Having a very hard time with DS going off to college

AND thanksgiving is just around the corner!!!:cool1: And my birthday is tomorrow! I should be hearing from him tomorrow and we get to see him Wed. night. THe only bad thing about Wed. is that I work late, and we will be pretty late getting up there, but we will go out and get appetizers and dessert at a restaurant to celebrate my birthday!!!:thumbsup2

Happy Birthday!!!!

and

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!

Just popping in to say Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Enjoy your time with your kids!!!

I pick up mine tomorrow and I am really looking forward to seeing him. I have only seen him once in the past three weeks, and that was that awful night that we drove down to make sure he was ok after the girl trouble.

I have to take him back Sunday- back to classes again on Monday ;)

Hey everyone... good news and a mom vent!

The good news is that DS passed his fraternity test. I guess they have only 2 chances to pass a test and he said he was studying a bunch for it, so I am very happy for him! although... he did text me at 12:30 AM to tell me about it!:faint: But I'll take a text from him any time of day (or night!).

The vent... I can't even tell you what it is that he did. It is something I am pretty angry about. poor judgement on his part, but he did say that he won't be doing it again. WHen I told him I was glad he learned his lesson, he actually got defensive... even though he already said he wouldn't do it again! :furious: I told him that I appreciate his honesty with me, I truly do, and that he is an adult and making his own choices, but this was one thing that I just will not be ok with. :furious: I hope that my response did not close off communication, but I needed to tell him how I felt about it. I hope he can respect that as I am respecting him making his own choices and giving him space.

Oh my! I'm sure he'll see that your response was measured and that it could have been worse.

I hope you're having a great birthday!

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a great visit, devoid of girlfriend angst. :)

My DS got home Saturday and will be home through Sunday. It's been great having some relaxed time that's not structured from stem to stern.

PRINCESS VIJA I wish you a very Happy Birthday

My Boy comes home tomorrow :yay::yay: I am so excited almost like Christmas
He has to be back to school on Sunday but will be back in 2 weeks for a nice long Christmas break or whatever they call it. Did I mention how excited I am?:rotfl2:

I hope everyone enjoys their visits with our babies.

This Mama Bear is not happy-dd got stuck in some road construction, hope to see her about 8:15 instead of 7.

Hope all of your college students arrive home safely!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Eta: DD made it home ok. Apparently an accident in the construction zone caused the traffic snafu. Needless to say, our dog is demanding all of DD's attention right now :)

So fun to hear about everyone's kiddos coming home! My Big Guy is here! We just saw him this weekend, but we were so busy Friday and Saturday, doing the Eagle Project, that I barely saw him, and Sunday he slept til noon and I was exhausted from Friday and Saturday! I was able to sit and talk with him after his arrival. Made me very happy and he tolerated all my questions!

The Calc Exam....ugh... He got the 2nd highest score in the class, and scaled, its a C. He is so bummed about it! If he ends up with a C in there, he will probably lose his scholarship. A bigger concern...will he be ready for Calc II? He really has been studying and working with tutors. Even the professor said the test ended up being too hard and too long. I guess the person that did better than DS must have done very well anyway. Oh well, the Final, then the grade, then its OVER.

He was in a programming Competition this week. He did it for extra credit, and to see what it was like. They were to write 10 programs, for specific things, in the 3 hours. He got 3 written, two successfully. He knew he wouldn't do well. The person that won programmed 5 successfully. It was open to all, not just Freshmen. I'm glad he did it!

We are headed to visit our Old Folks tomorrow!

Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy your College kids!

Enjoy your visit! That stinks that he had the 2nd highest grade and got a C :furious: It just doesn't seem fair. Hopefully he will do good. And that is awesome about the competition. DS went to FBLA nationals and didn't place, but I'll tell you it motivated him to not only place, but he says he will win next time he goes! I bet it will motivate your DS even more!

Have a great visit!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!!

Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. I am so happy DS is home. we picked him up last night. Apparently we didn't understand what he said, and we could have picked him up a day earlier:headache: Oh well, lesson learned. We will make sure to know for certain when we can get him next time.

We went to Red Robin to celebrate my birthday. We never make it to dessert, so this time we ordered appetizers and dessert. It was fun!:thumbsup2

He talked a lot and we learned so much of what he has been up to. When we picked him up we met 3 of his fraternity brothers including his big brother. That was very nice. Very nice guys.

I am just so sad that I have to work tomorrow. I could have had an extra day with him tomorrow. Oh well... It is more $$$ to pay bills and maybe put toward the cruise next year. I have to keep telling myself that...

Even though I miss my "little boy" terribly, I am so happy to know he is doing well, is thriving in college, has made some great friends, doing well with grades, and just seems to be heading in the right direction in life. I am proud, happy and thrilled! (nod to the Apollo 13 wives go to statement!):rotfl:

have a great day everyone and enjoy your visits. Then when they all head back, we can come back, share our great stories and help each other until Christmas break!:thumbsup2:santa:

All I have to say is that my dd still lives at home as she is a senior in high school. She has been out of school now for 3 days, and she is driving me literally nuts. Looking forward to next year when she will head off to school, and I will actually be happy when she comes home for a holiday. Not feeling it right now. 16yo girls think they know everything and tell you that nonstop all day every day everything they think you are doing wrong.:rolleyes1

Things start to get better when they head off to college. They start to realize how "normal" their life is as well as how smart their parents are. Doesn't happen as soon as you drop them off...it happens a bit more gradually. You should start to notice it by next Thanksgiving!

DD and I got the tree set up on Wednesday evening, and will be baking cookies tomorrow afternoon. We are having a very pleasant weekend with her home!

Well... how was everyone's visit? I think most of us from the beginning were looking forward to this weekend as it would be a longer visit.

For us it was VERY nice! Got great conversation on Wed. night at Red Robin. Had nice visit with the relatives. We went to see the new Hunger games movie yesterday and caught up on some shows he missed that we DVR'd for him. Saint Nick came early too!:santa: Since he won't be home for St. Nick, he got his treats early. Including a Nerf gun set. thanks to whoever mentioned that earlier in the thread. He LOVED it and soon all 4 of us were vying for the 2 guns and having fun here. It was a great visit, and I thought I would be better taking him back to school, but I was a little teary eyed initially when he left. But then the 3 of us remaining at home got back into our "new normal" and I am good to go. I guess it helps that he will be done with the semester in less than 2 weeks!!!!:cool1: That should be lots of fun!

So how did everyone's visit go???

So glad you had a great visit Princess Vija!

Ours was nice too. Having a full week was amazing. It felt like he had been here all along. I even got to take him to lunch by himself one day. :) And good-bye wasn't full of angst like all the other visits, because we know he'll be home in a week and a half for 5 weeks.

I hope everyone else had a nice visit. :goodvibes

Well, my DS has only been back for a bit, but already had a piece of news for us. His roommate just informed him he's not returning next semester. Yikes. I guess he's back at the mercy of the roommate gods again. Just when it seemed like he was finally getting settled. Sigh.

I have a quick question for those of you who have had kids lose a roommate.

We saw my niece on Thanksgiving. She is away at school and is moving out of her double room into a single. She (and her mom, my sister) swears that the roommate she is leaving will now have to pay the higher price for a single room. I thought that seemed odd, but didn't ask too many questions. Of course, now that it's possible my son might be the one left by himself, I am wondering if that's something schools do.

Anyone have experience with this at other schools? I know I should call my son's school but don't know yet if his roommate has notified anyone officially and don't want to jump the gun on it.

Sounds pretty much like our visit with DD. We went to a movie, played some games, caught up on some TV shows, had Thanksgiving with friends and family, and had some great talks. DD also managed to catch up on her sleep and get a great deal of school work done.

Glad you had a good visit! I hope the roommate situation works out. There are certainly some *interesting* roommates out there so hopefully he ends up with a good one!

Our situation was different because it happened at the beginning of the school year. There wasn't any doubt in my mind that they would fill that empty room so I didn't even think about a potential extra expense. DD did ask her RA about it and he said they wouldn't have to pay more. She was really banking on that room staying empty!

I can't believe they would charge extra if one roommate leaves. If there was a dispute between them and one was moving out, maybe.....but even then I would be surprised. In the case of your DS, he can't help it if the other guy is dropping out so it doesn't seem right that they would charge him more.

I can tell you what happens at my DD's school if a roommate leaves. Of course, YMMV! If a roommate leaves, the roommate that is in the room has the option to pay the single surcharge. That is the easiest for the university. Or - if there are two students in a similar situation, they can "opt" to become roommates, i.e. they know each other, and feel that they would get along. This might be preferable to the random roommate placement that may or may not occur. Or - the students can opt to remain in the double room without paying the single surcharge, and could randomly have a roommate assigned "at any time" throughout the second semester.

My DD had a friend whose roommate left last year at the semester. She simply did not have the budget for the additional $2000 per semester for the single surcharge. This friend did not have a roommate assigned in the second semester, so basically, she had a double room with no roommate for the cost of the double room.

DD's boyfriend will be in a similar situation, his roommate is leaving at the semester as well. I know that DD is hoping that he will not be getting a new roommate.

The other thing to mention (again based on DD's college) is there is a priority list. If someone had a roommate leave in the first week of the fall semester, they would be "higher" on the list to get a roommate assigned, than someone whose roommate leaves at the semester break.

There is no way I would pay the single surcharge, unless I (or my DD) specifically would have requested it. It isn't the student's responsibility to be able to find a roommate, it is on the university to handle that. I'm sure the housing contract would have more info.

That sounds like a very reasonable policy!

It was great seeing DD. We got the tree decorated on Wednesday. (St nick was coming Thursday morning for a partial delivery of stuff). Thanksgiving was a great day! Dd spent some time with good friends, her and I baked 4types of Christmas cookies, and she headed back yesterday afternoon. She won't be home until the 19th.

She will only be home for 2weeks, as she is doing a j-term class. I am a little bummedd, such a short amount of time.

My DS's roommate moved out the 2nd week of school, into a different dorm. DS never did get another roommate, and we were not charged extra. At one point, there was someone looking to change rooms, but there were also 2 or 3 rooms that had a spot in them. According to my DS, he would have to "accept" the person looking in writing. My DS never did meet the guy- I don't know if he never came because he opted into one of the other rooms or what. My DS was a little concerned about some random person moving in because he does NOT want to live with a smoker.

Anyway, he was supposed to room with another guy for the spring semester, but that guy has decided to commute again. So- DS will most likely have a roommate in his room next semester. I don't know if the school will give DS the information of the new person or if he will just go back in January to some stranger in his room. Again, DS's biggest fear is if the person is a smoker or a big partier. I worry that DS has been so accustomed to being alone that he will have a hard adjustment to a new roommate.

We just paid his housing registration fee for next year- they waste no time at this school! He is no longer eligible to live in traditional housing. All upperclassmen must live in the apartment style or suite style housing or live off campus. He and five of his friends are hoping to get into an apartment style housing. Hopefully it all works out!
