Problem???you bet. Her hair is past her butt and there is no way she can do a good job of brushing it.

I am going to DIScon and DH has no idea how to even begin this daily chore.

So, I went out and bought some headbands and scrunchies and have been teaching DD how to do her own hair. She has the scrunchie part down pat, but it kinda looks like a rats nest from the back.

I have an appointment with the teacher Tuesday and I am going to warn her that DD may be coming in with some less than perfect hairdos.

How do you teach a child to brush hair that long?

My five year old insists on brushing her own as well, and its only up to her shoulders.. hers is naturally wavy, so its a little better

I feel your pain! DD was just 5 when I was away from home (DS was in the hospital) and her hair was like a brillo pad. DH did the best he could. We have an ornament on our Christmas tree from that year with a picture taken of her in school....and everytime I look at it I laugh.

Sounds like your daughter is on the right track. Just have DH smooth out the back after she's done her thing.

Amid,
After she puts it in the scrunchie have her bring it around to the front of her body and brush it out in front of her. Otherwise, I think she'll be unable to brush it. I bet I couldn't either. ;)
Oh, & be GLAD she wants to brush. Some girls couldn't care less.

Have fun in WDW!

Try having her seperated it down the middle (as best she can) so half is on each side and bring it around her shoulders to the front. That way there isn't so much to get through on either side and she gets most of the way back that way too.

DD's hair was only to her waist when she was 5, but she was able to do a halfway decent job of it...as long as the pony tail was low (on her nape) & not up higher.

We had her divide the hair in the middle down the back - just using her hands. No, it wasn't straight - just reasonable. Then we had her start brushing about 6" at the bottom on one side. Once that was knot-free, she moved up another 6" repeating until that side was done. I usually had her put a scrunchie in to keep it from getting caught up with the other side. After the 2nd side was done the same way, she just took the scrunchie off & grabbed all of the hair & put it in. There was often a "line" down the back that wasn't too straight, but it was better than the rat's nest we used to get.

Or you could just do what DD did in 1st grade - she took an egg full of Silly Putty to bed with her (sneaking it out to her room after being told to put it away in the kitchen). She held it in her hand, up near her cheek when she went to sleep evidently. She woke up with SP in her hair, on her pillow, her sheets, her PJs.... We ended up cutting some of it off - or we'd still be cleaning it out. (She's 11 now! ) The best part was trying to explain to the secretary at school why she was late! :p  :)
