Help with general dress styles & designs?

Hi guys!

So, I started looking at wedding dress pictures just to get an idea, & silly me who never even went to her high school prom knows nothing about styles!!.

Anyways, there is a designer I like named Mori Lee-have you heard of her?
I love her dresses! But most of the ones I found that I liked are actually prom dresses that would look fantastic in white! I especially like the ruffles on the bottom.

Based on these pictures, if you were going to go to a bridal shop, how would you describe the way these dresses are styled, the dress cuts, their bodice designs & how the bottoms bunches up?

Hi! A and C are A-line dresses with pickups (the bunches) and sweetheart necklines. B is a ball gown with tiers/ruffles. But you prolly won't have to describe them if you just bring your pictures with you when you shop - hee hee!

I agree with Carrie and the pictures would give them a much better idea as to what you are looking for.

BTW C looks a lot like a dress from Maggie Sottero that I am considering.

What a I am today!! It didn't even occur to me that I can just bring these pictures into a dress store!

Have you seen bridal dresses that look similar to these ones I posted? Similar style and design but white and made as a wedding dress??

Ooh I love the "pick-ups" on that dress! (thanks Carrie for the new vocab word I learned today! ) So pretty!

The dresses with the pick ups are very popular right now. Almost every major dress designer has some in their line. That Maggie Sottero one is beautiful- I think she really has the market on this style of dress. I haven't seen any with the teired ball gown though. Of course, once I found my dress I stopped looking really.

Is it bad to be deciding on a "pageant dress"? & is it weird to get married in a blue-ish color dress like that?

It's not bad or weird at all - I wish I could have found a wedding gown in some color besides white!

Also, looking at quinceanera/prom dresses is a smart move because they are way cheaper than anything with "wedding dress" on the tag - even though they're almost identical!

So they are almost identical-whew! that's the answer I was looking for. I haven't seen to many bride gowns in general. But I think I am just drawn to this one (that blue-ish one above). I showed my DF & he thinks it's pretty too.

and....it's only $390!!!! Is that a hint that the dress will be cheaply made or something? Or is that just what "pageant dresses" tend to cost?

I want to wear a traditional dress, but that blue is kinda pale, don't you think?

I wonder what kind of veil I would get with that?

Next question is will it look good on! So, how do I go about locating a store that will have this dress? I found this one on an online store. Is there some sort of locator to find out which stores in my state carry this dress so I could go try it on?

It sounds like you need a copy of "Bridal Bargains" by Denise and Alan Fields. It has a big chapter all about wedding gowns and how to buy one without getting scammed. The book is usually less than $10 used on Amazon, and you may be able to get it at your library.

The blue is kinda pale, but it may look great on you - you really have to try the dresses on to know for sure. If you can find out who makes the dress, you can go to the manufacturer's website and use their store locator - almost all of them have one. Bridal Bargains also helps because it lists all the manufacturers and rates them.

So, and again silly question, but is it ok to buy a dress that is cheaply made for your wedding? Do you think this dress will look cheaply made in person?

I man, it's not like I'll wear it again & it's just going to be cased up after the big day, so it doesn't need to be able to last through multiple wearings.

I do know the designer of the dress-it's Mori Lee. She makes bridal gowns, wedding party gowns, prom dresses, and pageant dresses. I looked through her bridal gowns, but none has stuck out to me like this blue one! I'll check for a store locator on her page now-thanks again!!

Thanks so much Carrie! I was able to do a search & found several stores in MA that carry Mori Lee prom dresses, pageant dresses, & wedding gowns. One website even showed that very dress (in a different color)!

I'm gonna have to check this one out-I'll have no clue if it looks ok because I've seen so many things that look great on the rack and then I put it on and....

Only $390!! Maybe I could put the rest of what I would have spent towards our MK photo shoot fund

I think it's perfectly fine to wear a cheap wedding dress, but maybe that's cuz I did You are exactly right - it's just for one day, and it just has to look good. Nobody's gonna be going over the seams and the stitching and looking at the label for the fabric content. It'll look great, and then you can put the money you saved toward an MK shoot or 112 Mickey bars... whatever!

I've never seen a blue veil, but you could always get a cheap one on eBay and dye it the way girls dye their crinolines!

Otherwise, I'm sure a white one would look fine... but let's see how the dress looks on you first!

I agree, don't get anything before you try it on! Different styles look good on different people. I had my heart set on a very simple, plain white dress, but when I tried ones like that on, it didn't look as flattering as a dress in slightly different style. I ended up being pleasantly surprised

I love Mori Lee dresses. I was looking at one of the quinceanera dresses and nearly bought it but then I found this:

and just had to have it. As you can tell, I like big pick-ups! I was going to buy it off the internet as it was half the price (literally) as buying it in the UK so i went to a bridal shop to trying on and ended up ordering it from them. I haggled with them and got such a good deal that it wasn't worth saving some money by going over the internet with customs charges, duty, alterations etc.

I think the best thing you can do is go and try on the styles you like and see if they suit you. You can have anything you like - if you want blue, pink, green with bright yellow spots you go for it!!
