Drool!!!!!! Oh man, how to convice 'my better half" that I need this. It includes a hotshoe! I'm guessing that there is no S4 because of the # of megapixels. S2 = 5MP, S3=6 MP, (missing S4=7MP), S5=8MP...

Oh, the evil tempation.... I could 'share' a 580ex flash with my dad and his 20D... Ohhhh.

Aparently S4 is a dirty word or something like that in Japan.

Also, it is about time they released this thing!!!! We all knew it was coming, but didn't know when.

I just scanned through the specs and I have to say that I am not that impressed. Where are the big improvements over the S3? It does have Digic III and face detection, but it still has the same small sensor and now they are going to try to pull more MPs and ISO out of it. I doubt it will really improve over the S3. The IQ might actually be worse than the S3. IMO this was the most important thing that needed an upgrade.

I do like that there is now a hot shoe and longer movie lengths, but that is not where the most improvements were needed. Where is RAW support? If it is there, I didn't see it. This seems more like a cleanup of the complained about features than anything else. Is it better than the S2/S3? Yes. Is it worthy of an upgrade from those two models? IMO No.

The number 4 is unlucky to the Japanese, they tend to skip it like many European and US buildings don't have a 13th floor.

Unfortunately, although there are some improvements, I doubt the S5 is going to be substantially better than the S3.

My reasoning: They're jamming more MP into the same sensor AND they've upped the ISO (more MP and more ISO seem to be the latest marketing strategies for *all* of the major camera companies) ... that means you're going to get grainier pictures. The S3 is already barely tolerable at ISO800!

The hot shoe and slightly bigger LCD is a nice addition [EDIT]as is the ability to take 4G of video in one shot (~32min)[/EDIT], but hardly something worth upgrading [EDIT]from an S3[/EDIT] for.

However, if someone were coming fresh into the high-end P&S market, I'm sure it's a *great* choice ... just like the S3, now....

Hmm... the S5 is still not very wide at the wide end, and it looks like there's still no remote shutter release... tsk, tsk. At least they didn't try to cram in 10mp... that'll be the next one, no doubt.

Update: In regards to what I just posted? Well, I just checked Amazon.... they are $7 MORE than when I bought mine yesterday.

The hack works for DIGIC II processors, the S5 is a DIGIC III.
