I traded out two years of points so we can stay in the Grand Floridian Royal Palms Club Concierge for my daughters 13th b'day. We are going in February and I was really concerned about a last minute cancellation due to bad weather. I was told not to worry I can get insurance through DVC for my points. When I called to find out all the information , I was told I would get back $5.00 per point, if I cancel in the last five days for a total of $2,900.00 Everyone knows I could never rebook this same trip for 8 days and 7nights for that amount of money anywhere in Disney let alone at the Grand Floridian. I don't understand how they can get away with doing that. I feel like I am being so taken advantage of, and now have to worry and pray for everything to be ok so that we hopefully do not have to cancell. Instead of being excited from now until our trip. I am going to be worried the whole time knowing I will never get back what I am losing if for some reason we are unable to go.

Yes, the insurance is awful - it really only pays us back what we pay for our annual dues per point.

We rarely take out the insurance . . . except for larger uses of our points, like the DCL. For our regular DVC stays, and our DL hotel stays, which are usually 7 nights, we don't bother with this silly insurance.

You can always call an insurance agent for independent coverage. Lloyds will issue a policy!

What happens if you have to cancel later--like day of arrival?

I was looking to get insurance for my trip in Sept, because I thought it would be extra protection above the holding account policy. But if it worthless if you don't cancel ahead of time (and, really, if you were able to give notice to airlines or resorts, would insurance even be necessary?), then I don't see the point. Hmm, very frustrating. I'm not even sure if other companies would offer protection on a DVC vacation, since I'm not sure how they would calculate trip cost from points.

Is that something you have done for yourself? How do I go about doing it? Do you have a phone number? Do you know how much it would cost?

I haven't called the number yet, but I was planning on calling the info the DVC sent with my ressie confirmation. I was going to wait until 32 days before my trip (the sheet said you had to purchase at least 31 days out--before the holding account policy goes into effect). However, if it is true that I can't get coverage for all the days of my trip, even if I were to cancel day of or during, then I don't plan on wasting my time or money. I, too, spent all of this year's points and most of next's so I could stay at the GF (though not club level--you are so lucky!). While I've never had insurance for any of my trips before and nothing has happened, I am a worrier and would rather not take any chances, now that I'm a DVC member and don't want to lose all those points :scared1: . If you find any more info, let us know!

So far not yet- but since I used points for my cruise I will purchase insurance for that trip. ;)

The weather in Florida is usually really nice in February. It's hurricane season (June 1-Nov 30) that one really has to worry about weather. Just my 2 cents.
