Ok, how did I miss this? Because I've been staying off the internet and out of the stores shopping wise! I've done so well not spending $ and budgeting that now I'm out of the loop.

I'm really sad that Felicity and Elizabeth are retiring. DD8 got Felicity for Christmas and Elizabeth for her birthday last year with a few, very few accessories and outfits, thinking we have a few years to build upon.
This is just a vent post for me, because this year, we really wanted to simplify Christmas for our kids since we are dealing with the aftermass of a failed small business that really hurt us. My old instinct would be to buy a lot she doesn't have and then save it and give it to her for future Christmas, bday gifts, etc. Now, we just can't do it, so I guess I'll have to ask her what she really wants and limit it to a few and then perhaps find in on Ebay, etc. in the future. My older kids understand the reality of our situation and the economy, but DD8 still believes in Santa, so we wanted to make it magical for her.
What have others done when other AG dolls have retired?

I ordered Samantha when she retired. Don't have any of her accesseries or her friend though. I figure there's alway ebay.

Luckily I already had Kirsten before she retired but I only have 1 of her outfits. I guess I'll do ebay for those too if I decide I want them.

You can also find period costumes for the dolls at craft shows and things. You don't HAVE to get all American girl brand stuff. ;)

I'm still heartbroken over Samantha and Nellie, they are my favorite historical dolls.

Your daughter probably only has a few years left of actively playing with the dolls (most girls seem to give them up about age 10 - yes, I know there are exceptions but that seems to be the general trend). So not buying up a bunch to give "later" is probably a good decision, both on your wallet now and in the future, because you could end up with a bunch of expensive presents your daughter doesn't want!

Also, my daughter likes to dress her Samantha doll in the JLY doll clothes as much or more than her period stuff. Your daughter will still get a lot of enjoyment out of the dolls, even if the things you do buy are not Felicity or Elizabeth specific items.

I have said for years that I wanted to fix my DD's dolls up for my grandchildren one day. I guess it wont happen now. They are missing a few parts to their outfits because my girls played with them, and I really wish that I had left them in the box. :guilty: I think we have four or five of them plus the Bitty Twins.

I am very lucky because I could afford to buy the clothes that DD10 wanted for Kirsten and now Felicity.

For Kirsten I waited too long and went to ebay to get them.

For Felicity I just ordered them through the AG website. Her birthday is coming up plus Christmas so now I have a couple of gifts taken care of.

I also pick up AG type clothes from various crafters at the Yellow Daisy Festival in Stone Mountain Park in Stone Mountain, GA. Although I noticed this year most of the crafters have raised their prices a bit so the clothes weren't quite as cheap as in prior years.

There are sellers on eBay who have historical costumes - even when Felicity and Elizabeth go away, you will probably have the opportunity to buy those types of outfits from other sources.
