Hey parents! Are you raising a generation of nincompoops?

I just find it bizarre that the mother of the child who doesn't know how to use a can opener didn't take that as an opportunity to actually TEACH the girl how to do it. Let's just marvel at the fact that she doesn't know how and write about it. If the kid doesn't have basic skills for life, then how is that anyone's fault but that child's parent?

You know it isn't just kids. Everytime I read here on the boards, "If you don't stay onsite, you have to figure out how to get around, how much the tickets cost", etc. I always want to say, "C'mon, you're an adult, get a calculator or do the math on paper" They treat Disney World packages like vacations for the unthinking.

Please note that I am NOT including everyone in this group, just those that have trouble figuring out how to use a calculator or how to use even simple arithmetic.
Well, now you've introduced something that bugs me: "Can anybody tell me how to... ?" or "Can anybody tell me how much it costs to...?" :rotfl2: Yes, I can - but chances are I'm going to look it up online - so why can't you (not you, rie'smom, but the person asking)? Yes, I may look it up in a book - I still have the 1993 Unofficial Guide for fun ;) - and I just know a lot of stuff.

The weather questions:

Can you tell me what the weather will be like in July 2012?
Is it warm enough to swim in January?
Should I bring a sweater for the evenings when I go in July?
OMG, it's going to rain during my trip, what will I do?

1. No.
2. Maybe but doubtful
3. Heck NO
4. Brings us back to nincompoop.

It is so hard not be snarky when I see these questions. I so want to ask a mod to make a sticky telling everyone with weather related questions to go to weather.com.

My other nincompoop favorites:

Questions that begin with:
This is a stupid question but
This is a weird question but
There is probably no question in either category that has never been asked.

And TA DA:

This might have been asked before, instead of buying a hopper can I use the same ticket at 2 parks on the same day? Nope, you're a genius no one has ever asked this in the history of the DIS.

For weather and other incredibly obviously questions, I've been tempted to use "Let Me Google That For You", but I haven't yet because I don't want to get points or scolded.

But it would be fun.

I don't think the point of the article was to have people chime in that their child can use a can opener or whatever.

I think the point of the article seems to be that critical thinking skills are disappearing. I mean, realistically, a can opener is a fairly simple thing, and yet there are people who truly don't know how to use one & don't make an attempt to try to use it. Not that they can't, but that they lack the initiative to even try and figure it out.

My pet peeve here is similar. It is the "Has anyone ever been on Space Mountain". Or, "Has anyone ever had a hangnail?", etc. Of course there is someone here that has done all of that. If you have a specific question about the experience, why not just ask it?:yay:

I do believe that too many kids just have not developed basic and independent living skills... The parents just have not facilitated it!

I do think that there are parents who simply do/have done everything for their kids.... completely.... thru young adulthood.

And, really, it's hilarious...
There are parents who would argue that they should raise and teach their children so that they will be 'good lovers'. ( the ONE thing that parents can't and shouldn't have anything to do with )
