If you are looking for a "quiet beach" area, try crossing the border into North Carolina and check out a little island called ocean isle beach, about 8-10 miles north of Cherry Grove Beach. We spent a week here two years ago doing a little beach-bumming and golfing in the north myrtle beach/calabash nc area and really enjoyed it. Although we drove to Myrtle Beach to do the tourist stuff, we really could have stayed at ocean isle beach all week. (Ok, except for golfing!) Not much on the island, but that was the charm of the place. There are a few restaurants on the island and across the causeway on the mainland, or maybe 15-20 minutes to the calabash seafood restaurants. There are a few other tourist shops on the island and a go-cart track right over the causeway on the mainland, but really not a lot more there. But again, thats what we were looking for, and for us, we really found what we were looking for.
Geographically, you are 30-60 minutes from most of the Myrtle Beach attractions, less than 60 minutes to the USS North Carolina Battleship up in Wilmington, NC, and around 7 to 71/2 hours from DC.
