On another thread, I commented on how the sensory 4D effects in SGE were not used very well or very often. That got me to thinking. It seems like 4D may becoming to an end in terms of value.
A few weeks ago, I experienced 3 new 4D attractions: Philharmagic (exceptional), Shrek 4d (very good) and Stiches Great Escape (mediocore at best). I noticed in each one a set a common reaction. Each time a sensory element came, I got a been there, done that sort of feeling. When they sprayed me with water (and every 4D attraction sprays you with water), my response was "I knew they were going to do that". Must every attraction spray you with water. I'm beginning to expect a squirt of water when I board the monorail.
Its seems like the 4D attractions that do succeed, do so bcause of storylines and really great 3D films Philharmagic's computer generated, ultra wide screen 3D film is so beautiful and funny that it doesn't need the 4d effects. Shreks film, while less well done, tells a very entertaining story. It doesn't need the effects either (so I will admit that the moving seats are a nice touch).
Think about the shows that started it all, Muppetvision 3D and Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Muppetvision is still OK (but only OK) due to its entertaining writing and the Muppet characters, but it has become a bit boring as its technology because more and more familiar. HISTA is really suffering. It has some of the best effects out there, but they too are becoming more and more familiar and the story isnt good enogh to take up the slack. On our last 2 visits, we didn't even bother with HISTA, and Muppet Vision is off our list for future visits.
I still enjoy its Tough to Be a Bug, but mostly becuase of the wonderful animatronic hopper and the spray can scene. This attraction to is also beginning to suffer from the familiarity of the 4D experiece. The problem is that most attractions use the same 4D effects that stopped being new and different a long time ago. And lets face. the only real value of 4D effects is novelty. I someone could really use them to make you feel part of the story, then they would have value, but right now they mostly function as a little suprise, and how many times can you be suprised? Unless some new, creative 4D effects can be created, I don't see a future in 4D attactions 5 years from now.
