I live 90 minutes from Disney. I have done it both ways...
Staying off-site works fine if -
-you get up early (short lines)
-or go durring slow months (Sept or Jan/Feb)
-or if you just want a taste of Disney. Go to the Cape and see NASA, Go to Universal, Sea World, Beach day, Gator World.... But that's a different kind of vacation.
Staying on-site works if-
- you are an early-bird with kids, and husband wants to sleep in, swim in the morning while you wait in line with kids for kiddie-rides and then meet for lunch. He could play golf or go fishing...then meet for lunch in the park.
- you and kids want to swim in the middle of the day...or nap
- you want to see all of the 9,000 things that Disney has to offer
I stay on-site because I can park my car and toss away my keys, and forget about driving. Also with the meal plan, I toss away my wallet and don't worry about money either.
