Have you ever reported another driver?

This morning at 5:30 am an obvious third shifter tosses a beer bottle out of his ride and I swerve, but end up running over it. I got in front of him and got on the brakes to stop him in case my tire was damaged. Instead he wanted to start some trouble, but backed down when he realized I was carrying (Love Texas and CHL!).

My wife says I should’ve gotten his license plate and reported him to the police. 1) For an open container and 2) For littering.

Hindsight being 20/20. Has anyone ever reported another driver for any type traffic violations and what came of it? Will the police actually act on something like this?

P.S. The GAWDs must’ve been looking out for me because the tire was OK.

I did call 911 when a car was driving, or should I say swerving all over the road with two flat tires. The driver was obviously impaired. The police were able to catch up with him and he was actually ill (insulin shock) behind the wheel.

No, but I remember when I was a kid and we were on the way to my grandparents' house, my dad stopped and called. Yes, back in the days prior to cell phones. We went over the bridge to PA, and he either called or gave the plate number to an attendant. The guy was weaving, so there was no way he was passing him. Sure enough, a police car came up and pulled the guy over.

Unless the police witnessed it, they probably wouldn't do anything. You could have thrown it out your window and tried to blame it on another driver.
As hard as it is, I try to let these things go. It's not worth dying over.

Funny you should mention it, I called on someone the other day (my first time!)

Guess we have scary drivers in Texas! When I was driving home the other day, the car in front of me swerved. The driver was reaching over to the passenger side of the vehicle. As I was passing them up (taking my exit to the right) I looked to my left at the SUV again. This time the passenger door was open and someones leg/foot was hanging out! The driver didn't pull over or slow down. THIS SCARED ME TO DEATH! I had already taken the exit, and was unable to get the license, but I called the police. I was shaking when I got home. All I could think about was, what if it was somebody trying to escape? Was somebody being abused? Was it someone who was depressed? I'll never know, but I'm glad I called.

I have called 911 on a impaired driver and one other time stopped and told the police officer we saw in the parking lot about another driver, he radioed it in and went right after the person. In both cases we were almost hit and saw them almost go head on into another driver.

Celluloidgal, may I ask what became of your report? Your encounter sounds somewhat like mine. But I'm also of the belief that if the police don't witness the offense there's nothing they can do. But I would like to know.

I called on an erratic semi once. It was speeding, then slowing down, swerving, and almost hit csar multiple times (including me!).

The funny thing is that I called in the area of a State Police post. I said, "He's about 2 miles south of you, coming your direction". He was apparently too sleepy to be behind the wheel.

DH and I have when a driver seemed way impaired (DH is a police officer and knows what to look for).

Unfortunately, I have not heard anything. The officer who took the information seemed concerned, and took as much information as I could give him. He repeated questions several times (probably to make sure of my responses)...I only hope it looked more serious than it was

We called on Monday about an Expedition packed with kids, and the woman in the front passenger seat had a 4 year old in her lap. They were flying, about 80, down I35 in Texas. Dangerous, already. It infuriates me to see children unbuckled, but in the front seat! After passing him twice and seeing it, we called. One fender bender and that child would have been dead...

I don't think they ever caught him, but we felt better calling anyways. Maybe the next time they'll be caught.

We've reported drivers twice that I can remember..

Once was a drunk driver that was all over the interstate. We followed him for a bit with the police on the phone so they could find him

The other one was a older model sedan that had what must have been a woman and 8 kids sitting on top of each other in it. Including one on her lap and the kids were all over the car. They pulled into a local pizza place. We called the police and gave them the plates and told them to give them about an hour and you can probably just watch them pile into the car and try to leave.

I contacted the Police once about a road rage incident that occured behind me. A van and a car were both trying to get the spot behind me, neither one yielding. Both were inches from my back bumper. Eventually the van driver rammed the side of the car on purpose, causing damage.

As soon as I could, I sped away from them and contact Police giving descriptions of the vehicles, drivers and incident. I don't know what happened after that.

I've given up calling to report any drivers. Every time I have, I've gotten this "why are you bothering us?" attitude from the cops.

Yes, several times. Once when I was front ended (yes, front ended) in a toll booth as a guy backed up, hit my car, then raced off. I gave chase, called the police and they tracked him down for hit and run. Also once for a drunk, I called, followed behind till squad came along from my 911 and then left it to them.
