Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho. It's off to the Grand Floridian We Go! June 2014 (Update: Video)

My last three trips I went back to the Animation Academy to try and get in a drawing class and I can NOT find it where you go in! I found the characters (Wreck it Ralph, Sorcerer Mickey) but not the class. Too embarrassed to ask, too, so I ended up not doing it. I'd really like to do it this trip, so my Mom can try it too! Maybe I'll finally ask.

Love your bonus family's photo! Haha!

Stephanie's drawing looks PERFECT! Pickle definitely did a good job with getting the ideas down; you can see that she was following along, but I hate to be rushed too!

Wow, that crowd is crazy!

Love the light sabers!

Too funny that the other family ended up in your photopass pictures!

I'm sure the animation class is a little hard for the young ones. Stephanie's drawing looks great, and that's awesome she was able to guess the right answers and get the animators drawing. :)

I can't believe how much I missed while I was gone! I am all caught up again though!!

We sampled a few cupcakes on this trip and man...some of them were just fantastic! We had lunch at Be Our Guest on one of the days and I totally should have tried that cupcake you had! I opted for the Potato Leek Soup as an appetizer and it is definitely one of our favorite things there!!

So glad Pickle had a great birthday! It looked so much fun! I am excited for my birthday there, even though I am going to be turning 30, I will still feel like I am 7 again, I bet! :rotfl2:

We are not too big on any of the QS places at Hollywood either, if we are there Pizza Planet is definitely our go to! Can't wait to read more!! It really looks like you guys had an amazing trip so far! :goodvibes

The animation academy is really fun - Olivia got frustrated too (though mostly because her choice for characters - Daisy Duck - didn't get picked)

Gotta love the random MGM streetmosphere players - even if they are borderline annoying :rotfl:

Just back from Disneyland and California ((( fun )) and just caught up on all your fun!
Pickles BBB pictures came out beautiful, and I love her special meeting with the fairy god mother. Breakfast looked fabulous at CRT and of course with all the princesses it's always a favorite ... It's the castle so amazing! Love the princess meet and greet photos so adorable and to top the birthday night off with BOG dinner made it a totally perfect princess pickle birthday : )
Hollywood Studios had quite the crowd that morning but happy you all were able to get in and ride several rides very quickly. Two of our favorites are TSM and rockin roller coaster at DHS and I love the photo of princess looking happy on rockin roller coaster and the 2 older boys with eyes closed and screaming ( you go princess! )
We brought light weight umbrella strollers to disney world until the kids were 8 ... I agree worked well for drinks, snacks, purses, souvenirs and of course tired little kiddos : )

It looks like you are all having a grand time! ;) I can't wait for part two of DHS! (I'm trying to decide where to eat dinner that night and if we should take the kiddos to Fantasmia.) I'm glad Pizza Planet was OK--my son is a huge Toy Story fan so it is a requirement. LOL

Unfortunately, that was the end of DHS for us. It was raining the rest of the day, so we decided not to come back that night. But... If you haven't seen Fantasmic before, you should. It's awesome!

Thanks! When you go into the main building that has Wreck it Ralph and stuff, the Animation area is in a room off to the right of the characters. There is a little waiting area with some seating and stuff. It's worth asking if you can't find it. Everyone should do one of these at least once!

Yeah, I cracked up when I saw that random family posing. I had to share it.

That's awesome! Stay tuned for more cupcakes in the next batch up updates. I see that you started your next trip report. Stephanie and I both had fun reading through your last one, so we'll be following along soon :thumbsup2

Day 8 - Tuesday the 10th - Part 3 - A Rainy Afternoon

Cool, a new Mickey towel was waiting for us on the bed when we arrived back in the room. (The kids had destroyed the first one a couple days earlier, before I could snap a photo.)

The kids all headed down towards the pool, but their swimming was cut short as another storm rolled through. We ended up just socializing in our room for a while. (They were looking at the photos from Cinderella's Royal Table and divvying them up.)

A couple hours later, it was time to start thinking about dinner. It was still raining and it wasn't going to let up, so we decided to skip spending the evening in the parks and just eat at a counter service restaurant somewhere instead. But where? Someone suggested that Contempo Cafe at the Contemporary resort had a good menu. Sounded fun to me. I've never stayed at the Contemporary, but have always loved visiting it. Cassie and her gang were interested in something a little more exciting, so they left Dewey with us and took Princess with them... and they spent the evening getting rained on in Epcot. So we all got cleaned up and headed towards the monorail together and then parted ways.

Of course everyone loves the fact that the monorail passes right through the hotel. I love the Mickey ears at the Fantasia gift shop and also the giant Mary Blair mural. (She was one of the coolest artists ever!)

So we headed downstairs and looked around a few minutes before heading towards the other side of the lobby.

We had to stop for a couple potty breaks for the younger ones, so Stephanie and and Steve decided to take a break from the stroller races.

Baby sleeping away. So darn precious!

And a few minutes later, the rest of the team arrived.

Buddy and his buddies...

We've been to Chef Mickey's a couple times before when the kids were smaller. A great place! But we wanted to try out Contempo Cafe this time :-)

We took a few minutes to look at the menu screens and then placed our orders at the self serve kiosks.

The kiosk printed a receipt that you took up to the cash registers to pay with, and then you came back to pick up your food when it was ready.

In the meantime, you could grab deserts or things from the cooler (pre-made salads/sandwiches, fruit, etc.).

OK. We are going to have to come back for cupcakes later!!!! (Pickle had her eye on that Frozen themed cupcake.)

We grabbed a couple tables and waited for our food to be ready. (They gave out pagers to let you know.)

Since my mom wasn't looking at the camera in the last photo, we'll give her another chance to smile at us now :)

We don't call her Pickle for nothin'

And a little while later, our food was ready!

I had the Spice-crusted Mahi Sandwich (with Creamy Coleslaw and Spicy Tartar Sauce on a Focaccia Roll with French Fries, Chilled Sesame Green Beans, or House-made Chips.) Wow, this was amazing. Not your typical counter service quality meal!!!

Stephanie had the Grilled Mahi Mahi (with Lobster Cream Sauce, Mixed Vegetables, and Rice). Also very delicious!!

Beth sat at our table with Baby. She had a Chicken Chop Salad (with Corn, Black Beans, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, and Cilantro Vinaigrette), which she seemed to enjoy.

Dewey and Pickle both had pizza.

And buddy had the kids hamburger.

I don't recall who had these from the other table, but here's a Bacon Cheeseburger and the Hot Smoked Turkey Sandwich (Turkey, Brie, Arugula, Green Apple Slices, Apple Butter, and Honey Mustard on Challah Bread with French Fries, Chilled Sesame Green Beans, or House-made Chips).

Chip and Dale shared the kids Tuna Salad Platter (with Pita, Grapes, and Apple Slices) I have no idea if they liked it or not. It didn't look too appetizing to me though. Ha!

As far as the others from the table, they duplicates of the stuff above, so I didn't take any more photos. All in all, this was an amazing meal considering it was counter service. It had a similar ambiance to Chef Mickey's and the same fun seeing the monorail pass by while you eat, but MUCH cheaper. Very nice! I would have rather been up on the top floor at California Grill, but Contempo Cafe is truly a hidden gem!

Day 8 - Tuesday the 10th - Part 4 - And a Rainy Evening

What's that you say? What about the cupcakes? Oh yeah, the best for last :-)

Pickle got a Frozen cupcake and shared a few bites with us.

It's pretty on the outside, but...

Caramel and more blue frosting in the inside?!?!? Oh. My. Goodness. Best cupcake ever!!!

Denise and Beth went for the Red Velvet and Strawberry Lemonade cupcakes.

Wow!!!

We spent quite a while hanging out and having fun. I think this may have been Stephanie's first chance to hold Baby all trip. (Baby was a hot commodity.)

My mom brought LOADS of glow sticks for the kids to play with while the adults talked.

After a while, the majority of the group was ready to head back to the Grand Floridian. Stephanie and I wanted to spend more time exploring and shopping in the Contemporary, so Buddy and Pickle went back with my parents and gang.

Stephanie and I explored the shops. We wanted to go outside and explore the grounds more thouroghly, but it was raining too hard so we stayed inside. It was pretty cool that the cast members set up a "Rainy Day" activity area for the guests to have fun playing inside.

Coloring.

Twister

And crafts

A nice touch for the resort guests!

So after a while, we decided to hop on the monorail and head back to the GF. We decided to go explore the Grand Floridian Villas (DVC property) before heading back to our room.

Not as grand as the main lobby, but still spectacular by any other standards!

After exploring the lobby we headed back to our room. It was close to 10pm when we got back to the room. Stephanie was ready to call it a night, so I headed over to pick up the kids from my parents' room. The kids were having fun, jumping on the beds, and generally giving their Papa a hard time. Ha!!

Wait, what's that outside? Oh, it's fireworks time. Let's go out and watch them on the balcony before heading back to our own room!

Awesome!

How can you top that for the evening?!?! You can't. So we headed back to our room and went to sleep!

.

OMG those cupcakes all look so good! I love me a good Disney cupcake. We need a drooling emoji. Baby is so cute. She looks like one of those Anne Geddes baby dolls.

lol! I wonder if theres a TR out there with a picture of you guys wondering who you are!! lol. Thats hilarious! (Imagine though you saw yourself on someone else's TR unintentionally?!)

What a fun evening hanging out at the CT!! So nice to have that nice laid back but still Disney-fied time!

And I have to say in every picture (That shes looking at the camera) your mom looks like shes having a real hoot of a time! Love it!!! :thumbsup2

The food looks awesome!! And it looks like you all had a lot of fun!

That's cool they had rainy day activities! Something to keep busy with instead of going crazy in the room or playing out in the rain. :)

Love the penguin fountain!!

Fireworks from your balcony must be amazing!

The lobby at the Villas looks so lovely! We are staying there for two nights in Sept. and I'm so excited!

Thanks for the review of Contempo Cafe - as we are needing to be a bit flexible this upcoming trip and staying at the Contemporary I was thinking we would wind up there once or twice so glad to see it go good reviews ... and those cupcakes look A-Maze-Ing!

I love, love, love the penguin fountain!

and so great to be able to see the Fireworks!

What a fun evening to relax with your family ... Rain or not it's always nice to have a relaxed evening. Your dinner at Contempo cafe looks very good and something for everyone's tastes. I was surprised it's a order and pick up system since last time we ate there it was a casual TS, but this was in the 80's when we stayed there. The wow was for sure those cupcakes and especially the delicious frozen cupcake from the outside to the inside yum! My husband and I also love to look through the resorts and shoppes and generally explore as you and Stephanie do. I think it was amazing the kids activities they had going on at CR during the rainy evening (( nice ))
Your entire trip report is making me excited for our WDW & GF trip in November, and also has me thinking of taking my granddaughters to CR in 2015 since it's been so many years. The 3 girls have been to CM many times and CG once and thought the hotel was cool.
As always your entire family is beautiful and enjoying reading along : )

It looks like you guys all took good advantage of the rain and had a wonderful time. :goodvibes

Yes, a drooling emoji would be nice! And I agree about Baby being so cute :goodvibes

Yeah, my mom is a kindred spirit. She loves her trips as much as the next DISBoarder :thumbsup2 Lots of fun!!!

Yeah, the fireworks from the balcony were a real treat!

That's great Phil. I'm really looking forward to your TR and seeing how you like staying at the Contemporary :yay:

I think you might be referring to the Concourse Steakhouse. We ate there with my mom when Buddy was a baby... and I think it was in the location that the Contempo Cafe is in now.

And thanks for the lovely feedback. I bet you will have an awesome visit in November and then taking your granddaughters in 2015 :thumbsup2

It looks like you guys all took good advantage of the rain and had a wonderful time. :goodvibes

The rain got annoying by the end of the week. (Seems like it rained more than normal while we were there.) But, there is just so much to do at WDW... inside and out... that it's hard to not have fun at Disney regardless of the weather :cheer2:

Day 9 - Wednesday the 11th - Part 1 - Morning at EPCOT

The plan for today was to start off at EPCOT, come back to the resort in the early afternoon, have the kids put on their "nice clothes" for group photos, and then meet up for dinner at 'Ohana.

I'm not sure where aunt Denise and her gang spent most of the day, but the rest of us started off at EPCOT. Cassie's gang wasn't in a hurry, so we left without them and they caught up to us later. The trek over to the park was smooth this time around. Sweet!

We started off with a photo at the entrance. I have loved getting this shot the last few times we've visited. I wish that I had settled on getting the shot at the exact same spot each time, and that I hadn't forgotten to get the shot on a few of the visits, but I'm glad to have the ones I've got.

After the obligatory photo, we headed over to use our FP+ for Test Track. My parents have been on the new version a few times, but we still hadn't had a chance to check it out yet.

We paired up into groups. My dad, Princess, and I built one car. And then my mom and Buddy built one, and then finally Stephanie and Pickle built the last car.

We had no idea what we were doing, but Princess came up with this for us.

And then we were off!!

And the other car...

Cassie's gang wasn't with us, but they rode it that morning too... here's their ride shot.

To be honest, I'm not sure that I preferred the new version over the old one. the technology was cool, but it seemed sort of sterile. It was still fun though :thumbsup2

The exit area is certainly cooler though. The kids loved playing on the race track.

And picking out their future cars.

We decided to head over to Starbucks for a late morning snack.

We aren't big Starbucks fans normally, but Princess loves their frozen drinks so we grabbed a couple and some baked treats.

Pickle and Buddy both got cake pops. The consensus was that they were nasty and ended up in the trash.

I had a chocolate croissant, and it was actually pretty good though.

Princess was having a bit of a rough morning, but nothing like a frozen treat and loving Papa to cheer her up :cheer2:

So we hung out for a while in one of our favorite spots in all of WDW. (Which is the area in front of the passage way over to the Land Pavilion in front of Innoventions.) It's even better at night when the sidewalk lights up. But we love the relaxing music that they play in the background. A while back, Stephanie figured out that that music was made by a dude named David Arkenstone and the track is available on Spotify. Cool!

http://open.spotify.com/track/49Hmi9u406YK7fUu5eJg78

A little while later, we headed over to ride Spaceship Earth. But we stopped for a potty break first. While we were waited, Pickle decided to give me some funny faces.

I guess it runs in the family :rotfl2:

.

Oh My Gosh! Cupcake Palooza! We seriously may have to stop by Contempo In September, those cupcakes are calling my name! Jeremy and I ate there when we stayed at Bay Lake and we loved the food! I think it is an underrated Quick Service Location for sure!

Those photos over the years are such a great thing to have! How amazing how they have all grown up!

I am on the fence about whether I like the new Test Track or not, I love the design your own car aspect of it, but the inside when you are actually in the cars is a little blah! It is still really cool though! :goodvibes

Those photos through the years at Epcot are priceless!

Doesn't everyone's mood improve with a frozen drink from Starbucks? Your chocolate croissant looked pretty tasty. I would have trouble sharing that!
