Help me Breathe - Portable Air Filters/Purifiers

Since I posted in the smoking thread, it reminded me that I wanted to get some advice on a portable air filter / purifier.

Here's the situation: IL's are renting a house on the Jersey shore this summer and because FIL smokes, they had to rent a place that allowed smoking. Nevermind that he's the only one of the 4 of us who smokes (hubby recently quit).

Anyway, I can't stand the smell and it really bothers my eyes, nose and throat. Not to mention what it's probably doing to my lungs.

Since we'll be there for a week, I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on an air filter or air purifier unit that I could bring with us to use in the bedroom so we'll at least be able to sleep at night without choking. (I plan on being outside as much as possible during the day so I don't have to deal with it then.)

Whatever we get needs to be on the small side since we're going to have to pack it in the car when we drive down there and back.

Will he be smoking inside the house?

Yep. This was the reason for getting a place that allowed smoking.

Over Christmas we were down visiting and he was smoking in the car. Meanwhile I'm burying my face in my coat because it bothered me so much. He thinks opening the window helps, but it only makes it worse. Then he tried to convince us that he really doesn't smoke much at all, only when he's out with us. My husband and I just looked at each other dumbfounded. Why would you smoke more then you're out with someone who doesn't smoke and is really bothered by it?

we bought an "ionic pro" at walmart for around $150. it helps with lingering smoke smells, it also works very well with pollen. some of the packages come with a free (on the shelf they were around $50) plug in unit for a small area like a bathroom.


lord help your in-laws if they ever have to sell their home! our realtor was telling us that to TRULY de-smoke a home runs around 3 or 4 THOUSAND dollars. the duct work has to be cleaned, the walls have to be scrubbed and repainted, everything else has to be specialy cleaned (cuz the smoke settles into any porous materials like wood, grout and the like). some folks think curtailing their smoking to one room makes a difference, but if you have air ducts it just travels throughout the home.

UGH. (We need a puke smilie) That would definitely be a deal killer for me, I would not think of going to spend time in that house.

This is similar to my father who thinks that because they have an air filter that their house doesn't smell at all. Um, yes, it does. And when you're smoking while I'm sitting there in the house, I reek when I leave.

I still can't believe I married a man who smoked. Thankfully, as I said, there's no smoking in the apartment (landlords rule) or in my car, and he tried not to smoke around me. He also knew I wouldn't kiss him after he was smoking. And double thanks now that he's on the patch and smokefree for the past month.

Thanks for the suggestions on air purifiers. I'll definitely be looking into them.


Dan: when they first invited us, I didn't even think about it. But after MIL started talking about how they had to get a place that was smoking and allowed her to bring the cat, it dawned on me that he'd probably smoke in the house. Maybe the one positive is that they plan on spending all day every day down at the beach - which I can't do being the palest member of the family - so at least he won't be smoking inside all day. And since NJ just recently passed the no smoking in restaurants law, that's even better too because I never had to worry about him lighting up when we go out to eat.
