parents, hug your children.

I went to my daughters' high school today expecting to watch my girls in the homecoming festivities and have a pleasant day with my neighbors.

we had a lovely morning, filled with music -- our traditional homecoming parade.

and then, just as the game was getting under way, the word began to travel through the crowd.

one of the seniors, a nice young man who was president of the student executive council and played clarinet in the band, wasn't at the school...

he was driving home after last night's pep rally when he had an accident with his car. he was only 17.

the halftime festivities were cancelled. the band, the cheerleaders, the dance team...they were all sent home. the football players were kept isolated during halftime, so that they wouldn't fnd out -- we couldn't forfeit the game.

my daughters have known this young man since elementary school. they're both devastated.

and my sister reminded me...when the yong man was in 5th grade, he was in a show at the elementary school. he sang "I won't grow up" from Peter Pan.

and now he really won't.

That's very sad.

I also think it's sad that they kept the football team in the dark- of course a game can be forfeited.

:grouphug: to you and your daughters as you go through this terrible time. What a loss for the family and community.

How sad for the family, the school and the community. My condolences.

Prayers for all those who are feeling a loss and feeling lost right now. :grouphug:

I definatley agree. It's only a game. What a selfish thought on the coaches. Someone lost their child, kids lost their friend, teachers lost their student. You can't compare that to a game.

My heart goes out to his family and his friends. So sad to lose a child. I hope that your daughter is doing well.

Last year a very beloved teacher at my S's school was killed going home from school on the Friday of Labor Day weekend. The admistration knew about the accident before the football game but they did not tell anyone until after the game. The football coach knew but kept it from the team so it didn't affect their performance. The teachers knew and started to tell the students after halftime. The football team weren't told until after the game.

I think that it was the right move. Flame away.

Since I don't know him this is only speculation but I bet he would not have wanted the team to forfeit the game.

I am not privy to the decisons the school administrators made, but I was told that the young man's mother came to the school to speak to them just before the game. I suppose the family's wishes in the matter were taken into consideration.

I'm told that the halftime festivities and etc. will take place at our next home game, in two weeks.

This situation and others like it are so sad. This is what happened when one of our star basketball players didn't arrive to take the bus to an away game. He'd been working in the next town over and was hurrying to make it home in time to catch the bus. His daddy, a teacher at the school, didn't know he wasn't on the bus, so he and the child's mother were at the game. No one said a word to the team or anyone else, but the boy's family was informed as soon at it became apparent. Everyone else was told after the game.

I agree the games can be forfeited in situations like this, but it doesn't seem to be what they do.

We also lost a 9th grader right before school let out for the summer. He competed in some type of motorcross and had an accident and died instantly. It just stuns your entire community.

It's just devastating beyond belief. :grouphug: for all those suffering in your community and for your girls.

funny how kids grieve. the young man was student council president, so he had his own parking space in the student lot. right now some of the kids are in the parking lot for an imprmptu memorial service.

Oh my.... My thoughts go out to everyone touched by this tragic accident.
