Nope. They don't have parking lots. No one has ever driven.;)

Seriously though.....it completely depends on where you live, how you travel, how comfortable your car is, if you like to ride. Lots of people have driven with lots of various results, I'm sure.

That is the only way we go, I won't fly. We live about 6-7 hours away, depending on how many times we stop. I have looked into flying, but driving is still cheaper. It costs about $100 or less round trip and we van take as mush stuff as we want and I don't pack lightly, especially in December

Most of the time we just park at the resort and use Disney buses, unless we have a ressie at one of the other resorts before park opening.

We drove down from Pgh a few years ago. The kids were probably about 2 & 7. We drove straight thru and only stopped around Jacksonville because of bad weather.

I would do it again. But some people are born drivers - I could drive for days.

I have driven there once, and unless I have all the time in the world, I will never do it again!! :rotfl:

It was awful! I didn't even have kids then so I can't imagine it with kids. I like road trips, but it was just too long. And took up too much time!

we are coming from New York.. My husband wants to drive straight through.

We;ve been to Disney four times (this December will make 5) and we've driven every single time. We live in Charlotte NC, so it's only about 8-9 hours. We don't have small children (just me-24 and my mom) so that helps a great deal. We also stop along the way to make the driving more tolerable. But being that we're on our way to Disney, it's not too bad to start with :thumbsup2 We always stop at the first 7-11 we see (I looooove me some Slurpees...an Icee just won't do it for me!) and then again usually in St. Augustine.

Keep in mind, we're also a road-trip-kinda family, and not everyone is. For us, its all part of the trip.

I hope you enjoy YOUR trip! :goodvibes

We are coming from Indiana in December. We are going to try to drive it straight through. We live 18 hours away. We'll see how it goes. ;)

When we priced out driving from WI (a good 23-24 hours ie: 2 day drive each way) it came out to about the same for flying vs. driving, with the hotel rooms, gas, tolls, food, wear on your car (50 cents a mile), etc

You have to remember that your time is worth something, too. And we don't have an extra 4 days of vacation to spend driving.

If you are in the New Yorki City area look into the AutoTrain.

You would leave home in the morning and have to arrive at Lorton, VA (two exits South of the Capital Beltway) by not much later than 2:30 pm (they accept arrivals up to 3:00 only). By 9:30 the next morning (and 855 miles later) you and your car are at Sanford, FL, about an hour's drive to WDW.

Same timetable on the way home.

nd you can pack your car to the gills; just be aware that anything in the car cannot be retrieved from the time you drop off the car until it is off the train.

We have both driven and flown. We are only about 9 hours away by car though so flying actually takes about the same time with all the rigamarole you have to go through nowadays. If I lived in NY I would probably fly though.

We do like the convenience of having a car though and being able to go off site or drive to parks and restaurants if we want. Plus when you drive you can take more stuff "just in case".

We have driven from Long Island beofre we moved to the Poconos and from here as well. We have a teen that has been going since he was little for the drive we all love it. However we normally stay down in Georgia so we don't waste a day of road hum in Disney! That way we are fully refreshed and recharged before going.

Take a peek on the trasportation board, there is a sticky thread strictly dedicated to "those folks driving" is the title of the thread. Here's the link to that thread...http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=394351

There you can get some get info. Also another help is using the website gas buddy, to get current pricing of the stations along the way.

Happy PLanning!

We live in Va and have driven down 3 times. (number 4 in Dec:woohoo:) It's not so bad driving there it's the drive home that kills us. There are 6 of us so i pack plenty of snacks, movies and each child has a mp3 player. We don't rush going either way and stop at almost every rest area.

I drove alone with my three kids (dd12, ds11 and ds5). We left RI about 3:00 a.m., on a Saturday and drove straight through to NJ. We stopped in Jersey for breakfast and got back on the road. From that point on I made sure to stop every 2 hours or so at a rest stop for the kids to stretch and let loose (about about 10-15 minutes per stop). We made it to Fayetville, NC by 2:30 p.m., which included a stop for lunch at 5 guys Burgers and Fries.

We then left NC about 6 a.m. the following morning, stopped at South of the Border (which was a ghost town) and made it to Orlando by 3:00 p.m. But again, we stopped numerous times, including a good half hour at the Florida Welcome Center.

Overall the experience wasn't bad, but it wasn't cheap either. We rented a car ($200 or so), the tolls in Delware/NY and PA (Maybe) were high, gas and overnight hotel each way (about $89 for a Super Motel 6). But it was an experience. I would consider it again, but the kiddos don't want to-although that might be due to meeting several State Troopers up close in personal in GA while mommy was getting a speeding ticket:scared1:

we are 19 hours from disney but are driving strait through 18 hours to titusville and then staying the night with my grandad and then heading to disney the next morning

we are coming from New York.. My husband wants to drive straight through.

We live in northern NJ (Bergen County, about 6 miles from the GWB). We have driven a few times, most recently was Feb (5th-13th). DH was always dead set against the drive because he thought it would just be too long and the kids wouldn't do well. He now says that driving is the only way to go and he will never pay to fly again! The kids usually do great with the drive (especially now that they are older) and i think driving is part of the fun.

We have driven straight through and stopped over, honestly I prefer straight through with a majority of the driving done during the night. Driving during the night really cuts down on the "are we there yet?" from the kids and it just makes the trip more relaxing.

What works for us is leaving around dinner time/ early evening. DH usually works that day so he starts off the drive and drives until he gets tired, around midnight or so. I try to sleep as much as possible during the day that we leave so I am well rested and ready to take over when DH gets tired. The kids don't like to wear their pj's in the car because they don't like anyone seeing them like that when we make bathroom breaks etc. They usually wear comfy clothes like sweats and t-shirts. We always have a cooler packed with drinks and we make sure to pack snacks (goldfish, granola bars, cookies, chips, fruit, mini cereal boxes, etc.). A portable DVD player is a life saver! We also have some travel games, magazines (i can read in the car DD13 can't it makes her nauseous), and i-pods are great too so there is no fight over the radio stations, oh and their nintendo DS's. When DH decides he is tired we usually stop for gas and a bathroom break, then I take over. DH pops in the earplugs and I pop in my i-pod (only 1 earbud so i can hear emergency vehicles etc.). I make sure my i-pod is loaded with some of my favorite up beat tunes. Everyone sleeps while I drive (I am more of a night person so it doesn't bother me at all). By the time the kids wake up we are ready to stop for breakfast. Earplugs are wonderful for the passenger especially when the passenger is trying to nap while the kids are awake.
Just remember that if you are tired PULL OVER AND REST, we have done this a couple of times if necessary, even if it was just for an hour or two. Many, many people pull over to nap at the rest areas, we have never had a problem.

One thing we did when the kids were younger was try to stop for meals at fast food places that have a "playplace" so that the kids could burn off a little energy for about 20-30minutes after they ate. We also bring a football or frisbee to toss around for a few minutes when we stop at rest areas for bathroom breaks. i know it doesn't sound like much but, 15 minutes out of the car running around does a world of good for everyone. Good Luck!!

** A great book to get is called "Drive I-95", it's and exit by exit guide that lets you know basically what is at each exit (restaurants, hotels, gas, etc.) on the way down 95. We bought it in Barnes & Noble a few years ago and have used it ever since. I know some people say that some of the places at the exits are closed due to the economy but, we always try to pick exits that list a variety of things so we have never had an issue.

** Just in case you were wondering about cost. On our last trip in Feb. it cost us about $300-$350 round trip for gas and tolls(we also did a little driving around the orlando area). We drive a minivan (at the time it was only 6 months old). Gas is cheaper now, I think it was almost $3.00 a gal. when we went, maybe a little less.

My husband and I are driving down in October . . . . And I was ,wondering if anyone ever drove what they thought about it?

Been there, done that, bought the shirt. :sad2: Each trip kept getting longer and longer. It was eating up the time we could spend with the Mouse. Unless the cost of airfare gets to the point I can't come up with the money I don't see us driving again. Fortunately DH agrees. He has no desire to drive either.

We drive every year, but it only takes us 10 hours. It is straight interstate and very easy.

Now we also drive to upstate New York almost every year. When the kids were little we did it in 2.5 days, now we do it in two. Even with the stop over night it is still much cheaper to drive then airfare for four.

Straight through? You will be very tired when you get there. I vote for stopping over night.
