Half Marathon - Train with me for Jan '11 - ...Shock - an update! 4/06! new pix

I did it! 3 miles is done! :)

Woo Hoo!

I was getting a little let down on myself...so I am glad I am still here and plugging away!

Slow and steady wins the race!

:cheer2: Maroo :cheer2:

That's the spirit - whatever it takes to keep us moving!! I wish at the gym I go to I could watch tv!! They have TV's but no sound!! That drives me crazy - I'd love to use the treadmill while watching the Biggest Loser!! I do lift the 5# weights, go thru my routine...

5K blech - I wouldnt if I were you! You'd run 3 miles the day before your 13.1 miles!!

Half from what I understand your fundraising efforts get you a room - and acess to a training schedule - support... you've done the walks on weekends- talk to someone there - you're a people person!!

The Half they assign you a number on a "bib" You will (the night before) attatch the bib to your clothes/shirt... then at 4 am you will get outside and find the bus to take you to the start of the race... the bus stops and just follow the masses of people walking (I think its 16,000 people, so no, you wont miss where to go - promise!!)... You will enter a big area - you should have a bag with comfy crocs and a wash cloth - and anything you want to "check" You'll find the tent and check it! You will be advised to bring a towel (pool towel form resort! shhh) to sit on , and some "throw away clothes" - I go to Goodwill and buy a sweatshirt for $1!! Depending on the weather - you may want to invest in some $1 stretchy gloves (Walgreens and all the stores carry them!) and some throwaway pants...

Then you will enter the "runners" area - you have to have the bib on to enter here - here is where you will find porta potties with no line (everyone else will be in that entry area standing in line, then come thru adn say WTH??) Then you will look for the BRIGHT YELLOW WISH shirts - that's where you'll find ME!! :cool1:

Then around 6am - I'll want to drift over to the lines/corrals - lf you note on the bib it will tell you where your corral is - keep your towel with you to sit on!!! :goodvibes Now there again will be MASSES of people - We with the time of 16 min miles will be in the back - but you want to be in the front row of the back line!! (this gives you at least a 20 min cushion in terms on NOT BEING SWEPT!!)

Then Lights Camera fireworks - and stuff happens, but you're too far in back to know for sure - the "REAL" runners have taken off - slowly you move forward.... about an hour later (around 7am I think) you cross the start line - and off the masses are - at the first overpass you look you can see runners below!! WTH>!! You have a long way to go - you'll hear cowbells, feel the excitement, start to see the sun rise!!

Then finally head towards THE MAGIC KINGDOM!! Know the hard part here is going under the 7 Seas Lagoon, right before the Contemporary - that part of the road has a steep down, then a STEEP UP!! (this is why I recommend running some hill work after week 6 - 7!) Now people will be passing you - and you just smile and take in all the sounds - stop at every water stop and get a glass and walk slowly with it!! (If you squish in the sides it wont splash on you)

Now the sun is rising - If its hot, you can throw off your sweatshirt on the side of the road - IF it was hot before the start of the race - discard them then!! - this happens every year - the Disney Volunteers gather up these discards and donate them back to Goodwill the WISH people have said!!

Finally - your shot in the magic kingdom - One AWFUL AWFUL year (this is Half Marathon Lore that the WISH people experienced, and still talk about today!!) the volunteer/DIsney CM had too much power - he thought he was to close the gates 1 hour after race START time, not 1 hour after the last person crossed the Start line - HE CLOSED THE GATE 1/2 HOUR EARLY... imagine the tears of those denied - well within the 16min per mile pace... :sad1: This is the FIRST sweep point... or not .... because of this we hear now the first sweep point is outside of the MK - everyone on pace gets to come in!! :cool1:

Now you will read to be very careful running into this CM entrance as some people slip and fall here every year!! :wizard: You come thru into MK Mainstreet by the shops on the left - oh the people Screamin for you!! :cheer2: Now you run over to tomorrowland, see characters (dont waste time!!) run thru FAntasyland - THRU THE CASTLE - smile the photogs are there - run thru Adventureland (mile 6 maybe?) then out by a familiar Train Place - and back behind the scenes - where they store parade stuff!! Logs for Splash - then out of this CM Magic Kingdom Area....

And the fear begins to set in - you see the dreaded SWEEP Bicyclists... Run to The Grand Floridian - you will see WISH people Scream Teamin for you!! (there are also lots of Purple TnT people screamin for you too!! Promise!) Then that stupid Sweeper just doin his job tells you how much time to get to mile 10!! That's the BIG SWEEP POINT!! Hopefully you are well ahead of the Team in Training guy holding the 16mm sign!! (I was!! but was starting to hit 17 min miles!) Now you will pass a bus, and go up a highway clover leaf (and people in cars going on the other side honk and yell encouragment!) The bus you realize will be pulled across the road and if you are behind in that 16mm you will be asked to board the bus...

Now you begin the climb up the clover leaf (its hard running, sideways!!) You See Mile 11 - and think, I made it - only to have a dread Sweeper tell you how many minutes you have to get to the next sweep point!! WHAT :scared1: The WISH board said Mile 10 was the last sweep - now you see the TnT sign holder - now you are passed by more walkers..

You make it to Mile 11 and are told you have to make it to Mile 12 in 16 min - Dont stop KEEP MOVIN YOU CAN DO IT!! :cheer2: Mile 12 is just down the entrance to the EPCOT parking lot - YOU DID IT :dance3: More WISH Screamers!! Keep movin, 1 more mile to go - into Epcot!! The people cheerin you on will keep you motivated - you wont feel your feet, but your spirit will be soarin!! NO MORE SWEEPERS!!

So Maroo to answer your question - it depends - you will have a TnT person, coach - but you can run your race - but when you lose all hope - a TNT person will sidel up to you and walk your pace, and talk you thru those rough spots - its what they do - NO ONE gets left behind!! :goodvibes If you need someone on each side - they will find someone for each side - if you need them to hold your hand - they will!! :goodvibes By going TNT you wont be alone!! :goodvibes (I know I witnessed it!!) A lot of the purple TNT walk with the 16mm marker sign, and after rounding that 10 mile clover thing - they seemed in good spirits when they passed me (I certainly couldnt keep up with them!) At mile 11, I saw 1 of them holding and talking to another purple shirted person - it was a warm fuzzy moment!!

We have more than 90 days - so dont worry about it!!

maroo: :cool1: You are doing great! You will be fine for the 1/2 in January. Just keep going.

sandy: I will now dissect your great post in order to comment:

:cheer2: Maroo :cheer2:

That's the spirit - whatever it takes to keep us moving!! I wish at the gym I go to I could watch tv!! They have TV's but no sound!! That drives me crazy - I'd love to use the treadmill while watching the Biggest Loser!! I do lift the 5# weights, go thru my routine...

5K blech - I wouldnt if I were you! You'd run 3 miles the day before your 13.1 miles!!

Well, there are the people that run the Goofy - the 1/2 followed by the full. Then there are the people that run the "Dopey" - the 5k followed by the 1/2 followed by the full.... :faint:

Half from what I understand your fundraising efforts get you a room - and acess to a training schedule - support... you've done the walks on weekends- talk to someone there - you're a people person!!

:goodvibes

... or you could be a big wuss, like me, who doesn't want to stand in the cold and fight for a porta-potty, and fork over the money for the nice, warm, food bearing, character greeting, bathroomed race-retreat tent. :rolleyes1
(yeah, yeah, I know... I know... I should just suck it up and stand out in the cold and find a bush or something like everyone else - but the thought of half-way decent toilets did me in! I was weak!)

then come thru and say WTH??) Then you will look for the BRIGHT YELLOW WISH shirts - that's where you'll find ME!! :cool1:

Sandy, you have my permission to laugh at me as I fly by Water Station #2 during the full marathon, grab a glass of water and wind up with 1/2 of it in my face b/c I ain't stopping for water. I'll be running!

(If you squish in the sides it wont splash on you)

I read a full report about that! How awful! :sad2:

This is the FIRST sweep point... or not .... because of this we hear now the first sweep point is outside of the MK - everyone on pace gets to come in!! :cool1:

Now you will read to be very careful running into this CM entrance as some people slip and fall here every year!! :wizard:

Great tip! :thumbsup2

You come thru into MK Mainstreet by the shops on the left - oh the people Screamin for you!!

None of you will be swept. I repeat: None of you will be swept. How do I know? Because you are all properly training for this right now. Properly trained people are not swept. You will be fine!

I'm not quite certain what you mean by running "sideways" but I've learned how to properly run up inclines and it helps soooo much to do this: be certain to lean into the incline. During this past Saturday's 6 mile run; I was keeping my pace since I had distance to cover but there was this guy that I noticed toward the end of my run. For some reason, he seemed certain that he had to be in front of me. :confused3 I could hear him coming up behind me and it took him a couple of minutes before he could finally pass me - he was burning out because he was pushing himself too hard. I ignored him as he pulled along side of me and then he finally passed me. I wasn't racing - I maintained my consistent pace at all times since I had to finish out 6 miles. He pulls a little bit ahead of me but not too far ahead as he's pretty much out of energy at this point. We approach an incline. I lean forward as I run and pump my arms a little harder behind me and quickly ascend the incline. He's still standing straight and tall while huffing and puffing in his run up the incline. Without picking up my pace, I'm able to quickly pass him again on that incline as I was running it properly and he wasn't. He was so out of breath and I was fine. So, lean forward when you hit an incline and use your arm movement to help you move. You'll move up it quicker by doing that.

You See Mile 11 - and think, I made it - only to have a dread Sweeper

There will be no sweeper telling either one of you anything on January 9, 2010. Both of you will be leaving all sweepers in the dust!

tell you how many minutes you have to get to the next sweep point!!

There you will find me, toward the front of the park, yelling: Go Sandy! Go maroo! :cool1:

:goodvibes (I know I witnessed it!!) Sandy, thanks for the great post. Even though I'm running the full and you're describing the half, it's great information to know. Seriously, both of you guys will be properly trained and there will be no sweepers for either of you!

Oh, and 4 more days until you can book ADR's!!

Dolce :goodvibes You read my post!!

I should ask dh about some of the rundowns/lowdowns of the Full for you - I will later!! :lovestruc

The thing about those sweepers - its their job to bike back and forth and give you times - its my fear - well I know I'm not alone in this - but YOU have the RIGHT ATTITUDE!! :thumbsup2 (so even when you are not in danger of being swept - they are EVERYWHERE!!)

Those Goofy and Dopey people!! They even enjoy running! :faint:

Crocs :rotfl2: No, of course it doesnt have to be crocs - but it does have to be some kind of shoe that you can slip into (nikes? flip flops can be ok if you have a beloved pair - but it might be annoying to slip your toe in there) TAKE a pair of shoes - after your run, you want OUT of your running shoes!! :wizard:

Race Retreat Tent It didnt get good reviews on the WISH board!! No lines for porta potties inside the runner wait area before the race - during the race - I forgot to post - :lmao: I waited to Frontierland - and ran into the bathrooms there - a/c flush potties! :thumbsup2 (the mirrors there are a downer tho!! :rotfl2:)

Dulce I am SO NOT going to be laughing at you - YOU :worship: Seriously!! :goodvibes Mile 2 - and I hope to get to the MK before you! Listen for the cowbell coming out of the castle!! :goodvibes

Running "sideways" You know when you are driving on a "clover leaf" - how the expressway has a circle? You have to run on "that" circle - because it is going from one level to another it creates a tilt - and you run on a "tilt" so your feet feel like you are falling sideways -

BUT Your tip on running on incline :thumbsup2 and I'll add that you should shorten your stride and pick up your knees too!! :thumbsup2

Last miles whether full or half - one of my favorite helps - a nice cool wash cloth!! So I hope to see you in Epcot! Again, I'll be there with "bells" on (cow bells that is!!) :thumbsup2

You guys don't understand...

If I can't raise the money...then I can't do the half in January. I have now talked with my parents and a few trusted friends and 2 of my supporters and all of them... all 6 of the people I have talked to...have said that it is a very difficult time to raise money.

Raising $3600 would be difficult anyway...and I am starting late.

So far I have gotten one donation in addition to the donation I have made on my own and am not even remotely close.

If I can't raise the money - then I can't do the half, becasue there is no other way for me to register for is. Does that make sense?

At this point...I am not ready to quit. I have a few ideas that could bring some money in - selling candy at work and such. But I have a LONG way to go before I am able to really get there.

Does that clear things up at all? :upsidedow

ETA: I am NOT asking any of you guys to support me. In fact...don't at all at this point! I gotta decide if I am going to go that route. But I am following DISboard policy. I am not raising money on here.

Maroo :grouphug:

All I can think of is a Car Wash at Wal Mart! (Wal Mart will match your fundraising effort) Do you have a letter from Tnt? (one of those C3? that says the money you are raising is going to the non profit?)

Maybe sitting outside of a Post Office or Grocery Store collecting funds?

Have you set up a website for online donating? Knowing it goes to Tnt people have been more willing to help a cause they can get behind.... Again, I know if approved and you have a website the webmaster may allow you to have a clickable link in your signature... :confused3:
:grouphug:

First of all...I don't want to get banned from the DIS. So...I want to be clear that I am not soliciting funds from anyone here.

I wrote the webmaster 2 weeks ago to ask if I could put something in my siggie. I have sent 3 emails and have not received any response.

I was hoping...since I was holding out to actually participate in the DIS GKTW team that was being formed...and they told us to hold off registering until we got that team together...that they would allow those of us that had held out to sign up to at least put something in our siggies here.

But I have not heard anything from that.

I do have a website. I have sent emails to most in my address book. I have posted on Facebook. I am selling candy at work, which in only a few days has raised some money!

But the bulk of what I was counting on...just isn't there because of the economy. Even my family is encouraging me not to do it. And my friends here. Just not good timing.

So...I am not officially out of the half...but it is getting close to being official.

BUT...I have good news. Lisa (Lauren's Mom) has been inspired to train with me. And she wants to do a half. And I said something about the Princess Half...and she was ALL FOR IT!

This was several days ago...normally she changes her mind...but...

We have airline tickets!!!!!! And a Room Ressie!!! All Star Sports (since that is the official resort and where the Expo is!)

So...NO MATTER WHAT...I am continuing to train! Which is the most important thing to me...

So...now...should I make a weekend trip to Disney for Marathon Weekend?

IF I get to come...I will probably drive. Just to save money. And I could come and meet you guys and cheer you on?

I would have to drive up on Thursday night. And leave on Sunday by Noon at the latest. Is it worth it? Would I be able to make any meets? What do you guys think?

maroo- just curious: what happens to the money that you have already raised if you have to back out of doing the 1/2 marathon? If you do have to back out of actually running but you still have both time and money for that week-end - I say come! Do you really want to pass up a chance to miss a week-end at Disney??? You could still go over to Pop that Friday to meet-up with the WISH team and then we're still going to try to do that dinner at Cape May on Saturday night.

But, don’t back out yet! Maybe something will give and you’ll be able to raise the rest of the money that you need.

Any money raised...(which right now is just mine and one other person ) would stay at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society...which is GREAT. It is a great organization and they directly help my patients here at my office. :)

I hear ya! :) Maybe I should just plug along...it isn't going to hurt anything to plug along!

This is a very good point! :thumbsup2

ETA: Right now I am leaning toward pushing forward...continue to train for JAN - raise money - and just plan to drive down and even stay offsite if I end up not being able to raise enough to walk.

I would be able to see how the weekend sorta works for next year AND get more pumped for March! :)

Hi everyone
Sorry I haven't been on in a few days, we are still in NY.

Maroo
way to go on the training! you are doing great and will not be swept! Yes, please come if possible. I am going the 5K and 1/2. You can walk with us if you want. and there is dinner on Saturday and the WISH meet on Friday. And with your determination, I'll bet you get the money raised.

Sandy
Thank you for the description of the 1/2. I was really able to visualize it. Gosh, I do hope that one CM IS NOT THERE!!!! I would be very distraught to get to the MK and not be allowed in.

and thanks for the prayers! we are feeling them.

Dolce
Thanks for the tip for going up the incline, I have been worried about that one. I haven't found anything around where I live that steep to practice on.

PS - will you yell for me also?:goodvibes

MIL passed away today. It has been very frustrating and stressful for DH and his family, but today was very peaceful and we were all sitting around her room joking with each other and eating ice cream. It was like she just wanted to be a part of the family one last time.

eyor44: Of course I'll cheer for you as well! About the time that the runners were shut out of the MK - it was a few years ago - 2005, I think. They've made a few changes since then such as separate the days that the half and the full marathon are run on. Both races used to start together on Saturday so they moved the full marathon to Sunday so the course wouldn't be as crowded. They also changed up the half marathon course route a little bit. The 1/2 used to enter the MK at mile 10 (like the full does) back then. When they moved the full to Sunday they changed the 1/2 to enter the MK at mile 5 (I believe). Another thing that caused the people to be so far behind that day and get shut out - a man had fallen on the course (I don't know what happened: dehydrated?, injured?, something much more serious?) The paramedics were called out and that backed-up the rest of the marathon and half marathon participants (which were just the walkers at that point). They got stuck back behind there until the paramedics cleared the area. So, it was a combination of several things that day: a seriously crowded race course as both the 1/2 and the full runners/walkers were on it at the same time, a mile entrance to the MK that is no longer that far out - your mile entrance is now a earlier one, and a sick or injured runner that backed-up the course. Don't stress about being shut out of the MK - it hasn't happened since that day.

I'm sorry to hear about your MIL

Sandy: Just a couple more days until ADR time. Are you ready??

eeyor/Lisa Glad to see you posting :goodvibes Sorry to hear about your mil - I know how stressful that can be for dhs - - I do agree about her wanting to be with the family one last time... we've been down that route also - being there, knowing, and with an illness, it makes it easier as opposed to the "sudden" passings... but it still is painful. Prayers for continued Peace!

Glad you liked the report (and read it) I was afraid it was TMI

Dolce thanks for filling in the gaps about the closure of the MK Gate - and you are correct - since that one awful day - its never happened again, and because of the route, I think they let people in at 17 - 18 min mile paces also - but dont quote me on that - I just havent read anyone being swept before Mile 10 - unless it was voluntarily!!

ADR I go from :faint: to :headache: Its so STUPID that Disney's IT department hasnt loaded in 2010 restaurants - that they are switching to 180 days is that their focus and :upsidedow everyone else???

DH is going to a convention Friday - thru Sunday - and taking is laptop - which I've stored the relevant info - so I'm down on the "old" rusty machine in the basement - and Firefox isnt cooperating right now!! I'm glad I posted the links here for Jan hours!! I havent sat down and figured out times - I know we want to eat at Cali Grill

Its just not looking like I will be successful - I get stressed - - back in the day when CRT was THE MOST hardest ADR to get there was a "club" Breakfast Angels - that were successful - there are people that know how to dial and be one of the first ones in at 6:59:59 BINGO they are in - I havent been lucky - I have in the past asked for their help, and have been dialing 3 phones - when they call and tell me they got my resservation!!

I never feel like I'm high stressed!! I just act that way??? :confused3

YIKES I'm Late for work

Maroo,

Stick with it. You've got nothing to lose by continuing to train and everything to gain.

How is Lauren's neck?

Sandy....ADR's will work themselves out :)

I got my 4 mile run in tonight. How is everyone else doing? Tomorrow I have 3 miles to run but we're expecting storms. Again. Mother Nature and I are going into round two. I'm winning this time!

... just found Sandy over on the dining threads stressing out about ADR's. :rotfl2: eandesmom: I don't think that she's read your message yet.

Sandy: I agree with eandesmom: the ADR's will work themselves out. Worst case scenario: you have to phone it in vs. doing it online and you get all of your ADR's except maybe one or two - but you're prepared with back-up restaurants so all is good. :thumbsup2

Did you ever post your finalized dining schedule?

Dolce27

Great job on the run

NO run here lol (as usual) but I did drag my unwilling behind to Zumba.

Sandy...

Breathe in the pretty colors....breathe out the bad....

You do have back up plans, right? Just think... you're likely to get most of everything you want, and if not, you're still going to have a great time. I've never had a really BAD meal anywhere on property!

Maroo,

Stick with it. You've got nothing to lose by continuing to train and everything to gain.

How is Lauren's neck?

Sandy....ADR's will work themselves out :)

I am still training!! :)

Now ask me what I have done this week?

EEK...not much.

Walked 3 miles on Monday. Tuesday I had Lauren from the time I left work until bedtime...and Wednesday we had an AWESOME service at my church and I ran the computer for it...so I didn't get home until late.

But Today....Today I am walking 3 miles when I get home from work!

Then I am taking care of Rachel this weekend while her Mom goes out of town...so I don't know how much I will be able to do? I can't leave her alone in her house...and I am sure she doesn't want to come watch me on my treadmill? Plus...I will be busy taking care of her. (And that should count as lifting weights or something??)

This is just a strange week?

... just found Sandy over on the dining threads stressing out about ADR's.

That is too funny! :-)

FInalized?

what does that mean??? :rotfl2:

I write everything in pencil!!

I think I read on the restaurant board that Boma has ribs on Sun, Wed, and one other day - plus the soups on that day sounded good to dh - no prime rib...

I'm getting skeeved out reading about buffet food....

Last Day we do Ohana Breakfast with Stitch!! :yay:
First day - we'll do OOP - maybe Beaches and cream - so no need for ressies on Jan 7...

Sat night CAPE MAY - for 10 - 12!! :dance3:

Not only do I have back up plans, but I have back up plans for my back up plans!! :rotfl2:
Most of our wants are at Epcot or Boardwalk places - (Since we are staying there!!)
I'm still trying to figure out calendars etc...

and I think if I work 2 more days I can afford to do the Wild By Design Tour in Animal Kingdom... so I want to coordinate Boma with that day... :dance3:

Did someone say BREATH>>>

:faint:
