Handicap Accesible Room Issues

I have read a number of posts where people specifically request to not have a handicap accessible room. What are the issues with these rooms. Thanks

It kind of depends on the resort, but the biggest problems seem to be the roll in shower and lack of a tub in the studio. I believe some also have lower counters in the kitchen and roll up counters. I have not stayed in a DVC HA, but we got a HA room at AKL, and the bathroom seemed a bit stark, but still had the nice fixtures etc.

What about a dedicated 2br? Is there at least one tub in one of the bedrooms? I have 3 little ones and need that tub. I guess I'd just double check when we arrive.

We've stayed in HC studios at OKW. The main difference in a studio is indeed a roll-in shower instead ofa tub/shower combo and a lack of under counter storage. Probably not a problem for adults, but those with kids would probably like the bathtub.

One bedroom and larger units should still have the jacuzzi tub, but the stall shower is replaced with a roll-in.

We had a HA studio at VWL once. Besides the no tub, no counter around bathroom sink (thus, no place to put toiletries). The bathroom was one large room-no separate vanity area. No closet-the only closet area was in the amoire for the TV, on the 2 sides-so there was very limited closet area. Microwave was on the counter in kitchenette, no shelf, leaving very little counter area. And the biggest pain of all was that there was no way to turn off the light over the bed without getting out of bed again, so you couldn't read in bed and then just turn out the light when you were tired. We never did figure out what this had to do with HA, maybe just a quirk in our room.
When we were at HH, they offered us a HA 1 BR at check-in, assuring us that we'd still get the jacuzzi tub. However, after being so unhappy at VWL, we didn't chance it.

I guess I am specifically interested in the 1BR and 2 BR at BWV, where we bought in this year. We have a 6 yr old DS in a wheelchair, so we frequently find the extra rolling room comes in handy, but all 4 of us (incl 4 yr old DD) really like having a bathtub (esp nice deep ones with jacuzzi jets), plus DS is still easy enough at 45 lbs to lift in to join a grown-up.

Can any of you fill me in pls? Thx

As Chuck said, the 1 and 2 bedroom HA units do have the jacuzzi tub in the master bedroom and a rollin shower rather than a shower stall.

The rooms at OKW would provide more space BTW. Our DD is in a chair and so far we've only been at BCV when she has been along, but it's kind of a tight fit.

The 2 BR HC villas at OKW all have the roll in shower in the 2nd BR. Bldgs under 30 do not have the low counters in the kitchen or a microwave on the counter. Over 30 they have a side by side fridge with water-ice in the door, but low counters, with micro on the counter and no disposal.
OKW is the most friendly with a chair or ECV. But your 6 years old with a smaller chair should be OK and with the 1 BR and up you will have the jacuzzi tub.

We had a HA studio at VWL last December. It was the only studio available when we checked in. They offered to let us move the next day, but would have to pay $25 housekeeping fee to clean the room we stayed in that night. We decided to keep the room and not move. We don't like the hassle of moving and didn't want to pay the $25.

I've resigned myself to the fact that there are a number of HA rooms at the resorts, and that there's a chance non-handicapped people will get the rooms if regular rooms aren't available. I sucked it up and took my turn and, although I'd rather not stay in one, I know it's likely I will have to stay in one again. Let's fact it, everyone can't get all their preferences every time. I know I will get great view rooms sometimes, road or dumpster rooms sometimes, and occasionally a HA room. It's just the law of averages. Just remember that the room is not the only component of your WDW trip. It won't make or break your trip. After all, you're in Disney World!!

At BWV, HA 1-br and 2-br units do have the jacuzzi. There is also counter space at the Master Br sink near the tub. The sink in the 'shower' part of that bathroom doesn't have counter space, but then again there isn't any counter space for that sink in a 'regular' unit either.

BTW, if the 1-br is HA, the connecting studio is also HA. All HA units at BWV are preferred view.

The kitchens are a little larger to allow for a chair to turn around, but this does make the living room part a little smaller.

We really prefer the shower of a HA 1-br to the 'regular' unit type.

I could imagine that being in a HA studio would only be a problem for those with small children who only take baths.

We have experience with both types of units as we have HA units when DB is with us. When we are on our own, we take what they give us.
