month window for the week of Thanksgiving. We had no problem. I did call day-by-day to make sure we got the days we wanted. We are now waitlisted for a GV for three days of that week. So far no luck, but it is still a few months away and I have my fingers crossed that a little Pixie Dust will come our way. Our son is career Army and is about to deploy to Iraq for the third time and he will be coming and going alot on this deployment. They live at Fayetteville, NC along with our daughter and her husband. We are hoping to get everyone at HH for Thanksgiving. Wish us luck!
As with the onsite resorts, busy season at HH is not always busy season everywhere else. The hardest time to book HH is the summer. I think you will have a far more difficult time booking in July than the other posters reported at the Holidays (which are in autumn and winter, slow season for HHI). Many of us have found that a summer ressie is somewhere between impossible and close to impossible. If you have your heart set on it, I would try and find a HH owner that would trade ressies (if you are an owner) or rent you a ressie.
No problem for us this year. We booked a 2BR 7 months out for the week of July 4, had to waitlist for July 3, but it came through about 1 month later. We had a studio for that date as a backup.
We will be there July 16-20 this year in a 2bdrm. I had no trouble at all making reservations at the 7month window. I made day by day reservations and got what we needed.
Thanks all for the input. Are first choice is to trade out to the new Marriott property in Myrtle Beach, but if that doesn't come through, plan b is to try for a week at HHI in July. If that doesn't come through plan c is probably a trip to Vero Beach which by itself isn't a bad plan.
We're headed to HH for the first time in a few weeks. I made the 2BR reservations one week into the 7 month window, and got everything except the Thursday night. I waitlisted for that, and it came through sometime in April. Remember, HH has mostly 2BR units, so they are actually easier to get than a studio or 1BR.
I also added a Friday and Saturday night back in April on cash rather than points...at the DVC member discount rate!
Just made my reservation for Capt. Scott's dolphin tour. Counting the days... (and ohhhh sooooo thankful that they *don't* have high speed internet...one more reason not to have to take the laptop along! )

Don't hold your breath on MB for July. For DVC HH, a 2 BR is your easiest catch since that is the largest number of units at the resort. HH has been easier the last 3 or 4 years for summer but don't expect that to continue. I'd agree with the other Marriott's on the Island. I'd say Barony, Surfwatch and Grande Ocean are all equal to or better than the DVC resort at HH depending on what's important to you personally. And they'd be less points for 7 days (270 vs 330) for a 2 BR.
We were able to book a 1BR two years ago at HHI during August with no problems at the 7 month window... We had to wait list it, but it came through with 6 months to go...
We also booked a studio last year in August with 1 month before to go...
