HELP!! What is this????

Is this a hot pixil? It started out as an anoying red dot in any low light shot but it seems to be growing. And now there is a thin red line running down from it. Not sure if you can see it in the full shot but it is plainly visible in the full size to the left of the torch almost to the edge.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but when you look at it in the original version, does it look like a laser pointer to anybody else?? I didn't know if maybe someone just happened to put a laser up there at the right time for you to catch it, or maybe it's something that Disney uses with the character to set off another set of actions, almost like tripping off a ****y trap! Now then, if this happens in the same spot on ALL of your photos, that's a different story.

Looks like a hot pixel to me.... I doubt there's anything you can do to fix it short of asking for a new sensor for the camera. Camera makers rarely cover hot pixel problems, unless excessive, under warranty as they are inherent in all sensors at some level of exposure/ISO.

No, not stupid, because I went back after reading your post and it does look a bit like a laser pointer. But I've never actually had someone's laser pointer show up in a photo I took. (And people use them plenty, even though they're often warned not to.)

Does this show up in any other photos you took around the same time? I'm not up on all the technical jargon related to digitals yet, but wouldn't it show in all the OP's other photos as well? Just curious.

I was thinking the beam from some sort of childs toy as well. Unless you are seeing it in all of your photos taken under those conditions, I doubt it's a hot pixel.

From this comment, I think we can assume that the point and streak are constantly present. The problem is also consistent with the hot pixel example in the Nikonians link.

Sorry, I missed that in the OP. I have to agree, it is probably a hot pixel.

Yes- unfortunately it is on every picture I have taken for the last month or so. I guess I need to send it off to Nikon. Anyone have any experience on how they are with warranty work? Thanks.

I had good luck with Nikon warranty repairs ("Blinking Green Light of Death" on my D70, and a bad metering circuit on my D2h). However, in doing some research on the topic, what Nikon will more than likely do is not replace the sensor, but instead "map out" that bad pixel(s) and have the camera interpolate the missing pixels using neighboring pixel values. Nikon will not replace the CCD unless there are a significant number of bad pixels on the sensor.

Thanks for the info Geoff- Thats fine with me. I just find the dot anoying to pp out of every shot.
