HDDR or Mickey's Backyard BBQ (or WCC) for DS7

We've done HDDR twice, and never Mickey's Backyard BBQ. I have two boys, one will be 7 1/2, and one will be 13 months. I know most people vote for HDDR, but we're considering trying something different. DS7 will be at least 9 by the next time we go, so he may not appreciate it at that point. That's why we're considering it now.

My main concern is that he is super laid back (not shy). This is of course a good thing, but if there are hordes of children trying to dance and meet characters, he'll just never get to them unless I intervene, and I don't want to be like that. Would it make sense to get there later after the initial rush? Should I skip both and save a TS credit and take him to WCC? I'd love any advice. Thanks!

My nieces were Okay with BBQ but if ur little guy is more shy, I'd pass because what you described is accurate.
If you've done HDd( which we really enjoy) I think WCC would be a fun change. It's fun but not intimidating and with interaction at ur own family dining table, even better if he doesn't want to participate in the round up( but encourage him.. So cute)
The food is good and I think it'd be a great choice
Have a great time whatever you decide!

I haven't been to either, but we had the same HDDR vs. MBYBBQ debate. My three sons, ages 6, 8, and 11, voted for the BBQ just because it sounded like more fun, more laid back than a formal performance and, frankly, because I showed them a post with another DIS mom mentioning that her son ate four Mickey bars for dessert. AYCE treats while hanging out was a big draw. Not the characters, not dancing (even though I know at least one of them will be in the middle of it all). They did think the type of entertainment offered sounded better than a theatrical show. I think it will be better for their short attention spans.
YMMV and GL! You'll have a good time either way. :-)
ETA: We're going to WCC, too, but I fret that there will be pressure to participate there, where all but one of us is definitely more for watching those kinds of antics. But as with the Mickey bars, there the draw was endless milkshakes.

Thanks for the responses so far!

DS7 isn't shy, but he isn't assertive. That's why I was thinking it might work if he didn't try to get near the characters at MBYBBQ in the beginning.

I love HDDR, DH can take it or leave it. I showed both to my son on YouTube, and he couldn't choose either lol.

I'd love any more thoughts on where to go. Also, would it be feasible to get to MBYBBQ late to not have to compete with the crowds?
