I need some input from you all because you are honest ;) and pro's. Last year we sailed on the 4 day Wonder with my parents and sisters and had a great time.

This year we are sailing with my parents again, my sister and her partner and myself, my 2 and 5 year old sons and my MIL. My DH can not go bc of a deployment :( but his MIL is a great substitute and she has never cruised :p so why not give her the best there is DCL.

My parents and I are booked in 2 Category 9 connecting cabins and my sister and her partner and in a category 11. We are going on the 7 day Western...............

My DM is a young 58 but suffered a devastating stroke 2 years ago at the young age of 56 and is very impaired. She uses a cane and wheelchair/scooter. I started thinking after this wonderful story about the Pagefamily that my DM would LOVE a balcony to escape to. She easily becomes tired and it is hard for her to get around. She can enjoy the ports but I was thinking that in port she can sit on her balcony and enjoy coffee or a cold drink and have privacy with a beautiful view.

I spoke with my Dad about it and said my DM had watched the Travel Channel and said the balcony made her dizzy and looked windy. Well she never has had a balcony and if she used it for the port days when she went back to the ship early I thought it would be great.

I really think she would love it and would be touched if we did it for her. I checked with DU and I pay to upgrade my sister into the connecting category 9 cabin to me, my MIL and sons and move my parents to a Category 6 Obstructed view either cabin 7120 or 6134. It would cost me about $1000 to make it happen for my sister and my parents but after her stroke who knows when we can be together again like this.

What do you all think? I don't want to force it on her but really think she would like it on port days etc.

Does anyone know how many people either of these cabins sleep or how bad the obstructed view is or if there is plexiglass of metal. Remember she will be sitting in a wheelchair or a chair because of her disabilities.

Any thoughts from you pro's would be awesome!

Thanks!
Tiff

Thanks that is very helpful and I will show my Dad. I just don't know if she would like it................but thank you I would LOVE it but I have to put her feelings first :)

Just my thoughts - I have learned that everyone's reality is different -
I am not good with heights but had NO trouble with the veranda dizziness or wind
now I will admit we had perfect weather (July) but the breeze was pleasant (messed your hair but WHO cares) - not gale force and since cruising was mainly at night not an issue during the day

Sometimes it is hard to make a call about $ before you get there - one man's amount is nothing and another man's amount is huge - for me the difference was $400 and I thought it was worth every penny but what I paid doesn't matter

Good luck and I hope you enjoy the cruise
PS IMHO I think the obstructed verandas are perfect for someone in a wheelchair since the obstruction is at ceiling level....could be much less cost and an easier decision

You are wondeful for considering this. Would it hurt to go ahead and get the verandah and it would be there if the opportunity to use it came about. You could always just open the doors for some fresh air and to listen to the sounds of the ocean if nothing else. I hope you have a great trip.

Hi Tiff, got your pm and since you told me to be honest here goes. :)
I would go ahead and buy your mom the upgrade, since you told me that it would not burden your family too much financially and since your mom is being so kind letting you and the boys live with her while your new house is being built I think it would be a nice thank you for all she has done.
Although she has concerns about feeling dizzy on the veranda she has never been on one so she does not know if it would bother her, worse comes to worse she could just open it for some fresh air but not go outside. I really think she would be fine. BUT you may want to consider a navigators veranda which is more enclosed which could alleviate any veritgo feelings she might have.
Have a great trip! Ann

I agree with Ann, except, if your mom is in a wheelchair she won't be able to see out if you are in a regular cat. 7. I think I would choose 7120 because the obstruction is along the top and that combined with the plexiglass will shelter a lot of the wind but still give her a great view! Go for it, get that wonderful person the verandah she should have!

I have not been on a cruise, but from what I have read about wheelchair access on the port stops, Castaway Cay is very accessible, but some of them are not really wheelchair friendly. So having a nice veranda to enjoy during the other port trips might make her trip a lot more enjoyable.

Thank you all for taking time to reply :) I am going ot discuss with my DS this afternoon and once again thank you for the great information and advice!

Hi Tiff,

If you book cabin 6134, we'll be neighbors! We're in 6130. We just love our verandahs, and usually insist on one when we cruise. When we're in port, we love to hang out there and people-watch. I don't remember it being too windy when the ship isn't moving.

I think it's really sweet what you're considering.

Looking in the brochure I have, it looks like 6134 would be less obstructed than 7120. There's a picture of the rear of the ship on page 4. Of course, it's the starboard side, but the port side should look identical.

Tina :)

Thanks Tina, my DS is for it too but now I think I should consult my Mom and not spring it on her without her opinion since she was concerned. Can't wait until October :)
