Help! Lettermen Jacket

If you go anywhere else it won't match everyone else's and I haven't seen them much cheaper than $200 anyway unless they are cheapy fake leather.

Have you tried contacting the school to see if there are any other options. There may also be a local store or two that you can get them from. When I got mine, almost 20 years ago, there was at least 1 local store you could get a jacket from and it's where most everyone got their patches.

I wouldn't worry about the jacket matching, my school had more than one style of jacket and it wasn't an issue. We had a couple of different color combinations for our school colors so while all the jacket bodies were maroonish some sleeves were white while others were dark maroon or I think some were black.

Our school pays for the jackets, but other moms have told me we must pay for the patches, etc. and those easily total $300 or more. Oh goody.

Ds17's was just over $300, everyone gets them at a local store. I made sure to order it fall sophomore year when he got his letter, so he could get some wear out of it.

So expensive for something that will never be worn after high school. Definitely no one wore high school letterman jackets in college.

Are these jackets making a comeback? I'll have to pay more attention and see if kids are wearing them again in my area. I second the idea of checking if any local stores carry them. In days of yore they used to carry some items, like gym shorts and book bags.

Ds has worn his jacket a lot, wish I could say the same about dd19's $400 prom dress, although she did wear it twice.

My daughter is a junior and and 3-time varsity on her swim team and has no interest in a jacket. I offered to buy her one but I dodged that bullet! I also dodged the class ring bullet (for now).

ETA: I did get bit on a $140 prom dress that was NEVER worn because of a bunch of girl drama that made the boy disinvite her a week before the dance. Grrrr.....

We buy ours locally but they are still about the $250 with name and lettering in the back.

Our band director orders them for Juniors and Seniors who want them. They are 150 with all the embroidery. I will check the jacket and see if I can figure where it came from.

Back when I was in high school 20 years ago, we bought our from a local sporting goods store. Even then, they were $200.

we purchased both ds's and dd's locally but still well over $200 but the quality is GREAT. the issue w/some of the much less expensive ones is the quality-and when the time comes to have one professionally cleaned (AND REALY RESEARCH who you have locally IF ANY to do this-it takes an experienced cleaner who specializes in it-the only place any of our local stores will use/guarantee is across the state).

yup, not a cheap investment but ds will get 3 full years of wear minimum out of his-and it's the warmest coat he's ever owned.

We buy our locally also they run about 150, last name patch and front name sewn on front plus having the stuff sewn on was extra the School buys the letter, and "patches"

We got lucky with the ring - my daughter's team won the hockey state championship, so the school pays for the ring. Yay. I don't even know if they have jackets for the girls, but no one I know has one.

My school bought us the jacket and the earned patches. Anything beyond that was our expense. Basically I was told by my parents they would pay for my last name to be put on the jacket and a nick-name if I wanted which was like $30 but nothing else. Anything else I wanted on my jacket was up to me.

We earned ours at school so they felt it was wrong to make us pay for something that was earned. I got my for JROTC, FFA, Student Government, National Honor Society, and Academics.

I haven't seen a single high school student with a jacket around here. Are they really still an "in" thing?

I think it really depends on where you are. In Texas they are still a big thing especially if it is a sports letter-man jacket. Wearing the letter-man jacket of a football player as their girlfriend was hot stuff and still is where I grew up.

They are here for the band kids. They can only get them once they become Juniors so they look forward to that and they wear them a lot, at the football games in the stands and everywhere else. They are really warm.

And band kids really don't care if they are an "in" thing or not, it makes them happy to wear them and they have the confidence to enjoy them without worrying about what the rest of the school thinks.

They are popular here for athletics. I thing some marching band kids wear them, but no one gets them for other music letters or academics. It's usually just varsity athletes.
