Help- Kindle, nook, etc?

Good to hear! What do you think of it in different light conditions - is it ok to say read in bed with the lights off? How about in the sun?

I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I haven't read it at night without lights yet, but outside it works great. Just like reading an actual book. I read it the same way that I would have read a paper book in any light conditions and don't have to accomodate the screen at all.

Best purchase in a long time (especially since I have been waiting and questioning which one to get for a LONG time!).

No one has mentioned that Kindle has a keypad so that you can make notes in what you are reading like you might do in a "real" book. I'm pretty sure Nook does not have that feature. This is really an excellent tool if you're reading non-fiction books. Also with the Kindle you can highlight a section you are reading and post directly to your Facebook account if there is a quote or some information you want to share. My husband uses this feature all the time. Don't know if Nook has this capability.

I don't have a light yet, and it hasn't been an issue so far; when I read in bed at night I just have the light on. Probably would need one if reading in the car at night while driving.

Kindle either already can or will be introducing the "share with others" feature as well as the library option this year.

My husband did all the research and we decided Kindle had an edge over the Nook; we didn't see a need for the color and that is really the main advantage of the Nook as I see it.

Both Nooks have the ability to type and make notes. :)

The Nook Color and the Nook are two different devices. One with color and an LCD screen and the other (well there are the first Gen. and a Sec. Gen now) just have e-ink like the Kindle.

Unfortunately, both new Nooks (color and touch) are wifi only. No more 3G. One of my favorite features of the Kindle is the Text-to-speech feature, which will essentially read the text of a book out loud for you with digitized speech. I don't think the voice is all that great, but it DOES turn the pages for you (at a speed you set). I turn on the text-to-speech, mute the volume, and use the treadmill, elliptical or exercycle while reading my Kindle with the pages turning automatically for me. This is probably my favorite feature after 3G!

I love my kindle. I do a lot of reading now just b/c of the convenience and how easy it is on my eyes. I didn't buy the light but it's next on my list. DH got me the ipad2 and I was reading on that last night...it killed my eyes and I'm thinking that's how it would feel with reading the nook. Everything was beautiful b/c of it being in color, but I had to switch to my kindle.

yes the Nook COLOr has a computer type screen but the other Nooks have the e- ink screen.

I also chose the Nook because I can go to barnes and Noble and get support/help there if anythng goes wrong.

The Nook Color was never an option for me (I must have eink)and my Original Nook was given away after less than a month, but I love, love, love my Kindle  However, the new Nook touch looks like it will be a much better device than their original ereader and will likely give Amazon a run for it's money.

If I were you I would take your husband to a store like Best Buy that sells them all and have him play around with them. Then you can buy the one he likes the most.

I played with the new Nook at B&N while waiting for my daughter to get out of the movies. It's light, small, sturdy. It has small raised strips on the side of the screen so you can turn pages without touching the screen, which I like. Unfortunately, it's a bit laggy and the screen doesn't refresh itself all the way. I turned it off completely twice to see if the memory just had to be cleared. Both times after navigating the menu to different pages I could see the ghost image of the previous page or pages. Pics below:

That would drive me nuts. Looks like B&N still isn't going to get me to switch over from my Kindle (not that is was all that likely in the first place).

I had heard The Nook touch only "flashes" after every 6th page and I wonder if that is what is causing the really bad ghosting. I would much rather deal with the refresh flash than ghosting.

This is true. I found it odd that one set of text kind of 'melted' and the next set appeared. It wasn't any faster than a Kindle page turn. I found it somewhat distracting because with a Kindle you get into a reading rhythm to the point where you don't really pay attention to the flash. With the Nook I spent my time during page turns wondering why it wouldn't and then WHAM it would. Not a real rhythm. It featured page numbers (at least in the sample book). Sure is a nifty little size. Lots of fonts to choose from. But again I think they loaded it down with software that makes it seem laggy, especially in comparison to the Kindle.

I have both the original nook (with 3g and wifi and it is an e-ink screen) and the nook color. I love them both! I have my Nook for reading books and I take it to BN with me all the time. We have the nook color because it's an android device and with a memory card, you can flash it to android and get the android market! I also like that the nook color lets you get magazines. I get at least 4 mags a week and I have now dwindled it down to 2 because I get 2 on the nook color! I do love that my original nook lets me borrow from the library. It saves me so much money and I don't even need to go there (so I save on gas too!).

I am suprised that no one mentioned one of the biggest ups for the original nook (ok well there are 2). You can take the battery out and replace it if need be (unlike the kindle which needs to be sent back to Amazon) and you can add extra memory with the use of a SD card. I also like that I can go to BN and get help with it. I had to do that within the first 6 months of owning my nook. It wouldn't turn on and we thought it was the battery. It turned out to be a faulty unit and I got a new one sent to me! I thought long and hard when I get my first Nook 2 years ago. I am glad I went with the Nook!

I don't know about anyone else but The removable battery and SD card never really mattered to me.

Usually by the time I need replace a battery in anything big like that it is cheaper to buy a new item than it is to buy a new battery for it. Besides there are a lot of people who still own the original Kindle from four years ago and their battery is still going strong.

As for the SD card, I highly doubt I'm going to come close to filling up my Kindle anytime soon. My Kindle holds 1500 books and my daughter's holds 3500 books. If for some reason we do reach our limit all we have to do is archive the books we have already read (which I do anyways).

I agree. So happy I went with a Kindle. I've had 2 friends that had to get a replacement Nook because of small cracks along the sides. I love the long battery life of my Kindle too.

For the most part the removable battery in the eInk readers is a total non-issue. Those batteries are designed to far outlast the life of the device anyway. I have a Kindle 2 that is several years old and it still holds a charge for well over a week. If something goes wrong that would cause the battery to need replacing, then it is a device malfunction anyway that needs to be addressed under warranty.

Amazon discontinued the removable battery from version 1 to 2 because they found that the weakness integrity of the housing was leading to equipment malfunction - ie dust and grime sneaking in through the cracks. I haven't heard officially that Barnes and Noble found the same thing, but they did also discontinue the removable battery in their 2nd version.

The sd card slots are nice for people who have files that tend to be larger in size - such as PDF textbooks or other things that are graphic intensive. Regular text only novels are tiny, tiny file sizes and all of the modern devices can hold thousands of books in internal storage.

I have the newest Kindle with 3G + wireless and I love it. I mostly buy the .99 or free ebooks. Right now they are having a sale called Sunshine deals where they have 600+ books for under 2.99 (besides the regular cheapies) and I have been stocking up.
I have to give a rave for Amazon's customer service, too. I have the leather lighted cover and my DS4 broke one of the connectors. I called Amazon and had a free replacement at my door in less than 24 hours AND got free shipping.

I have read that some people are having issues with their Kindle 3 in graphite getting hairline cracks at one corner of where the screen is. There doesn't seem to be that issue with the white one though.

I do use the sd slot on my Nook. I have music loaded on mine. The Nook comes with a music player and you can plug in headphones. The Nook doesn't have the best speakers but it works great with the headphones plugged in.
