United Airlines: Wear headphones or get booted off

Too many institutions/companies completely relying on people to be considerate and self-aware. It's a sad state of affairs when companies have to police behavior that should be considered normal etiquette. No one knows how to behave in public anymore.
Add in many institutions/companies don't want to upset customers, even when they're (the company) is in the "right".

That too. I just think it's a shame that an airline has to even enforce something like being noisy and inconsiderate. At a bare minimum, adults who are competent enough to get themselves and their families on a plane, should completely know that listening to music, conversations, streaming shows using a speaker is just wrong in every way.

Some people just don't care, have a sense of entitlement (I paid my money I'll do what I want) and some lack awareness (I didn't think it was THAT loud).

I'm happy about this and hope other airlines follow suit. I recently sat next to a guy while on a 2 hour flight who was incapable of turning off his volume. For two hours we listened to the slotmachine sound with each text message received as well as each reel/commercial/etc he watched. Myself and the couple seated behind him kept asking hm to turn it off. Either not having headphones or not knowing how to adjusts the speaker volume is no excuse for courtesy to others.

When our kids were little we had them use headphones. So I hope it applies to kids too. It's courtesy to others. Your snowflake can use them or lose the device.

People listening to loud music/games/iPad prattle and whatnot without headphones is one of my biggest pet peeves. Like it seriously boggles my mind that there are people who are so completely oblivious to those around them that they think this is acceptable. Another thing I've noticed becoming more prominent is people shopping in stores who walk around with their phone blasting their music like they're just at home doing housework or something. I've even seen someone with a legit SPEAKER in their shopping cart. I honestly don't know what goes on in people's brains where they can't seem to understand that just because THEY want to listen to something doesn't mean everybody else around them does.

There will always be people who respond - Show me where it says we can’t do this!

Now there is something for other passengers to show them. I’m sure the cabin crews were tired of having to be the bad guy or stuck in the middle, while not having anything to actually enforce. At least now they do.

It matters if the parents don’t understand gestures you are making and don’t understand the language you speak.
No that doesn't matter in the least. Someone having any sound on is the issue irrespective of the language. And it's also a weird assumption that it's someone who would 1) not speak the language you speak (meaning English because that's what they were meaning it wasn't in English) as if someone watching something in a language not in English means something 2) that they wouldn't understand what you, as the guest, is trying to convey. And the response from the poster was not at all along the lines of what you're getting at. All both of the responses (from the prior poster and from you) point to a subtext of stereotype and/or prejudice. Probably best to not dig the hole any deeper here.

Having it in the contract of carriage is really the important thing. Many of us don't actually read the full contract or carriage so I would still imagine passengers claiming they have no clue because they never thought to check that but it does make it big for any passenger complaints or actions the airline takes against a passenger. The CoC tends to hold up a lot better in court and whatnot.

Nothing to enforce? They've had the federal law requiring passengers to obey any lawful instructions from the flight attendants for a while now. That comes with fines and/or prison time, not just being banned from an individual airline.

I really hate this riding on the DC Metro. Especially when it is not in English. No issues with other languages, but it is just more irritating when you cannot understand it and it is being blasted at high volume.
"Hey, that sounds i teresting, can you translate for me? " 🤣

I wouldnt have the guts. I just wish I did.

I am not digging any deeper hole. I think you are missing the point. As you like to do in many posts, you try to take comments from others, like you did with the poster I was referencing, to be something that they are not. It is like you are intentionally trying to bait people. I won’t reply to the reply I am Sure you will make as you always do. Not worth my effort to get into a match. I hope you enjoy your weekend.

Putting on your headphones is not a lawful instruction.

Common sense yes being polite yes but actually being something that’s a law no

Is there something about "not being a disturbance to others"?

They can deny boarding if you APPEAR to be intoxicated (which is not illegal).
They can deny boarding if because of your clothing (which is not illegal).

IMO, this is United telling FAs and pilot's they will have their back in this situation.

Not a big user of the ignore button but sometimes it can preserve your sanity.
