As I stated in an earlier post, my wife, my daughter & I are going to UO/RPH for my daughter's 14th b-day. I want it to be special. I want to be able to do all of the rides but I have issues with coasters. I get dizzy but can control that somewhat by focusing very hard on something or just closing my eyes. But the feeling of nausea is my biggest problem. Is ther anything I can do/take to control that. I've looked at the Hulk, Dragons, JP, Dudley Do-Right & I know she will want to do them all & I want to do them with her.

Please give me some ideas!!!

Talk to your doctor about the transderm scop patch.

I have a terrible time with motion sickness and this does wonders. Biggest side effect for me is cotton mouth, but I can live with that. Just make sure you put it on the night before you plan to attack the rides.

I suffer from dizziness to. My problem is called BPPV for short. Which basically means benign vertigo. I don't really get nauseated but my dizziness can be really bad. My doctor prescribed SERT. Which helps control the dizziness. I'm not sure it will work for you but you could ask your doctor.

Along with the medical information, I would recommend starting off with The Flying Unicorn and see how you do before moving onto Hulk. If you start off with Hulk, it may not be a good day for you. Do the smaller things first and work your way up.

Hi, long time lurker, first time posting. Just wanted to say, I am in a similar boat. Although I LOVE super coasters, the taller faster the better, I do get a little sick on some of the rides, even the Hulk and DD, not bad, but I typically don't ride them that much, although I love the Hulk.

The coasters I like the most are ones that are fairly straight and fast, and tall. Those you shouldn't have too many issues on getting sick. What makes you sick (I'm assuming your like me) is the hard turns and twists, like the Hulk and DD. Speed and height typically won't do it.

When I go to IOA and Universal, I'll ride Hulk once typically, then just concentrate on the other rides, Spiderman, Jurassic Park, the Mummy, MIB etc., also, BTW, the Mummy I have absolutely NO problems with sickness on so you may be able to handle that one no problems, I would recommend you doing Hulk and DD once, then say, if you are feeling bad, just sit still for a while and you should be fine, then just do all the other rides over and over. There are plenty that don't come close to making you sick. My favorite coasters are ones at the Six Flags parks and the ones in Vegas, they are typically just fairly straight, not too many tight turns, fast and tall.

I can ride nearly any coaster, but Hulk DOES make me dizzy for a minute or two at the end...I'm fine after that though and it's well worth it, it's such an adrenaline rush

I think Hulk isn't too bad. The twists and turns aren't tight so you don't really feel it.

My problem only comes when I try to ride the Dragons back to back.

BTW, simple answer is if your worried about truely getting sick for the entire day and it ruining your outing, just skip the Hulk and DD. That still leaves about 90% of the rest of the rides you should be fine with.

IMO the best rides are the tame ones anyway, well maybe not 100% tame, but all things considering, Spiderman, Jurassic Park, Mummy, MIB, Twister, list goes on and on, you should be fine with those.

I have the same problem and I LOVE coasters. There have been many posts about this and I always write the same thing because it works 100% for me.

Forget the patch....for many it causes double vision and dry mouth, racing heart beat etc. . . there are a lot of unpleasant side effects.

What I have been using with great success for many years is Less Drowsy Dramamine. There are no side effects and it works. There is a trick to taking it,(which I learned on a cruise board). I take 2 tablets before going to bed starting the DAY BEFORE going on any rides. Dramamine works for 24 hours. Not only will you sleep off any drowsy part, but you will not have any dizziness or nausea the entire day. Remember to take your 2 tabs every night before going to bed and you will be in great shape.

I am able to ride any coaster, back to back, and over and over again - with my eyes open:) and feel fine.

You can find Less Drowsy dramamine at any drugstore and is sold over the counter. There is just one important rule to taking it - take it hours BEFORE you need it as it needs time to work.

Hope it works as well for you as it does for me:thumbsup2

Good tip for all, I'll have to try that next time. Question though, I have heard of dramamine before and know about taking it before going on flights and stuff, but what the heck is it, and what exactly does it do to you? Just curious.:confused3

This would be my recommendation also. The non-drowsy formula is also the same ingrediant found in Bonine which is another name brand. You can often find the generic version also. It is an antihistimine that works on the inner ear.

Dramamine or Dimenhydrinate is combination of benadryl and the stimulant Theophylline (similar to caffeine)

basically the benadryl acts on the chemical receptors in the body called muscarinic acetyolcholine receptors which helps keep your body from throwing up.

Meclizine is another brand of anti-emetic that is often found on cruise ships.

Does anybody have any luck with using Ginger?

I haven't heard of ginger preventing nausea, but it can cure mild cases of it. However, this is usually true with food or chemical related nausea, not motion sickness. Same with peppermint.

That's very interesting...I had no idea. See? You learn something new everyday on the DIS!

Well this is half true. The Original Dramamine (not less drowsy dramamine) is Dimenhydrinate, which is also found in Benadryl. Less Drowsy Dramamine is completely different from the Original Dramamine. LD Dramamine is meclizine, which is also Bonine. I just prefer the LD Dramamine because the Bonine is chewable and it tastes horrible. I know a lot of people complain that LD Dramamine makes them sleepy anyway. That is because they are not taking it at night so you sleep off the Drowsy part. I still drink (lots) when taking LD dramamine and it does not make me sleepy at all - again I think it's because I take it before bed.

Here is a list of Dramamine products with ingredients: http://www.brands2liveby.com/brand.aspx?id=287

I tried Ginger capsules for a cruise. They did not work for me at all the only thing they did was give me Ginger Burps...GROSS....similar to the Fish Oil burps you get when taking Omega 3 pills:scared1: .

Didn't want to get to technical with salts of or derivatives of. Just wanted give the general Idea of where it came from.

This may sound weird, but make sure you have some sugar in your blood before you ride. Eat some candy or a churro or whatever that gives you a sugar rush. I most definitely get more dizzy on big rides if I haven't had sugar beforehand...it helps me a LOT so it might be worth a try for you.
