I've posted this on the photography board but thought I'd try here as well.

My Fuji Finepix F401 Zoom has been fantastic - had it 3 years and it has produced great photographs.

On Christmas Day, after taking a couple of shots, the lens cover refused to open. I can slide it out of the way by hand but the zoom doesn't extend and I get a message saying lens cover and so the button to take the photo won't depress. I have recharged it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Have you tried it with the charger plugged in? Your re-chargeable battery may have past its usable life and therefore not have enough power to move the mechanical parts.

I did wonder about that. Using the direct charger cable (USB type) it won't charge at all, it will only charge by putting it in the cradle and plugging that in. Do you think that might be the problem?

I'll probably take it into the camera shop on Friday when I can get into town, but just seeing if anyone had any ideas now as I'm so impatient :rotfl:

It sounds as if it could be the problem. If your re-chargeable battery is completely drained or "dead" then the USB connection to the PC will not work. Are you able to operate the camera while it is physically connected to the cradle and plugged in?

Thanks Dicky Knee for taking the time to help.

When in the cradle and plugged in, I can operate it ok but only once I've opened the lens cover manually - once I've done that the zoom comes out ok and it takes a photograph. I'm assuming you're right that it's the rechargable battery then - bet they're an arm and a leg :rotfl: Still, I really get on with the camera/software so don't really want to change it.

Just had a quick look on www.batterycentre.co.uk and, if that's what it is, it looks as if a replacement battery is about £12 - so not too bad.
Thanks Joh - not expensive at all and certainly worth a try.
