Dh wants Kindle or some kind of reader for his bday. Can anyone give me any advice on the difference between them all and any good deals? Where do you get the books for them and how much do they cost? Do downloadable books work on all of them or only certain brands (like Ipods)?

Thanks for any advice!! :goodvibes

Do a search here, you will find many threads on this topic :)

I think the best thing to do is have your dh pick the one he wants, since there are differences. You have the option of e-ink readers (like Kindle or nook) and the nookColor which is a back-lit color LCD display. It also can be used for moe than just reading books. The new nook (e-ink) has a full touch screen, the Kindle doesn't. I would have a tough time picking out one for a gift unless I knew specifically what someone wanted in their e-reader.

Kindle is an e-ink, there is no color screen, nook has a color screen but isn't e-ink (it's like reading a computer screen).

The e-ink can be read outside in the sun, it's just like reading a book page. A nook can't, it's like your phone screen, ipad screen, laptop screen.

For me, I don't need color in my ereader so Kindle was the only way to go. I also got a kindle hard cover with built in light so I can read it in the dark. If I fall asleep the kindle turns itself off after 10 mins of not changing the page. Since the kindle is plugged into the cover the light runs off the kindle charge so the light turns off too.

Ask your dh what he wants. To me a nook makes no sense because I can't read it at the beach, for others they want to read magazines so the Kindle makes no sense.

I LOVE my Kindle!

I had the same question but I ended up getting the Nook color. I absolutely LOVE it. Some complain about the bright screen but at night when I am reading in the dark (my favorite way to read!) I just turn the brightness down to where it looks similar to e-ink and it doesn't bother my eyes at all.

If I am outside, I'm usually doing some sort of activity and not just sitting around so I don't need to be able to read in the sun. It works perfect for me but you have to think of the attributes of each that mean the most to you before making the decision. Good Luck!

I just got a Kindle last week & can't put it down. I love it! But I would let him decide. A couple of my friends have nooks but i personally liked kindle better.

The nookcolor has the color screen, the first edition nook is an e-ink format. There is also a new nook out on June 10th, it looks smaller and lighter then both the kindle and the original nook. If I hadn't just got my nook and some neat accesorries I would probably get the new nook. Kindles don't yet have the ability to get e-pub books(the format used by libraries), but I think they will soon. At the time I bought my nook, being able to get librairy books was important to me(it is not important to everyone). With my nook I can do a bit more personalizing then you can on a kindle, but my guess is your DH won't care about changing the color of the back of his e-reader. Check out the various types in person, all the opinions online mean nothing until you go and "test drive" each device for yourself.

I got the newest Nook on Friday and LOVE IT! It is much lighter than the original Nook, Nook Color, and the Kindle (I really compared all three before pre-ordering the new one).

The newest Nook (Simple Touch Reader) has a touch screen, but don't worry about finger prints because there are none on mine. It is just a basic e-reader without a browser but has wi-fi.

The e-ink is fabulous for me because I stare at a computer all day and can get the worst headaches by reading from it after awhile, so I knew that I wouldn't go with the Nook Color.

Books on Amazon or Barnes & Noble are pretty similar in price. The Nook currently allows borrowing from the library and the Kindle is supposed to get this feature later this year.

Currently, books bought on Amazon cannot be read on other ereaders, because they are on a different format, but Nook books can be read on non-Nook (but not Amazon) readers.

Both my Kindle friends and Nook friends are really impressed with it and I can't put it down!

There is a deal for the Kindle this week I believe at Best Buy...I think you get back a $25 gift card or something like that.

I personally have a Kindle and love it. The touch screen didn't interest me and I wanted a dedicated ereader (I get distracted enough on my iphone :lmao:). The battery on mine lasts FOREVER (well over a month) which is great when travelling since I leave with a full charge and don't bother bringing the charger along.

I have a kindle and I love it. My favorite thing on vacation is to read by the pool or on the beach, so the kindle is great. I have a friend with the nook, black and white, and it also reads well on the beach, on the other hand our other friend with the nook color is not able to read by the pool or on the beach because on the glare and the screen, she is not happy.

I got the Nook Color a month or so ago, and I really love it! The color was the deciding factor for me. That, and the fact that you can subscribe to magazines...no more stacks of them to have to recycle!! I also like the fact that you can download apps now as well!

The new Nook is actually out now. Smaller at 6.5" x 5", thin and light, has wifi for downloading, and supposed to have great battery life - up to 2 days. IMO it's a nice price point of $139 and sounds like a true e-reader not tablet wanna be. Cnet review was outstanding on this one. I may finally break down and get it.... I've been holding off on buying an e-reader looking for better display in different light conditions, decent battery life. and lower price - this one seems to fit my criteria.

Agree with others that you want to understand how your husband will use a device and what he's really looking for. There are a lot of choices out there now and the line between e-reader and tablet are getting blurred more and more.

Good to hear! What do you think of it in different light conditions - is it ok to say read in bed with the lights off? How about in the sun?

I have a kindle and do not leave home without it! I love it - can't imagine there's a better e-reader out there than the kindle. I have the one that's Wifi & 3G and charge it about once a month :)

Well I guess this thread cleared things up: he will love the Nook. Or the Kindle. ;)

I bought the "old" Nook in November, got a great deal at Buy.com and I LOVE it. It's easy to read inside or outside, I can borrow books from the library or friends who have Nooks, or buy them online.

if your Dh is going to read magazines online, I'd get the color, if not, I love my Nook as it is!

I have had a nook with the 3g wifi for a few months and LOVE it- it has the e ink screen so you can read it anywhere with light, no problems reading outside, under lights... just get a book light for reading at night. The Nook also has the ability to lend to others, check out e books from the library, and you can read anything for free when in a Barnes and Noble. They also have many free, .99 cent books, and deals everyday- most books it seems are 12.99 (new release) and under most I get are around $5-$7.

For the Kindle, do you owners find you need a lighted cover or just a regular cover? Hard sided or is a pouch all that is needed?

I have the hard leather cover for my Kindle with the built-in light. If you are going to read in low light conditions, you really need a light. Anywhere you would need a light for a regular book, you'd need a light for the Kindle. The built-in light on the Kindle cover is just too handy. No need for extra batteries as it is powered by the Kindle itself. Very clever and useful.

I have the leather M-Edge executive cover and the light you can buy with it. It slides into the cover and then slides down into the spine when not in use. It is powered off an AAA battery. I like this cover because I can fold it back and hold the kindle one handed, or like a regular book. I was never a one handed reader with regular books, but that is how I prefer to read the kindle. It slides very easily into my purse and is well protected. I have no problems with it at all and I take my kindle everywhere. My mom has the exact same set up (mine is purple, hers is blue) and we both are very pleased.

No one has mentioned that Kindle has a keypad so that you can make notes in what you are reading like you might do in a "real" book. I'm pretty sure Nook does not have that feature. This is really an excellent tool if you're reading non-fiction books. Also with the Kindle you can highlight a section you are reading and post directly to your Facebook account if there is a quote or some information you want to share. My husband uses this feature all the time. Don't know if Nook has this capability.

I don't have a light yet, and it hasn't been an issue so far; when I read in bed at night I just have the light on. Probably would need one if reading in the car at night while driving.

Kindle either already can or will be introducing the "share with others" feature as well as the library option this year.

My husband did all the research and we decided Kindle had an edge over the Nook; we didn't see a need for the color and that is really the main advantage of the Nook as I see it.
