Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

Thanks Jill. We actually planned the whole two week trip around that one particular day next June. :rotfl2: We will be visiting San Francisco, Yosemite, Anaheim, and Grand Canyon. We have the Yosemite and Grand Canyon rooms booked already, based on our plan to visit Walt's Barn. Haha

:rotfl2:

Stranger planning has taken place on these boards. :)

Haha. That's great. In addition to Walt's Barn, we plan to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, and I'm really hoping we can work in a visit to John Lasseter's winery in Sonoma. (Lasseter is also a train buff. He has Ollie Johnston's old train at his house next to the winery. How cool is that!) http://www.lasseterfamilywinery.com/story.html

Nice! When I was planning my DL trip in March I thought about starting in SF to go to the Disney Family Museum and then driving south to LA but decided just to concentrate on DLR this time. I need to get to SF soon.

I'm a big fan of spaceship earth as well and for your same reasons ... Interesting ride, can relax for 10 min or power nap whatever fits the bill that particular day. Oh yeah I totally remember when my oldest could go out with cousins or friends in Disneyland, but nobody had cell phones at the time only pagers ( weird thinking of no iPhone ) but we set up meet times at certain places. Seems like forever ago but I still remember, wait it was forever ago she's 36 yrs old now and has twin boys who are 14 yrs old & twin girls almost 13 yrs old lol

man the kids do grow so fast - I think that is one reason I am trying to cram as many trips to WDW in while my daughter is still super into princesses and stuff since I know it won't last forever ... but I guess they get into new things and have new experiences with them

love Spaceship Earth - definitely a must ride every trip... though not sure if the rest of the family likes it as much

We always get the Kakigori too. I'm the same way. I always think to myself "Why do we always get Kakigori? We should try something else". But it's just too good to pass up, especially on a hot day!

My DD is 10 and is really into Minecraft right now. She is still sort of into Pokemon but definitely not as much as she used to be.

Stand by for a quick one post detour, we visited Marceline, MO yesterday...

Some of you may be familiar with Marceline, MO, but if not.... Walt was born in Chicago, but his family decided that it would be safer/healthier to move away from the big city when he was little. They decided to move to Marceline, MO. I don't recall the exact ages, but they lived there for 5 years while Walt was elementary school aged. Although he only spent 5 years there, the story goes that Marceline had the biggest impact on his early life and he always cherished the memories that he made there. Walt returned several times as an adult, and even had plans for a "Marceline Project" before he passed away. His passion for trains was born here and he developed his love for animals on the family farm.

Apparently, he wasn't old enough to do real farm chores, so he was often tasked with watching his little sister when the others worked. Story goes, that he also started his love for drawing, animation, and storytelling here as he drew flip book style pictures for his sister as they practiced "belly botany" under his "dreaming tree" (a giant cottonwood situated next to a spring.) Also, the Main Street in downtown Marceline served as inspiration for Main Street in Disneyland.

Walt returned several times as an adult for various events and activities, and even purchased his boyhood home with the plans to develop it into sort of a working farm exhibit/park. (Unfortunately, it was still just an idea when he passed. His brother Roy came out of retirement to complete Walt Disney World, but didn't have it in him to see the Marceline project completed, so he sold the land to the current family who owns it today.) Some really interesting stuff here.

So Marceline, is in the middle of Missouri, about 3 hours NW of St. Louis (and probably about the same distance NE of Kansas City.) Not too far for a day trip.

This was our second visit. I wrote up a more detailed TR of our last visit in 2012. Check my signature for the link.

Anyway, this isn't meant to be thorough TR, but hoping to share a few highlights and maybe inspire a few to visit the lovely town.

We actually started the day at the General John J. Pershing Boyhood Home State Historic Site http://mostateparks.com/park/gen-john-j-pershing-boyhood-home-state-historic-site It's located in Laclede, MO - about 20 minutes west of Marceline. I admit that I should have paid more attention in history class, because while Pershing was one of the nations most legendary generals, I really didn't know too much about him. Unlike Marceline, I'm not sure that this would be worth a day trip to visit (unless you are a serious military/history fan), but if you are already in the area, it was actually pretty cool.

So we visited the Pershing house and museum and then arrived in Marceline around 11 am. We wanted to visit the Walt Disney United States Post Office Building before it closed at noon, so we drove there first. The postal service issued a commemorative stamp there in 1968, which was a pretty big deal as Marceline one out over other Disney related towns such as Chicago, Kansas City, and LA. Apparently, there were cases to be made for each town but it couldn't be agreed upon, so they asked Walt's wife, Lilly, what she thought Walt would have preferred. She didn't hesitate to say Marceline because he always spoke so fondly of it. And later the building was renamed in his honor and is the only federal building to be named after Walt. Pretty cool... They have a special cancellation stamp, so we stopped in for a few cheap souvenirs. It's like 60 cents for a pre-stamped envelope that they'll cancel for you.

Pretty cool! And we had fun chatting with the postal worker behind the counter. I find myself wanting to share more than just the highlights here. Maybe I'll have to make a separate TR for the day.... after I finish this WDW one :hippie:

Next we ate lunch at a Sonic. Not a lot of dining choices as it's a small town. And then we headed over to the farm that Walt lived at. The home is private (owned by the people who run the museum in town), but they have Walt's "Dreaming Tree" and a replica of his barn available to the public. So cool!

The house as it looks today.

And the dreaming tree.

Or at least what's left of it. It's been hit by lightning a few times in the last couple of decades and is pretty much dead and beyond saving. The cool thing is that Walt's grandson planted "the son of the dreaming tree" a while back (with soil from the Magic Kingdom and water from the Rivers of America) from a sapling that came from the original.

Walt visited the tree several times as an adult explaining that a lot of his daydreams and inspiration came from here.

The other cool thing on the site is the recreation of Walt's "Happy Place".

Without going into too much detail, Walt spent a lot of time in the family's barn. Playing with the animals, and even having a "barn circus" where he charged local kids a dime to come inside and see it. His first taste of showbiz, and apparently a valuable lesson learned not to disappoint his guests (which he did), and instead to exceed expectations.

The barn is a replica of the one that originally stood there. It has a longer story than I can share here, but in a nutshell... It was an inspiration for the barn in the movie, "So Dear to My Heart", and then became the basis for the barn that he had built at his home in LA. That barn was used to support his small scale train (Carolwood Pacific RR) and is known as Walt's Happy Place where he would go tinker and work on his train projects. It's accredited as the birthplace of imagineering. The barn was relocated to Griffith Park (not terribly far from the Hollywood sign) and can be visited today. Anyway, about 15 years ago or so, they recreated the original barn back at the boyhood home.

The secret bonus feature, is that there is nothing inside. Except for hundreds (if not thousands) of signatures. You are welcome to sign your name and/or leave a note to Walt. Seems like nearly every square inch is covered, but it's not too hard to find a fun place to leave your own signature :)

After exploring the barn and tree, and the lovely gardens and grounds, we decided to head towards the Walt Disney Elementary school.

Walt actually attended the dedication of the new school in 1960, and had special artwork commissioned from the Disney Studios to go inside. Additionally, he gave them a flag pole from the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley (he was the Chairman of Pageantry.)

He also gave them a flag from Disneyland to fly. It's currently on display in the museum.

Notice the school desk in the case below the flag. I'll come back to that in a bit.

So, after the school, we headed over to the Disney Complex (park). It houses a playground, swimming pool, amphitheater, etc and is a mile or two outside of town. In 1956 Walt, Roy, and their wives came back to dedicate the pool. But the more interesting thing here is the site of the Midget Autopia 2.0 ride. A whole article could be written about this, but in a nutshell.... The Midget Autopia was originally included in Disneyland, but Walt was unhappy with it because parents and children couldn't ride it together. So he had it removed. Before he passed away, he decided to send the cars to Marceline and have his Imagineers help build the track. (Unfortunately, he was too ill from his cancer and couldn't attend the dedication when it opened.) It operated for several years until it fell into disrepair. They have plans and hope to eventually re-open Midget Autopia 3.0 in the future, next to the museum. In the meantime, the old site was turned into a playground and you can play on the old tracks. Pickle brought her Big Wheels and took a few laps.

They have one of the original cars on display inside the museum. Apparently it was never used on the track itself.

After that, we decided to head back into town. I didn't grab any photos of Main Street, as it was hot and getting late. Kids wanted the air conditioning of the museum, and we had about 2 hours left before the museum closed. It has a lot of old fashioned main street charm as you can imagine. Also, it has the "Uptown Theater". Walt Disney held the midwest premiere of The Great Locomotive Chase (starring Fess Parker) here in 1956. Walt, Roy, and wives, came to host the premier and had a lot of interaction with the local children.

So finally, we arrived at the Walt Disney Hometown Museum.

http://www.waltdisneymuseum.org/

This could be a long write up in itself. You'll have to go to the website above, or even better, visit yourself to get a better understanding of it. In another nutshell, it's located in the old train depot and opened about 15 years ago. It has beautiful gardens and a train exhibit too.

A few notes...

The museum was started by Kaye Malins, who had the opportunity to meet Walt several times as a child. She even got to go to Disneyland with Walt himself!!!! When he came back in 1956 for the pool dedication, Kaye's family had the only house in town with air conditioning, so the town folk agreed that Walt should stay at her house. Unless I misunderstood, he actually slept in her pink bed room. How cool is that! Kaye's father, Rush, purchased the Disney farm on Walt's behalf (to get it cheaper) and then sold it directly to Walt. As mentioned, they had a Marceline project planned. After Walt passed, Roy eventually offered to sell it back to Rush. And it's been in their family ever since. Kaye and her mother, Inez, both volunteer at the museum and give tours. I'm telling you... These ladies are amazing. So friendly. So many stories from their interactions with Walt and Roy. Truly amazing. If you can, you should get yourself out there and meet them before it's too late (Inez is 84) :thumbsup2

The other note, is that many of the artifacts came from Walt's sister Ruth. Before she passed away, she decided that she wanted to donate it to Marceline in hopes of helping to make the museum. Inez said that Kaye flew up to Portland with an empty suit case - thinking she'd get a few old letters and documents. But she had to come back with a U-Haul because there was so much stuff!

Without going into too much detail, the museum covers a lot of history and artifacts from Walt and his family's direct interaction with Marceline. In addition other items included cover Marceline train history, artifacts from the Great Locomotive Chase, an amazing Disneyland diorama, Midget Autopia, and all kinds of misc. stuff related to the town and Disney in general. Really a treat for $5 an adult and $2.50 a child. They have a cool gift shop too :-)

A few more photos and then we'll finish up...

Remember that photo with the flag and desk? In one of Walt's visits, he went back and visited his old elementary school. He told them that he wanted to find his desk. They said it would be too hard because there were hundreds of them. He said something along the lines of him not worrying about that... Because he had etched his initials in it.

Pretty cool!

Had to stop by the Mickey statue! Designed by Ollie Johnston, before he passed away. (Ollie was one of Walt's Nine Old Men and a huge train buff. If you haven't seen the Frank & Ollie movie, do yourself a huge favor and see it ASAP. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113104/ ) A series of these were made in 2003 to celebrate Mickey's 75th anniversary.

I took a ton of photos of the artifacts and memorabilia, but this post is already too long. So only a couple more highlights.

Upstairs is a giant hand made Disneyland diorama made by the late Dale Varner. Pretty cool!

Also upstairs, is a train viewing area. Although trains no longer stop in town, about 70 of them pass through every day. Seems like that's every 5 minutes or so. :drive:

Looking out the window...

We stayed until the museum closed and had a wonderful time visiting with Kaye and Inez. Truly awesome ladies!

Marceline is a great place to visit. Nice small town atmosphere. Everyone we came across was super friendly. If you are a big Walt Disney fan, I strongly encourage you to make a pilgrimage to Walt's Happy Place :thumbsup2

Just showed this to Dh told him we need to go if we make it to St Louis next summer.

Wow! Twin boys and twin girls, that's pretty cool. I bet they love their Disney Meema :thumbsup2

They do indeed grow up so fast. I can't believe our baby just turned 7. Kids sure are a blessing. It's exciting to think that baby Emma will be here in just a few more days. Looking forward to some cute baby photos on your PTR :hippie:

We always get the Kakigori too. I'm the same way. I always think to myself "Why do we always get Kakigori? We should try something else". But it's just too good to pass up, especially on a hot day!

My DD is 10 and is really into Minecraft right now. She is still sort of into Pokemon but definitely not as much as she used to be.

Kakigori lovers unite! :rotfl2:

Princess and Buddy are both into Minecraft too. We got in on it fairly early about 3 years ago when it was still in beta. I'm guessing both of them have played it at least once a week since then. And many stretches where they play it every day. It's fun to see what new lands they come up with from time to time. popcorn::

Just showed this to Dh told him we need to go if we make it to St Louis next summer.

That's great. I hope it works out for you guys.

Noticed that you are from Virginia Beach. I lived in Richmond a couple years as a teenager and we'd visit VA Beach several times a summer. And my mom would take me to the skatepark at Mt. Trashmore in the cooler season. I remember that all the kids at school would wear 17th St. Surf Shop t-shirts (when they had all the cartoon ones.) Great memories!!!

Day 6 - Sunday the 8th - Part 4 - Back to the Grand Floridian and DTD

After Spaceship Earth, we headed straight to the monorail and got on without any trouble.

If you recall from Stephanie's updates, Princess lost her pink magic band the day before, so we decided to stop in the lost and found at the TTC to see if they had it. Unfortunately, they didn't. They took our information in case it turned up, but we never heard from them again.

They had a nice seating area where the kids and I waited while Stephanie waited in line.... and I thought to myself.... I wonder how many times people forget stuff while they are waiting their turn. "Umm, I lost my hat at the lost and found?" :lmao:

Oh well, let's go hop on the resort monorail. Cue the Price is Right losing horn again, because the monorail was down once more. Are you kidding me?!?!?

They suggested that it would be down for a while and that we'd be best off if we took the boat over to Magic Kingdom and then hopped on the resort boat back to the Grand Floridian. After our headache with monorail alternatives in the morning, we weren't too excited about that.... We decided to just walk instead. It may not be any faster, but at least we were in control. And we hadn't visited the Poly in a while, so we thought it would be fun to see the construction up close.

We went inside the Great Ceremonial house for a quick AC break. The entire center of the lobby was walled off on both floors. So instead of a beautiful lobby with that awesome fountain open to the second floor, it looked like you were heading to the bathroom in some random shopping mall. I'm so glad that my mom decided to have us stay at the Grand Floridian when she found out that the Poly was under construction. I wish I had taken a couple photos. Oh well.

The Poly is still cool. I can't wait to come back when it's all finished!

The walk turned out to be a bit longer than I would have liked and I was getting hot and tired. The wrist was throbbing again. Oh well, at least I wasn't waiting in line right now!!

I think the walk took about 20 minutes, not too bad. Probably still quicker than taking the boats.

We got back to the room around 4:45pm. I'm not sure what we did for the next hour and a half or so as there are no photos. :rotfl2: We either relaxed in the room or swam. We weren't sure what to do for dinner, but we had wanted to shop at Downtown Disney at least once during this trip, so we decided to head that way for dinner.

For those of you who followed our PTR, you'll recall that we made a big purchase of Adventureland kitchenware from the Disney Store website a couple weeks before the trip. There were items that we knew existed, but weren't available online, so we wanted to see if they had them at the Centerpiece area inside the new Marketplace Co-Op store.

We've been in our house for 10 years now, and never got around to fully decorating the dining room, so we decided now was as good as a time as any. Let's go down and see if they have the glasses and napkins, and anything else....

We traded Princess for Cassie. I don't remember exactly, but I think Princess, the boys, and Randy went to the Magic Kingdom. My parents and Denise's gang stayed back at the resort to relax. And then we hopped on the bus. No need to press our luck with the monorail this time!

Transportation was quick and convenient this time! The kids stopped for a photo op.

Where to eat?!?! It's either Wolfgang Puck Express or Earl of Sandwich. Whenever we are on the dining plan, we always eat at Wolfgang Puck. We really think it's one of the best values for QS credits. The pizza is delicious :lovestruc

Stephanie and I were both 50/50 on the choice, so we let Cassie make the final call and she went with Wolfgang. No complaints here!

We ordered our food and then grabbed a table up front in the kitchen area.

I love this next photo. It's my Facebook profile photo right now.

It was fun sitting up front and being able to watch them cook.

A little while later, our pizza's arrived. We decided to share 3 pizzas between the 5 of us. It turned out to be perfect!

Buddy and Pickle shared a cheese pizza.

And then Steph, Cassie, and I shared a margherita pizza and good old sausage, mushroom, and pepperoni.

Just perfect.

Once we finished up, Buddy and I waited outside while the girls used the rest room.

And then off to the new Marketplace Co-Op!

And straight to the Centerpiece!

So cool! Like kids in a candy store. I could easily spend more than I should in this place. And we actually did. Oops! I don't regret it though. Haha :cool1:

I really wanted to get all the Orange Bird stuff, but at least Stephanie was thinking clearly. Stick to the the Adventureland/Tiki theme Matt!

Day 6 - Sunday the 8th - Part 5 - DTD

So what did we buy?

Six of the Adventureland glasses

Two tiki statues designed by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily for the 50th anniversary of the Enchanted Tiki Room. (If you aren't familiar with Kevin and Jody, Google them. These guys are about as cool as they come!!)

These killer Aloha plates.

And a couple more wooden plates (we had already purchased a couple of these online.)

And three of each of the napkins.

Wow, that was quite the haul!!! They offered to have it delivered to the resort and we didn't hesitate. Who wants to cary a ginormous bag of breakables the rest of the night?!?!

So we ended up spending a LONG time shopping in there. Great store!!! Kudos to Cassie for offering to take Buddy and Pickle to the Lego store while we finished up. When we finally made it over there, it was beyond crowded. You could hardly move inside the store. We decided to forget it, and just move on. We stopped at the Art gallery on the way out to eye a couple things. And Cassie picked up a Maleficent rice krispy treat from Goofy's. She seemed to enjoy it :cool1:

OK. Enough shenanigans... It's getting late. Let's head back.

Pickle passed out on the bus ride home.

We got back to the room around 9:30pm and pretty much headed straight to bed. We had an early appointment at Bibbity Bobbity Boutique and lots of birthday activities planned.

Good night moon!

.

The monorail was down again?! How annoying!

Good choice going with Wolfgang Puck for dinner. We love that pizza and most other things we've had there. Earl of Sandwich is good too, but so cheap that it's not a good value on the dining plan.

Those dishes are really cool. I could have spent a lot of time in that store, also!

Yikes that monorail was really a pain at least for this particular day ... I hope it was better the rest of your trip. Wolfgang Puck express was a great choice for all of you and love their delicious pizza yum! But the best part of your evening for me was seeing the marketplace co op store and the cool dishes you bought (( love them )) I can't wait to go inside this store and almost more excited about it than our 14 days staying at CL lol ( Yeah I love to shop it's my thing )

Looking forward to your pickles big birthday at BBB and MK

I can totally vouch for that Maleficent Rice Crispie Treat being good! Those pizzas look great! I have eaten at a Wolfgang Puck Express but not the one at DTD, so we will have to make plans to do that sometime! :thumbsup2 We didn't get a chance to go to the Marketplace Co-Op when we were there in June, so I am really hoping that we can go next week/weekend!! There is so much to see in there, we definitely want to stop in!!

Great updates. Kids definitely grow up too fast! We didn't get to spend much time in the Japan pavillion last trip and it looks really cool. We definitely need to check it out more next time.

Gosh the monorail was down again? Hopefully they get that fixed during your trip.

I love all of the merch you bought. I bet your dining room looks really cool with all of that in it.

We loved the centerpiece section of that store. I want a set of all the different plates and stuff. Such neat stuff for us Disney addicts!

good thing you paid all that extra money to stay at a monorail resort ... *le sigh*

The Marketplace Co-Op store looks really cool, but totally NSFW - Not Safe For Wallet

That is a great picture of you and Pickles!

Those pizzas look great!

I LOVE the Adventureland Kitchen Line. Also, the attraction themed drinking glasses are very cool too!

I agree! Wolfgand Puck is one of the best values for QS credits. But... Earl of Sandwich is quite good too! You can't go wrong with either :goodvibes

We aren't huge shoppers, but we are suckers for all things Disney. We probably shop more on vacation than we do most of the rest of the year. :rotfl2:

I saw the photo of the rice crispy on your TR. I didn't try one, but I wish I had. You should definitely stop in the co-op next week. The Centerpiece (kitchen store) is awesome, but they have lot of other cool shops too. Especially if you are a lady. (I can appreciate Vera Bradley purses and stuff, but of course, it's not the same for a guy. :rotfl2:)

Great updates. Kids definitely grow up too fast! We didn't get to spend much time in the Japan pavillion last trip and it looks really cool. We definitely need to check it out more next time.

Right now the dining room is a mess with piles of stuff in it. Hopefully, we'll get the pictures framed and everything arranged soon. Hahaha.

Yes, and addict isn't too far from the truth :rolleyes1

Definitely NSFW Hahhah :crazy2:

Yeah, those glasses are cool. If I was made of money, we would have got a few of each. pirate:

What a great shopping trip! You made quite a haul with all that adventureland / aloha shopping! Also, those pizzas look AHmazing; I need to make it to WPE on our next trip!

I actually was unaware you could walk from TTC to GF! I once walked from TTC to the Poly only, and got so lost, already in excruciating pain from my legs being so sore that I never want to make that walk ever again, no matter what.

Day 7 - Monday the 9th - Part 1 - Happy Birthday Pickle!

So today's the big day! Our baby turned 7. Buddy and Princess have both celebrated their actual birthdays at WDW two times each, but this was going to be a first for Pickle. We all had been looking forward to this day for a long time, especially her. She had been talking bout it for weeks!

We had lots planned, starting with Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique at around 8am. So we woke up early to get the party started!

Good morning, and Happy Birthday Pickle!!!!

She perked right up and we didn't waste any time getting to the presents!

Princess and Buddy got her some bracelets, fairy wings, and nail polish. She was pretty excited about the nail polish!

And then from us, she got an Elsa dress and tiara, and a Cinderalla dress.

We knew that we'd be taking her to Bibbity Bobbity Boutique and then eating breakfast at Cindy's Castle... and that she'd want to wear a princess dress on for the day. Cinderella has always been her favorite princess and she had outgrown her last Cinderella dress, so we picked one up from Disney store earlier in the spring when it was on sale. But a few weeks before her birthday, she said that she wanted an Elsa dress for her birthday present. (Those who followed the pre-trip report will remember our little adventure to get that darn Elsa dress.) Oh well, we are already spoiling her on her birthday anyway, why not just give her two dresses?

Once she opened her presents and everyone got dressed, we were ready to go! Mimi and Papa were waiting outside the door with a special surprise...

A banner and birthday pillow. My mom gave Princess a birthday pillow when she turned 6 or 7 at WDW too, and the princesses signed it at our breakfast in Norway. Cool!!! (Have I mentioned how awesome my mom is yet?!?!?)

We hopped on the monorail and made it to the Magic Kingdom without any issues this morning. Happy to see that everything was running smoothly this time!!!

We arrived around 7:45am and it was fun to see the park relatively empty! It’s worth it to schedule a tour, breakfast, Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique, etc. early, just to get inside before the park officially opens :)

Had to stop for a few photos with Roy and Minnie…

And a few photos in front of Cinderella’s Castle!!

It’s worth noting that Buddy and my dad weren’t interested in coming early for Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique. We had plans for breakfast at Cindy’s closer to 9am, so they stayed back at the resort with the rest of the overall party and would meet us later.

And the birthday girl!

Hello Cinderella, we’re here

I have to say, that I wasn’t terribly excited about Bibbidy Bobbidy Boutique. I was concerned that my little sweetheart was going to come out looking like a Bratz doll, a little diva, and/or Honey Boo Boo. But she was really excited about it, so how could I say no?!?!? Oh well, who cares as long as she has fun.

The inside of the boutique was pretty darn cool and the theming was amazing. Maybe this won’t be so bad after all!

They took her to her chair.

And showed here the options for her hair. I was relieved when she picked the “Princess Bun” (or whatever it’s called) as it was the lest Honey Boo Boo’ish option available.

Her stylist’s name was Margarita. She was quiet but very sweet. She got straight to it!

They had a seating area opposite of the chairs where we could watch.

They had various tiaras on display above the seating area.

Different ladies came by to work on her nails, lips, and eyes while Margarita worked on her hair.
