Heading to the Westcoast for a Disney fix, and DPN WEstFest 2010 - TR has Begun

I'm a seasoned veteran of WDW but I have been to DLR two other times. My first trip was before boarding the Disney Magic on it's return journey to Florida after spending the summer in California. My other trip was last may for a gathering of Disney Fans from the DPN forum (Disney Podcast Network) and the even that they call WestFest (WestFest is an an unofficial gathering of the podcatstrers of the DPN and the fans/ forum members of the DPN) Well I'm heading back again for this years WestFest which once again is being held the first weekend of May.

My last two trips I stayed at the Disneyland Hotel, but this time I have decided to go on the cheaper side and stay at one of the neighboring hotels. This year I will be staying at the Anaheim Dessert Inn and suites (in the DPN community it is know as the DPN dorm room as most of the DPNer's stay there). This year I will be there from April 28th to May 4th 2010.

My plans are as follows

April 28th 2010 - Arvie and check into the Desert Inn and Suites (AKA DPN Dorm Room) then head into DCA for some lunch and to see what changes have happened in the year since I have been there.

April 29th 2010 - My day will probably start at Disneyland I don't have any real plans other then to see what happens. This evening will be the first meet of WestFest 2010 with Imagineering My Way's Lost Bar Libations Mixer at 9:00 Pm at the Lost bar at the Disneyland hotel.

April 30th 2010 - another go with the flow day that will most likely involve DCA in the afternoon as there are two WestFest meets today.
1:30 PM is "One last time with Aladdin and Jasmine": Hyperion Theater: hosted by Coconut Wireless
Come join Joel from Meandering Mouse Club TV at the Hyperion Theater as we watch "Disney's Aladdin - A Musical Spectacular" a a final time before it is replaced by "Toy Story: The Musical".

The following will be a list of terms that may come up during this PTR/TR

DF - Disney Fundamentalist (or Disney Fan, Disney Freak) the original meaning behind it is someone who does not want to see anything changed in Disneyland because that is the way it was when Walt died or something similar

DF Hat - a set of Mickey Ears with the letters DF on it usually worn backwards

This is a form of punishment for quoting ride spiels, singing along with a parade, providing information that someone already knows, or acting like a Cast member when you aren't one.

The DPN Desert Island Party! The Fantasy Isle de Lorien! (sometimes just refereed to as the island) - a over 500 page section of the DPN forums that is headed up by Queen Lo! our island queen (She is also referred to as Auntie Lo as well)

Shes the one in the light blue shirt with the tiara on in this picture from last year.

DPN Dorm Room - The Anaheim Deseret Inn and Suites so named as most of the DPNer's (Podcaster// form members) stay there as it is the cheapest and the closest hotel to Disneyland (it's closer then the on site hotels).

And of course the most important of all DPN WestFest it self- A unofficial gathering of DPN Podcaster, listeners and forum members at the Disneyland Resort held annually on the first weekend of May for the past 2 years. This year will be the third official WestFest, there was one unofficial one that happed in 2007 when a group of podcasters and fans gathered together coincidentally in Disneyland the term WestFest was first used to describe this meeting. The first Official one was held in 2008 and saw some of the DPN's WDW regulars make the pilgrimage for their first visit to Disneyland, this was also the year that the DF Hat was born. WestFest 2009 saw a few more people come to it that had joined the DPN since the previous ones, also it was the first WestFest to have events hosted by forum members as well as the podcasters. This year that has continued.

WestFest Banquet - This year will mark the second time that one is being held, the first one was in 2008 and they had Ye Haw Bob who normally performs at the Port Orleans Riverside Resort in WDW fly in to do his act for them. This year we will have a group of past and present Jungle Cruise skippers doing stand up comedy.

My trip began early in the morning of April 28th 2010, with a flight from Toronto Lester B. Person International Airport aka YYZ, bound of LAX. The day started out OK once I got to the airport and then things took some odd turns at the airport. Check in at the Air Canada desk went fine and then from there I head over to the US Customs pre-clearance area, I got someone that was a real stickler, he asked me if i Had an itinerary with me winch I had forgotten to print off a copy of my info from Air Canada that had my return air info, at first I was worried that he wouldn't let me through. Eventually he decided that I wasn't a threat and sent me trough to the security are of the airport. Once there I headed through the metal detector I was called over by the airport security person who told me I could put on my shoes well he proceed to go through one of my carry on bags as I guess I had kind of packed a little to much in it. He may have been new as he asked his buddy that was off to the side if it was OK to have a power bar in a carry on bag. After that everything went smoothly and I went and waited for my flight well I listed to my iPod well keeping it charged on my laptop. My flight went very smoothly form there, we encountered some turbulence over the rockies due to some storm activity.

Once I landed in LAX I went to the baggage carousel to claim my bag which was amongst one of the last ones to be unloaded, I guess that what happens when your bag is one of the first to be checked in for your flight. From there I headed to the supershutle boarding area and I realized that I had forgotten to print out my confirmation from them, which was not a problem as they just radioed the office to confirm that I had a booking with them. It must be really common as a couple of other people came up as well who had done the same thing. On the way to the Desert Inn and Suites we had to make a couple of stops first at the Paradise Pier Hotel and then some other place before stopping at my destination.

After checking in and finding out that my room wasn't ready yet I took my stuff to the lockers that the hotel has for guest to leave there bags in. I grabbed my park ticket and the bag that I was taking into the park with me. Before heading into DCA I tried to take some picture and the batteries in my camera were dead no problem I have a spare set which were also dead, luckily I also carry an extra set of long lasting non - rechargeable batteries with just in case this happens. I then got a few quick pictures of both parks from the esplanade.

After exchanging my print at home ticket for one of the regular park ticket, my first stop was Taste Pilots Grill for lunch. After lunch I headed over to Toy Story Mania on my way over there I here someone calling my name and I kind of ignored it as I here my name called in a lot of places and they are usually calling a little kid. Then someone calls me again and I recognized the voice as someone I had met the year before from the DPN and I turned around and saw a group of people that I was going to try and meet over at Toy Story, they had just gotten off of it and were going to head over to there hotels to check in. It was close to 3 o'**** which was when they told me to return to see if my room was ready at the Desert Inn and Suites aka The DPN Dorm Room. Well I was waiting for the other ho were driving over and had parked at the Mickey and Friends parking structure I was able to get my room. I then went over to the locker I had my bags in and then headed up to the room that I would be calling home for the next few days.

Now I mentioned now and in the PTR part of this trip that this hotel gets referred to as the DPN Dorm Room, this is because one it is cheap and also because most of the out of town members of the DPN there. Also since there are a number of us that book it around the same time and for the same time period they put us all together in the same section of the hotel. After dropping my stuff in my room I went to see if any one else had checked in and saw Matt (The esquire who hosts the Mouse Droppings Podcast, it offers a somewhat satirical look at the parks and he occasionally doers parody songs, it is not always family friendly). He was actually in the room two doors down from me. After unpacking some of my stuff I heeded back over to DCA to get some pictures and get in some practice on Toy Story Mania.

First was some photopass pics at the golden gate bridge at the entrance to DCA

Then I got some pics of the construction on the little mermaid attraction.

Then I took some pictures of Paradise pier and the construction of cars land.

After riding on Toy Story Midway Mania and getting this as my score,

it was time to head over to the park that started it all. After crossing under the train tunnel and reading this plaque.

and walking down the Middle of Main Street USA,

and passed the newly dedicated door to the Sherman Brothers,

It was time to play find the castle (Just a little WDW humor, ours is bigger)

it was time to head into the rest of the park.

After finding the castle and walking across the bridge to Fantasyland, I ran into some friends from the DPN Kestra and NextGen (these are there board names as I can't rememberer the real name) and we rode every ride in fantasy land in about an hour as NextGen uses an ECV and Disneyland lets them and a few people with them use the accessible lines for the Fantasyland dark rides.

First we walked onto Snow White and Pinocchio in the regular lines then we used the back entrance to Peter Pan and all three of us rode in the same boat. This is one of the dark rides I like at Disneyland much beater then at WDW. After that we rode Toad and then Dumbo followed by Cassy Jr.

Up next we headed to the Jungle cruise.

This scene is so much better at Disneyland then at WDW and they need to redo it at WDW.

As it began to get dark at the parks I meet up with some other friends and we had some fun with the photopass photographer in front of the castle.

After our fun in front of the castle it was time to find something to ride. Some how we ended up on small world and the cast member wasn't really paying attention to the people that were being loaded. Our boat actually made a big splash as we came out of the loading area. We also noticed that it was sitting a little low in the water. We were worried that we might get stuck, are boat did move along very slowly and we ended up getting pushed by the boat behind us a lot. Once we got off we headed out of the park for the night but before leaving we needed to have some more fun with a photopass photographer.

Once that was done with some of us headed to deferent hotels. When I got back to the Desert Inn I was greeted by a friend from last years WestFest with "there's my favorite Canadian", POD (or Pat) had just arrived and was unpacking his car.

After that I joined a couple of friends for dinner at Mimi's Cafe , I don't remember what was ordered as it was about a year ago. During dinner a few things came up about various things about the DPN and also what actually happed to MouseFest, apparently Disney wanted to charge them to take rides down for the various meets instead of them waiting in the regular line as it had gotten so big.

After that it was time to head back to my room for the night. I decided then that I was going to use the Magic Morning option on my park ticket. I put out a message to the people that follow me on twitter and Facebook that were there for WestFest as well that I would be in the parks for Magic Morning the next morning.

Today was the first day of WestFest meets, there was only one tonight at the lost bar.

My day began with me heading over to Disneyland early that morning for Magic Morning. After crossing the street and heading under the Monorail beam,

I saw one of the shuttle buses and had to take a picture of it as it had some of my favorite charters Huey, Dewy, & Louie and Donald on it.

Then it was time to head into Disneyland again.

Then it was time to head down Main Street USA

First on my agenda was a ride on the subs. As soon as I got into line I got directed right into one of the boarding corals, score. After riding the subs I headed over to ride Space Mountain. As I was getting off of Space Mountain I found out that one of the pockets of my bag had been left open and some stuff dumped out of it. I quickly grabbed it all just hopping that I didn't become responsible for making Space Mountain go 101. Then it was time for a ride on the Matterhorn. Well I was in line for this I put out on Twitter and Facebook where I was and what I had done already. Also I tok a quick pic of the sub lagoon. If only WDW still had theres.

As I was in line another DPN member came up to me and joined me on the ride. I ended up spending most of the rest of the day with him. He had actually driven all the way to California from Michigan .


After that we decided to head over to DCA to try and get in some practice for Toy Story Mania, but it was down, this was a bit of a continuing theme for the next couple of days. We were hopping it would be up again by Saturday as the second meet of the Day was going to be there. Well we were heading in we meet up with another DPN member Joel who is from Hawaii, but had just come from a visit to WDW and Universal studios Florida. We stopped at a photopass photographer to get a quick picture of us.

Joel had to leave us as he was trying to find out some information from guest services about something he wanted to do for the meet he was hosting the next day. Dave (the guy who had driven from Michigan) and I then headed over to Tower of Terror for a quick ride on that.

Then we ended up heading back over to DCA. On the way out some fool with a stroller wasn't looking where they were pushing it and ended up running over one of my feet with it. Then we took a ride on pirates where both our butts ended up getting wet from water still on the seats.

After grabbing some lunch we met up with some others in the New Orleans square area and took a lap of the park on the train. When we returned to New Orleans Square we then headed to the Mint Juilp bar for a mint Juilp, I think we may have ended up over whelming the poor cast members at the French Market with 5 or 6 people ordering them at once. We joked that it was the unofficial Mint Juilp meet (at this year's WestFest it an official meet).

After that we went on the hunted mansion as a group and someone in our group said that the CM in the stretch room apparently screamed in his ear. After that we broke off into some smaller groups to get dinner and to get ready for tonights meet at the Lost Bar.

The lost bar meet began around 8:00 or so and people drifted in and out between then and midnight.
