Has anyone ever sold their points at one resort and bought at another?

This question may be completely off the wall; but every since we bought our VWL points I've had a nagging idea that I really wish we had bought at HHI thru the resell market instead. The thing is I love WDW, but my DW isn't the big Disney fan I am. She likes it okay, but I can see that at best I will only get her there every 2-3 years. On the other hand she loves the beach and we both love the HHI resort. I'm also a big golfer. I could see us staying at HHI alot more than we stay at WDW resorts and would really like to have the 11 month booking window. So now to my question - has anyone ever sold their existing points at one resort and then purchased points at another? If so, how much of a loss did you incur? Finally, and here is a novel idea - is it possible to trade (like permanently) ownership from one resort to another; ie - if there were a HHI owner that really wished they had bought at VWL, could we just trade our ownership somehow?

Although we haven't done it yet, we're going to in a few years. We're only waiting because we have a loan on the points we bought (also at VWL) and just want to pay it off first. But I've looked into it, and unfortunately, there's virtually no way just to do a straight up trade. After our first visit, when we stayed one night at OKW, DH fell in love with the place. They always say, "Buy where you want to stay", so we will. BTW, DH is also a golfer, so I can understand your love for HH. DH calls it "WDW for golfers". And if you haven't stayed at OKW, you should try it-those golf course views are part of what DH loves.

Haven't done but:

1. Sale/purchase price is one area of potential loss. Both transactions, your sale and then purchase are real estate transactions reguiring new deeds and filings and thus you face closing costs (including any transfer taxes, filing fees and new title insurance) related to each transaction (possibly $300 to $500 for each although you may get your buyer to pay most of the first sale transaction).

2. You cannot simply trade contracts -- if you agreed to trade, the exhanges would require a real estate closing and thus closing costs. Also, if there is any loan attached to your or the other trader's property it will have to be paid off in full at closing.

We wanted to when we bought our VWL contract but after realizing we can stay anywhere we figured we'd leave well enough alone!

Good Luck

I've been considering doing just the opposite, I own at HH and wish I had bought VWL. I love WL and would like the 11 month window. At this time I have no plans on visiting HH!

How many VWL points do you have to trade? because I would be willing to trade my HH points for some of your VWL points.

I own at OKW, and would swap w/ anyone who has VWL, or BWV's, or BCV's.

I have teen age kids, and they like the action at the other Villa's.

pirate: Well, if you had an investment bank involved, you would be writing a swap contract; like if you had a regular flow of income in Euros but you live in the States, the investment bank simply finds someone for the other end of the transaction (Dollar income but lives in Europe), writes up a contract and facilitates the net difference, cutting out currency risk for both sides (and takes a nice fee, of course).

Unfortunately, there is no such intermediary dealing in DVC points, and I suspect it would be far too difficult a contract. I suspect that if you could and perhaps should do a sell/ buy deal, and probably come out ahead, points-wise, as HHI points seem to be reselling for much less than a high-demand resort like VWL. It would likely cover your transaction costs. It might cost a bit more to go thru one of the timeshare brokers, but it is likely worth it bcs of the large inventory og HHI contracts to choose from.::yes::

Good Luck!

Not technically a "trade", but couldn't the contracts be drawn up for identical purchase/sale amounts, thus making the cash transaction a wash?
Of course, closing costs would have to be paid separately.

Good luck!...

Or, maybe just pair up with someone and "swap points" on a regular basis?

WolfpackFan, yes this "swap" can be done, but it is essentially 2 separate real estate transactions: you "sell" your VWL to the other person, and then they "sell" their HHI to you. but the "payment" is essentially that they pay you their HHI for your VWL, and vice versa. you'll still need to do 2 ROFR's and 2 Deed recordings.

i have heard of one person (Dean) on this board that attempted to do the above. i'm not sure if the transaction made it past ROFR or not, but it fell through at some point, so it was never completed.

i personally just completed the buy/sell "changing home resorts" myself a few months ago (we bought in at OKW, decided we wanted BWV instead). i was lucky enough to break even. basically, we bought OKW, then we bought BWV, then we used half the OKW points for our own vacations, rented the other half of OKW points out, and finally sold OKW. it was a big pain and hassle, but we made a huge mistake when we bought sight unseen, and just assumed that we would love OKW w/o actually ever visiting there or staying there. we weren't willing to hold onto OKW to give it a try... just hoping that the 7mo window would be doable, so we decided to do the swap and "change home resorts" ASAP while the resale market still seemed pretty good (you never know what will happen in the future).

the thing is, with your situation, IMO the same number of VWL points is worth more than the same number of HHI points. also, do you really want to get rid of your on-site DVC resort in exchange for an off-site one?

either way (swap with someone, OR you buy/sell yourself) it will be a big hassle, and if you're not careful or the resale market is not so good, you'll incur a loss.

It seems to me there IS another option but involves a great deal of trust on the part of both parties.

You could each add the party you are swapping with to your deed. Then each file a quit claim to the old deed. I think both deeds would have to be free and clear to do it.

Someone once asked me about exchaning my VWL for another contract that actually had more points. But since I can barely use what I've got more points wouldn't have helped. Plus I like VWL.
