Halle Berry

I think you're directing blame in the wrong direction: It is the people who care about celebrities' private lives that are the underlying fuel for the fire.

I think it's the media who are doing that.

Not always. I am white and my DH is mixed, but considers himself black. When both of our children were born, the race checked was white. Maybe they go by what the child looks like? Or maybe what race the mother is? My children are very light, especially my son. I don't think the average person would think they were black or maybe even mixed.

It's according to appearance unfortunately.

Sorry, I meant people here seem shock and shaken that Halle and the President classify themselves as Black and not biracial. They are using the classifications that have been imposed on light skinned blacks and biracial people for the last couple of centuries.

Visually, I see both of them as being black.

Exactly. and that's all Halle meant when she discussed the race of herself and Nahla. If someone is visually black, society will view and treat them as they appear.

Because in the real world we most definitely do classify people by race.
And those "old rules" that were put in place, are more often than not still in place.

And I don't understand continuing to embrace it.

Seriously, what difference does it make what race this child is?

I'll echo a pp and say that I don't think anyone is shocked or shaken. I read a lot of who cares and I don't get it. No OMGS!!

but this is an issue close to my heart. My daughter is bi-racial. America will see her as a black female. We are raising her to embrace all blood running through her veins. AMERICA is not going to see that. Obama is NOT the first black president and it really pisses me off that people call him that and that he would even say it. He had the chance to be something bigger than that and yet he did what America does to all bi-racial children: CHOOSE ONE.

When the one drop rule was placed Hallie and others would also be working in the plantation home vs. outside. Which is why there is the multitude of colors in the African American community. House vs Field mentality is still going on.

No, not cool you don't have to choose one! How can you when you are both! To place that idea of choosing one or that because you have a drop of black blood you are black is complete non-sense. Both communities need to grow up and move on.

Nahla looks like a mixed child to me and so does Hallie and Barack. Biracial/ Mult-raced people need to make a solid stand and it starts with the parents in my eyes at a young age instilling the idea that there is no choice to make because they are all.

It shouldn't make a difference, but I think from what I was reading in the articles in the link, it sounded like Halle was taking the father to court for a custody hearing, and brought up that the father had called Halle the N-word and other nasty names, and trying to make it sound like he is a racist. Maybe she was in hopes that she would make him look like an unfit parent, and that the court would award her custody of the little girl.

I could be wrong, but that's what I got out of the articles.

To some it really doesn't matter what the race of any individual is, but to many it matters greatly. Just because there are laws in place that makes it illegal to discriminate against a person because of race doesn't mean that racism no longer exists.

Like you, I don't feel race should matter at all, but i'm a realist who believe that "you can't legislate morality" (Jesse Ventura).

That is what I got out of the article too. I didn't post it to start a debate, I posted it more to discuss how she seems to be dragging her daughters father through the mud with this whole custody thing. I guess maybe I posted the wrong article as an example of what is going on, it was just the most recent one that come out today.

I think it's the media who are doing that.
They're surely exploiting the nature of their readers, but in the end it is still the readers who fuel the fire. They can't fall back on "the media made me read it".

If he refers to himself as black, then isn't that how everyone is going to see him and refer to him? White America didn't do that to him, he did. Would you agree?

On Ellen a few weeks back Halle commented that she doesn't like that her daughter speaks french with her father. Rather than try to learn some french, she said she puts a stop to it because she felt left out. She came across as being childish and resentful of Nahla's relationship with her father.

Obviously, no, we can't say the media made me read it, but if the media didn't provide the information, then we wouldn't be reading it, and the reason they provide it is for the $.

That's very selfish of her. :headache:

I believe that he said on Oprah that said that he refers to himself as black because that's how people see/acknowledged him. Funny though he grew up with a white mother.

The entire Hallie situation is ridiculous she is a poisonous woman and you can now see that she must be miserable to be with. Dave Justice left her. Al B Sure left her. Eric Bennett left her. Two of them were driven to physical violence with her. She is losing credibility in my eyes. She didn't deserve that Oscar...yes I don't like her.

You hit the nail on the head "American sees her as black" as it does most biracial and multi racial children who have a darker skintone. It doesn't make it right, but it is what it is.

I'm shocked that Barack choosing to identify as black pisses you off as you're not now nor will you ever have to walk a mile in Barack's or another bi-racial/multi-racial persons shoes.

As far as you being able to identify that Barack and Halle or bi-racial, really? You do know that black people who have 2 black parents can look like Halle and Barack, right? and bigger than what? A black man...seriously?!

Understandably, this is an issue that is close to your heart, but saying your daughter has the right to choose to be acknowledged as bi-racial, but the other doesn't have the right to choose either or as a bit contradictory.

The bottom line is that until laws are changed, the old laws still apply and many choose to identify under the current current law.

I agree. She could have used it as an opportunity to learn something new. The fact that her daughter will speak two languages is to her (the daughter's) advantage.

As they should. Their responsibility is to make the most money for their owners.

If we really want to assert a qualitative shift in what we, as a society, focus on, think about, etc., that has to be a change in people.

BACK THE TRUCK UP! (((beep beep beep)))

A woman NEVER deserves to be abused.

Nooooo. I wouldn't have guessed that.
