Hands up on ToT?

My hands usually go up on this ride. I ride the rides for the experience of riding the ride. If a picture is important to someone, perhaps they could request to ride up front.

:thumbsup2 The ride to me is for the thrill experience, not the photo...yeah, I'd ask for a back row for courtesy to others, but I'd say probably 80% look at the photo, but rarely buy it. If you're a die-hard about photos taken during rides, then I'd say request a front seat.

My general opinion is that I don't like my view blocked by other guests.

(And, it can ruin an otherwise good "ride photo," for sure.)

That said, my opinion has no bearing on what other guests will do.

I have to agree. I don't worry about ride photo's, have never bought one of them anyway, but, honestly, I don't understand why it is done. What is achieved by putting your arms up on any ride.

I know that it must be just me because so many people do it. Is it a badge of courage? Can someone explain why? If it is a sign of courage, it's not a huge accomplishment when 3 years old are doing it...my how brave of grownups to do it. :scratchin

No one will ever have to worry about my arms blocking the picture.:wave2:

People put their arms up because it allows you to lift off your seat. It's that extra thrill. So, on ToT it's a PRIME moment to do it.

Just for the extra little "Thrill" :goodvibes Though I'd NEVER do it on Space Mountain...I think it'd take an arm off!

Another fun way to get a thrill, rather that putting your hands up, hold hands with the people next to you all across the row. I enjoy feeling how hard my friend or family member squeezes because that is harder for them to control. If they squeeze the heck out of your hand and then try to insist that they weren't scared, you can show them the claw marks that they left. ;)
:thumbsup2

Yes that is what it is

OK! And why is that a thrill again. I can lift off my seat at anytime even when it is not moving just by flexing my legs. Is airtime that thrilling?

Guess you've never put your arms up going down a roller coaster hill? Its a different feeling. Air time is awesome. Has nothing to do with people thinking its an accomplishment or whatever like you said before.

I can't speak for everyone who does it, but I do it because to me it enhances the feeling of free falling. Maybe you lift a little higher out of the seat or harder against the restraints. Perhaps it is psychologocal and just makes it seem that way.

I can assure you I don't feel the need to raise my arms up to show courage. As you state, three year olds can do it. Although the same thing could be said of being condescending on the internet while tucked safely in your home behind your anonymous screen name. I guess that isn't really fair though, as most 3 year olds cant spell or type correctly, so I guess in this case we would have to change it to the courage of a 6 year old.

Sorry!!!!
But I love the feeling of putting my hands up! I guess I never gave it a thought about the pictures...

I've never thought about that when we rode that ride......or any ride for that matter. We rode for the first time on our last trip in '10 and DD was almost 5. She LOVED this ride so much that we rode three times (DH, DD and myself) and then I just couldn't do it anymore. LOL It caused major anxiety as the ride terrified me! :rotfl: But DD could not get enough!!!! The third time we rode, we did purchase the picture because she was smiling SO big, with her hands up.....and I was, well, holding on for dear life!!!!! It was a great picture of DD!!!! But of all the rides we rode and viewed pictures of, I never, ever noticed someone's arms being up being a problem.

The people that I know who like to put their hands up do it because it keeps them from holding on. That way they fetch up against the restraints, giving more of a feeling of "danger". It's purely for adrenaline, because it doesn't actually change a thing about the physics of the ride or of your body on the ride.

And, putting hands up shows that they're not afraid to let go. Very important to the coaster aficionado. (Yes, I checked that spelling.) So yeah, it's at least part bravado.

My advice if you can't get the back row. DO NOT put your hands up only if you noticed some terrified people in your car, or first timers. They make for the BEST pictures!:crazy2::scared1:

I put my hands up because it's fun. I also smile and even say "wheeee". Oddball that I am, I plan to do so in the future as well.

I'm too busy trying not to grab the person next to me plus my eyes are closed so you wouldn't bother me. I have trouble with falling rides.

I agree that for normal people riding in the back would probably be best.

I'm with those that say hands up is fine. It's a ride! It's not a photo session. Yes they take a photo but I'm doing what I want to make the ride the most fun for me. If you really want a good picture of you, then you wait for the next car and ask to be seated in front. Rather than finding it bad etiquette for people in front to raise their hands, I think it's bad etiquette for those in back to expect others to keep hands down so they can get a picture.

When dealing with rides like roller coasters and free falls, air time is what many want to feel and hands up is part of that.

It's primarily a thrill ride, not a photo op, so feel free to put your hands up. If someone expects you not to, then they're the one's who are being rude.

If someone is really concerned about being blocked in the picture they should request the front row.

I agree! My whole gang love to put their hands up - must annoy a lot of people:scared1:

Yikes - you know, I've put my hands up on TOT and not even thought about ruining someone's pic! I hope I didn't!!

Wow...just wow. I can't believe that some are questioning others motives for putting their hands up...who cares what the reason is. IF you choose not to, fine. But don't cast aspersions on those who like to raise their arms/hands.
In all reality, you aren't getting more 'airtime' if your arms are raised. You get the exact same feeling if you just cross your arms over your chest!!!
I know that I have stuck my arms way up high, for the entire ride. And when I got off and saw the end result, in the photo?? I was horrified to see that I had completely blocked the young child behind me...and her family probably would have loved to have had that photo, but due to my outstretched arms, they didn't get to have a photo of their child's first ToT experience.
So now??? I either just cross my arms across my chest or I raise my arms only to shoulder height...doesn't impact anyone behind me.
