Here now....rocky start, and some great CM's

Am I the only one that isn't happy that this family took a sick child through the parks and restaurants? Obviously what the child had was contagious since now both parents got it, and spread his germs around.

No you're not the only one. Based on the other thread the OP started
(it's locked now) you must be one of the rude, nasty, mean... WDW board DISers.:grouphug:

Since this post is re-circulating...I will chime back in for those who think we had no business being in the parks with a sick kid.

I had taken my DS to the Dr his first day. We were told by a DOCTOR that after his vomiting ended and no fever, he would not be contagious. His vomiting ended the day before we even got on the plane. He never had a fever. He just didn't feel well. I would NOT have taken him into the parks with active vomiting or fever. He woke up feeling fine....then as he got run down and tired just didn't feel well. The rest of the week, DH and I just didn't feel well. No throwing up and no fever, just felt yucky and no energy and no appetite. The first day we were sick we stayed in the hotel just to rest and feel better. I can say the dining plan was a waste for our family who just didn't feel like eating!:)

Do you know how many people were walking around coughing all over things at the parks? One man on a bus kept coughing right into the back of my head without covering. Does that mean he may have been contagious and should not have been on that bus? Who knows, not for me to judge. I was irritated about the lack of basic manners with covering a cough...but that was it. Kids were sneezing all over without covering their sneezes. I think those things that actively spread germs onto every surface is likely more contagious than what my family had, considering we weren't throwing up in the parks or coughing or sneezing on anyone.

So to make a long story short, yes we didn't feel well, but not sick enough to ruin our vacation. We made the best of it and went with the flow and missed out on things so we could rest more...but I wasn't complaining about it either. My biggest disspointment was not being able to indulge in all the junk food I had my heart set on! My whole point of the thread was to say no matter how much you plan and plan, you can't control everything. We go into the parks knowing it's one giant germ fest and we make sure to practice extra good hygiene and hand washing.

You are right. You can't control everything only what your family does. I am confused though, I thought you said your son threw up in the restaurant? I also agree about poor manners with a cough. I will take this opportunity to remind those that cough and sneeze to do so in your elbow. I see so many people doing so in their hands then touching things with their germy hands and spreading germs. As an aside, my son and I have asthma and allergies. The humidity and some of the flowers in WDW cause us to sneeze, cough so although we "sound" sick we are not contagious.

I hope you get the opportunity to return when you are all feeling better and can partake in the yummy treats.

Phew, I felt bad thinking "Oh I feel so bad for the people who had to sit around a sick kid in the confined space of an airplane -- hope they don't get sick during their vacations now".

Not that if my kid were sick I'd cancel a whole vacation ... I'm so torn :confused3

I am so sorry that you had some rough patches during your WDW Vacation, it can be stressful to spend so much time planning the perfect trip and have something uncontrollable happen - especially when its one of your little ones not being able to enjoy the magic. Sounds like you were able to bounce back some and hopefully enjoy some of your trip.

As for the posts regarding the frustrations about taking family members to the parks that are not 100% healthy. What world do you live in? From walking around your block, going to school, grocery shopping, public transportation, work restrooms, going to Disney....there is NO escaping germs. Unless you want to live in a bubble.

Best advice is to make sure you and your family are taking all the right steps to avoid as many germs as you can and be healthy and move on with your life.

UNLESS, you can positively say that you can guarantee that you or your children have never been in public and spread 1 germ (which is virtually impossible). Disney Parks, Doctor's Office, or McDonalds - happens everywhere and sometimes before you even realize your child is sick.

If you have children, you know there is a balance between determining the severity of an illness and doing what is right for your child and family at that time. If my child has the sniffles but would be devastated if she missed a parade, guess what I am going to do!:cool2: As long as your child isn't walking up and licking my hamburger - do what you feel is right for you and your family.

...Not that if my kid were sick I'd cancel a whole vacation ...
I would. Well, I'd postpone it. Would. Have.

Everyone should make their own decisions, of course, but it is not a ridiculous idea to postpone a vacation if a family member is ill.

Im so sorry your trip is going so roughly...same thing happened to us one year going to Cozumel...doc told us it was 24 hours with our kid and not to worry...ended up lasting the whole week we were there..not a thing you can do either except try make the best of it. Hopefully you can salvage a little bit of your vacation towards the end and I hope you all feel better soon. Just ignore the people on here that are on thier soapbox...jeeze...as if the OP isnt feeling bad enough you lot have to lay into her...talk about kicking a man when hes down...shame shame shame on you all. But we should all be as perfect as you all !!!
Hugs to you OP:hug:

Ohhhh....never heard of that. Have to look into it. Is it expensive?

They make a powder for for kids called Florastor. My son takes it when he takes a strong antibiotic to keep his stomach in balance.

OP, your not a bad parent. You did what you thought was best. I am sorry for your families illness while on vacation. It has happened to the best of us. As for the self-rightous germ-a-phobes, I am pretty sure their kids have infected others also in the past. ;)

Seriously? So, if you'd spent a few thousand dollars on things like airfare, lodging, rental car, whatever... you'd just forfeit that because your kid has a mild illness? I wouldn't. I'd determine whether I felt like it was appropriate to go out into the parks depending on how he/she was feeling at that time, but I'd sure as heck not sacrifice thousands of dollars for an illness that might be transient and gone in 24 hours.

Sorry for the illness you had to deal with, OP. :( Not the way anyone wants to spend a vacation.

I'm sure my son has infected other kids. However, it never happened in a theme park, at the movies, in a museum... If I knew he was sick, I kept him in.

That doesn't make me a perfect parent or a germaphobe.

Believe or not, some people purchase trip insurance.

I'm going to move this to our trip report board.

I have to say that after reading this thread, and others like it, I am so glad we choose to drive over flying. Now I can only hope my ex does not get sick thanks to those bringing sick family members on the plane in June when he flies out here.

I would cancel a trip if my child was sick with vomiting and such or a fever and I am pretty sure that many airlines would work with the families as they just never know the extent of the illness. Look at the cases of severe illnesses being spread on flights and how many people have been affected.

As for the individual with the comment about the "self-righteous germaphobes", there are children who have ended up almost dying because people don't care what they bring to the parks or the schools. Maybe when your child ends up in the hospital from an illness shared by another child you would care but don't be a jerk to those who do take issue with it. It makes me so mad to see these kids drugged up on motrin to mask a fever and sent off to school to expose kids to everything under the sun. Having a child that has missed 30 days of school this year because of careless parents knowingly send their sick kids to school is insane.

Want to share a tip with you. The next time someone is not feeling well try this product Oscillococcunum. Most drugstore carry it. We always have this one hand at home and take some with us when we travel. You pour it under your tongue and let it disolve. It has a pleasant sweet taste which I equate to putting sugar under my tongue. I can't tell you how many times we have used this product and felt better in no time

Another thing to have on hand when traveling is ginger capsules. Again you can get these at a drugstore in the vitamin section. Good for queezy tummies.

Nopers...she mentioned the part about being a bad momma ;) To me its like going to school. Do you keep kids out of school? There is at least one person sick everyday there. You might not knowingly send your kid to school sick. Just like she might have thought her kid was well (24 hour bug and all) and she found out he wasn't.

Not being a Jerk thankyouverymuch - there wasn't much need in the pp's making the op feel bad for taking im to the park either imo. the self-rightous indication was for all those who act as if they always do the right thing.

Believe or not, some people purchase trip insurance.

True and a good point. I generally don't, but you are right that many people do. So, I'll rephrase to say, "If I didn't have trip insurance, I wouldn't cancel an entire trip and sacrifice thousands for what might be a transient illness."
That's more accurate. I have no idea if the OP had trip insurance. If she is like me and doesn't typically invest in trip insurance, then I can understand why she wouldn't cancel the trip.

Many childhood illnesses are contagious prior to evidence of symptoms. So, it's always possible that our children infect others (or we do) in public venues and we aren't even aware it has happened. Makes the good advice the PP posted about protecting yourself from contagions all the more valuable.

You're right. But as soon as you find out the kid isn't feeling well, you deal with it.

I did not send my son to school if he was sick. If I got a call during the day that he was sick, he was picked up ASAP.

The OP has stated several times that her child did not want to leave the park.
There are times when parents have to decide what is best, not the kid. If a child is given the option of going back to the room to rest or staying in the park, they will pick stay in the park.

I do agree with this...i would have also left when I saw he was not better.
