With everything that has been going on in the world, me and my DH need a pick-up. I would like to plan a surprise romantic trip for the two of us--as he has said that he would love for me to just say to him one day "We're going to _________!" It can't be a long trip, maybe just a weekend getaway. I just don't know where we should go? We live in Montgomery, Alabama so something relatively close. I have heard that Savannah, GA is a nice place to visit, but I don't know what exactly there is to do there. Does anyone have any suggestions of

1) Where we could go
2) What fun things we could do there
3) A romantic place to stay

Thanks everyone!!

I got married there :)
It's about 20 minutes south of Atlanta. Doesn't have as much "stuff" to do as in a city, but it's reasonablely priced, has several amazing restaurants, galleries, hiking. And it's just charming. I believe it was recently written up in the New York Times Magazine if you want to google it!

Wow that looks great. I just added it to my To Do list. :)

I don't know, OP, if you'd be interested in a cruise, but I know that my DH said that cruise prices have really plummeted. We're booked on a 5-day out of Ft Lauderdale that went down $500 per person for a balcony. I guess they're having trouble filling the ships. You might be able to get a 3 or 4 day for a decent price. Look on Tuesdays, they're called Happy Hour specials. Have a great trip, whatever you decide.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'm still trying to decide where to go but I have looked at all the places suggested!! I will let you know where I decide and maybe you guys can help me with the final touches!

I am trying to envision how far you are from these places...

A nice romantic weekend in Charleston might be nice!!!

If you are all the way down at Montgomery, how about someplace on the Panhandle. I think there are some nice places that would be a romantic getaway in the Destin area. I think I remember reading about a couple of like 'Inns'. One has a renowned romantic gourmet restaurant with picture windows overlooking the beach/ocean. I think it is the Henderson Park Inn bed and breakfast. We stayed at Sandestin on our last trip. It is very nice, but I am not sure about 'romantic'????

Gawd, I think I would just fall over and die if my husband ever said, "hey, it would be nice if just you and I up and went.........." (sigh) the man doesn't have a romantic/impractical bone in his body. So, be sure and count your blessings!!!!! ;)

Check out the quickie trips on www.cheapcaribbean.com. They usually include air and most are for all inclusive resorts. Depending on how long it would take you to get to an island, it could make for a wonderful weekend away. Heck, Puerto Rico is only 3 hours from Philadelphia. I recommend the Intercontinental Hotel in San Juan in Isla Verde. There is a Ruth's Chris in that hotel and The Palm is next door for dinner. While that's not all inclusive, it is very nice and fun.

Wishing on a star, my DH only mentions how nice it would be to travel if it involves his buddies and golf. I just have to book a trip and tell him where we're going. At least he goes willingly. :confused3

I hear ya - was just thinking a romantic getaway for MY DH would involve dinner at our local Brazillian steakhouse and me being nekkid when we get home! :rotfl: (Joking - while not a romantic, DH has "walked through fire for me".) :goodvibes

Wish I could help more. I personally love Atlanta, although I've done unresearched overnights in Savannah & Charleston. Always wanted to return to Chas'town after finding out all cool things we missed. I'm a major cruise fan, but think they don't lend themselves well to quicky relaxing weekend getaways - too darn easy to get sucked into experiencing everything!!

:rotfl2: Yes, I do feel very lucky. My DH is pretty romantic. Thanks for the suggestion. I think Charleston would be wonderful but it takes over 7 hours to get there from here so I'm not sure it would be worth it for just a long weekend. We love, love, love Destin but we go there all of the time so I was thinking maybe something a little different? Thanks so much for your thoughts though! I definitely want to give Charleston a try when we have more time. I have seen it listed as one of the most beautiful/romantic cities on more than one list.

Yes, I don't think the cruise would be too good for a relaxing getaway! :lmao: I have thought about Atlanta but I'm not sure if the hustle and bustle is quite what I'm looking for. I am going to keep that idea in mind though because my DH has some very good friends that live there and I know he would love to have a surprise dinner with them. I think I might be leaning towards Savannah though. The only thing deterring me from that is the 5 1/2 hour drive. I just question whether or not it's worth it to drive 5 1/2 hours on a Friday and then come back on Sunday.

Thanks for the link! I don't think for this trip that is exactly in my budget, but some time next year we are definitely hoping to go to an all inclusive resort in the Carribbean or Bahamas. I am saving this link for when that time comes!

Our kids go out of state for two weeks every year to visit their grandparents and every year DH and I say we are gonna get away and never do. Well this year we finally did it. We went to St. Augustine Florida and let me tell you it was wonderful!!! The city is so romantic and perfect for an adults-only getaway! We stayed at the Cedar House Inn (check out their website) and everything was top notch. We had a room with a small private balcony and it was so romantic. The owners were fantastic and everything we did (except the St. Augustine lighthouse) ws within walking distance. I would go back in a heartbeat!!!

Ohhh, that is a good idea! I wonder how far away that is from me? OK, I just looked it up and it said 6 hours and 43 minutes. That might count it out for this trip, but what were some of the things you did there? Did yall eat at any good places?

Callaway Gardens?

The Ritz Carlton at Reynolds Plantation? (an hour or so east of atlanta)

We are in MS. It was about 7 or 8 hours away from where we live. We got up real early one morning and head out. Check in at the inn was at 3 and we pulled in around 3:15. We checked out th inn then headed upstairs to change and left for dinner. The inn is in the historic downtown area so we felt like everything was at our fingertips. We walked to dinner (maybe a 5 or 10 min walk) then did some shopping and walked back to the inn. We enjoyed the complimentary wine and our balcony the rest of the night. The next day we had breakfast at the inn (this was fabulous!!) then walked to the fort (the Castillo de san Marcus) Very Pirates of the Caribbeanish! We did some general sightseeing and shopping, we visted the Lightner museum and had lunch there and then later that afternoon we visited the lighthouse. We are big Ghosthunters fans and the lighthouse was on our bucket list. It was very neat! We then had dinner at some little pizza shop and got some ice cream and enjoyed the rest of the evening at the inn. The inn was so great we could have just stayed there and I would have not complained. They have a hottub but we did not use it because the heat index was about 115.(we were just there a few weeks ago) I want to go back next year if we can.

There were LOTS of things to do there but we really just took a laidback and relaxing approach to it all.
