Hakuna Matata - Fantastic in February

Lynn- So that is where all the snow is! It is certainly not here (compared to last year at least). As far as I am concerned, you guys can keep it!

Rick- I am starting to think about Goofy training a bit too. Plan as of now: since I am thinking of running hard for Donald, my Saturday training runs will be 8-12 mile run slightly slower than race pace, then a longer, slower run (working up to 20-24 miles) on Sunday.

Vicki- I sometimes go to bed within an hour of finishing a tough workout. When I know ahead of time this is the only time my schedule permits, I will get up an hour or so earlier in the morning…and I usually don’t have a problem going to sleep. Everyone is different, but might be something to consider trying before quitting.

es45: I do the Girl Scout cookie thing too. I was lucky this year, a relative bought most of my daughter’s quota…so none left for me to buy/eat. The funny thing is this relative is an endocrinologist – she makes a living by looking after people with diabetes lol!

Tandy: NFC girl? Don’t you live in KC area? Wouldn’t you be a Chiefs/AFC fan? I am actually a Bills and 49ers fan, so don’t really care who wins…but think Brady and co will take by at least a TD

AFM: I got in a good 13 mile run in yesterday, but a little disappointed it was on the treadmill. The last few weeks have been the same here- weekdays, when I don’t have as much time, have great conditions for a run. Weekends stink weather-wise- last weekend it was too much ice and slush. This weekend, it was wind chills of -25C/-13F, yet tomorrow will be sticking to the pattern and will be 0C/32F

Thanks to everyone on their input on trying for a PB during one of part of the Goofy race. I guess I will wait and how I do this racing season on reaching my goal time of 1:48. If I don’t get it, I may be more tempted to try for it in Disney. Then again, if I do get it this season, I may get greedy at try for 1:45!

My next question is about corrals. I understand you need to show proof to get into the different corrals. Does anyone know what times correspond with each corral? And would it be safe to assume that those in the first corrals will be less interested in taking their time and stopping for pictures…meaning there may be less congestion?

And thanks to everyone who added me on FB. I am still trying to associate some of your real names with your nicknames on here

Robbie

Robbie - I like that idea! I'll give it a shot this week and see what happens.

I think if you have a sub 2:00 proof of time, you should be able to get into the first coral. Tandy probably knows. I know there are people in the first coral who do take pictures but still finish around 2:00 or less. I think you're right though - those are the faster runners and so they'll be less interested in taking pictures ... so shorter lines LOL

We have similar weather patterns here - warm and dry on the weekdays and then cold and wet on the weekend. This is the first weekend in a while that it's been dry here. How fast are you finishing the 13 miles? I'm envious of everyone who finishes their LRs quickly! I think I'd have so much more time if I could run that fast!

Robbie: I had a 1:46 proof and got into Corral A. It wasn't congested for pics, but there were a ton of people. I started towards the middle/end of the corral because I knew I wasn't going for the front of the pack. I was, however, hoping for a 1:45 PR and ended up with a 1:48. Oh well.
Yes, I live in KC and will forever be a Packers fan. I am not originally from KC, so I don't have to be stuck with those Chiefs.
Sorry, but I don't do FB. So, you'll have to get all my sage wisdom here! :lmao: Yeah, right! I will help as much as I can, but am no expert.
I once ran 20 miles on the treadmill. Even getting injured during a run, that counts as my worst ever. Sooooo boring! but, sometimes, that's what you've got to do.

Vicky: You did great on your run. Wow, 8:00 during the last half mile. You can totally get that PR! I didn't ice skate. It was Harrison's lesson and we couldn't stay after because we had to get to my niece's party. But, next Saturday for sure! I love that they thought your sis was older than you! You look super young to me. My middle brother, who is 3 years younger than me, has always looked older than me. He even calls me his younger sister. I'll take anything I can get!

Rick: I'm glad the shoes worked for you. I looked them up, but I need more support. I love that the tread looks like a foot!

Elizabeth: I am impressed with your ability to avoid the cookies. I bought 11 boxes this year and they were gone within 3 weeks. God, I hate to even write that! :scared1: I hope you are able to get more miles in soon. I know you're nervous about the race, but just try to relax. You can do it!

Lynn: Truly, the best workout I've ever gotten was shoveling snow! So, good job. Of course, I know that it's out of necessity, but still, call it a workout!

Kim: Hi. Hope everything's going well for you. :)

AFM: Had an awesome day yesterday and things are going well today. Harrison and I got out for a 2 miler today. It wasn't his fastest, but he also didn't complain, so that's a victory! I took Archie the dog out for 2 miles also. Baked a cake, made homemade ice cream, Rotel dip and am getting ready for the big food push.
I managed to write 2 papers today and am hoping to study ethics at some point (test Tuesday). I always have tomorrow though.
Unfortunately, I have to do my taxes tomorrow and am not looking forward to it. I hate doing it every year. At least this year, I get to write off tuition. ;)
Enjoy the game everyone!

Rubato: I was exhausted after reading everyone you did today! How do you find the time to accomplish so much? Are you using "Santa" technology that distorts time (or maybe Hermoine's time-turner from Harry Potter)? :)

Vicky: Your story reminded me of one time when my Mom and I were walking in downtown Chicago maybe 20 years ago. A guy walked passed us and said "Aww, brother and sister!" Mom was smiling; of course I was like "no way!" :rotfl:

Elizabeth: We used to buy Girl Scout cookies but they are like my Kryptonite. S now we buy them for the troops instead and they never set foot in the house. If they did, then they would end up in my belly. Self control vs Kryptonite = epic fail! LOL

Hi Team.:flower3:

I walked .8 mile this morning to warm up then race walked 4 miles in 44:28 that's almost a full minute faster than my PR since I started back training last April. I've lost 10 lbs now since leaving for Disney so I'm sure that helped. My three pronged approach to getting better is working very well. I added an hour of sleep each night so I'm getting 8 hours, cleaned up my eating and increased the intensity of my workouts.

I can't even think about a sub 2 hr half right now that's pretty intense for a 60 year old race walker. I do think I'm going to beat the 2:30 barrier this year pretty quickly.

Yes the coffee helps, every morning.:yay:

Davepirate:

well I did it in about 2:07. My PR is 1:52.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I have problems going slow on training runs, I usually feel compelled to pick up the pace. I really feel I need to change this for training for a full marathon. Anyone think that the run above is slow enough? Or should I slow down even more?

What I have heard for Long Runs is cut your pace to 1 minute to 1 1/2 minutes slower than your race pace. Or, if you use a heart rate monitor and have set up your heart rate zones, to do the LRs in Zone 2

I believe in training by how you feel rather that following any particular plan for pace. It all depends on how well you slept, how well hydrated you are and a dozen other factors. One day a 10 min per mile might seem hard and on another day an 8 min per mile pace might seem easy to maintain. Run like you feel and just check the time after you finish. Or leave the watch at home and run like something wild.

I'm headed out for an easy 4 myself, yesterday was a 4 mile PR so I'm going to wear my heavy cushioned shoes and just cruise. No idea what the pace will be till I'm done.

Have a magical day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning team. I've been up since 2:30 for some crazy reason. I think it's going to have to be a nap day today. ;)

Robbie: I think you're time is okay, especially if you're going for the new PR. I have a hard time slowing down my LRs also. I was training for a 44 mile ultra (had to scrap it last month due to injury), and I was really struggling with how slow I needed to run and walking every once in awhile. Right when I got it all worked out, I got hurt.

Rick: I would love to have Hermione's time-turner, but will have to do with not enough hours in the day. I wasn't really accomplishing as much as it sounded like.

Dave: Wow, that's a fabulous time. Don't sell yourself short with that over 60, racewalker stuff. You walk faster than most people run.

AFM: Great game last night, but I blew it eating. I'm back on track today. Feeling sluggish and bloated, but it's a good reminder.

I walked the dog this morning, and am planning another walk since it's hitting 50 again today, 1.5 mile run with Harrison and zumba tonight. I'm getting ready to get the dreaded taxes done and then, need to study for an ethics exam. And, then I need sleep. I am so tired already and the day has really just begun. Ugh!!!

Hope everyone has a great day.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We are among the “non-football” folks. I like the idea of pretzel M&M’s. Yes, we are doing the 5K, maybe it will be as much fun as last year when we all literally strolled the 5K as a group! Marcia was our leader! Mike and Liz were with us. We spent yesterday packing for our trip - wanted to check weight and see if we needed to cut out anything - we are limited to 1 checked bag each - weight of 20 kg. (At first we read it to be 20 kg for checked and carry-on, but we searched the trip reports and they said it was just checked - we are over if combined, but under for checked). Good job on the workout!

Dave - Great job on the weight and sleep! I agree with Tandy, you walk faster than a lot of folks run!

Tandy - Shoveling snow is a good work out, but we only had to do it for about 10-15 min. Boy, quite a busy day!

Rick - Hope the new shoes work for you! I agree with you about the Girl Scout cookies, we still get a couple of boxes, but not knowing anyone here with kids in Girl Scouts helps, we do not feel obligated to buy from numerous kids.

Elizabeth - Can you cycle or swim without pain? If either one works, it would be a way to keep up the exercise until you can walk/run again. Our cookie sales don’t start quite yet, I think the paper said the booths wouldn’t happen until sometime in March. We used to get sucked in more when we were working with parents of Girl Scouts, now that we are retired, and live out in the country where there is not much door to door sales, our exposure is limited to in front of Walmart.

Robbie - We normally do not get much snow here, we have so much wind, what we do get blows to Nebraska! The earlier the corral, the less congestion. Can’t say what time cooresponds to what corral, but I know they have a chart - they look up the time and length of race on this chart, then assign you to the corral they think you belong in. This is at the service desk at the Expo. Once you have done a Disney race, you will be assigned corrals on those results, but you can try to “upgrade” if you do not agree with their assignment.

AFM - I feel like a slug after reading all that everyone else is doing! Yesterday was just a dog walk around the block - 1.25 miles. We spent the day packing for South Africa - needed to see if what we planned to take exceeded our weight limit of 20kg. We came in at 15kg for each bag. We finally found that we can check 2 bags each heading home on Lufthansa, but for interior flights, included the one from the Game Park to the airport for the flight home, we are restricted to one each, so it is a mute point.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Thank you Tandy and Lynn. Last year was base building after that long PF injury and then getting sick. This year is speed and endurance building and next year will be my year of finding out what I'm capable of. I'm shooting for a win at state in Oct and then placing in the Nationals in Aug 2013 and getting a slot on the USA masters team for the World Cup. Yeah I know I dream big but why the heck not? How else are you going to know if you don't go after it.

Easy 1.5 mile warm up then brisk 4 mile race walk in my cushioned shoes as a recovery day from yesterday's 4 mile PR. I race from 1500m to 5K so 4 miles in my standard training distance. I do a hard 10 miler on wednesday and normally a track day on monday. 2 days a week I go hard for that 4 mile distance. One day is complete rest from training and the other 2 days are easy days.

Our weather is mild right now for winter and I'm very glad, I'm still looking forward to the warmth of spring though.

Dave:hippie:

Hi Kids! It's Me!!

Okay, It's been about a month since I've been on here. I've been on FB with most of you, but I've been too unorganized to make it here to the boards. But, I'm back...

Robbie~ Welcome to the team! Sorry I haven't been here to say Hi! So, HI!! It sounds like you are a fast runner, and a fellow racer!

Still have to catch up on most of everyone's posts, so I'll just say how great it was seeing everyone at the WDW weekend. For traveling solo, I had a fantastic time, hanging out with everyone and can't wait for next year!

AFM~ I know it's old news by now, but I PR'ed by almost 25 minutes in the full marathon during the Goofy. I attribute it all to Vicky and Eva keeping track of our run/walk segments and forcing me to stay motivated. You have no idea how fierce they can be. :goodvibes I again thank the both of you for what you did for me! I now have the notion in my head that a 5 hour marathon is possible for me!
I've added a spin class to my exercise program once a week on Sundays. Its called Theater in the Saddle and they play a movie, during which everyone pedals at there own rate for about two hours. I am now going to invest in biking shorts.
I got a long run of 10.3 miles in last Saturday with Rick. It was really good to get out. After a long and stress filled week I needed the workout. I have also made a strong commitment to losing 25 pounds, and have lost 6.5 so far. (After the super bowl feast that we had at Rick's, I rufuse to step on the scale today) :rolleyes1 My goal is 200 pounds by the July Rock and Roll race in Chicago.

Hope everyone has a great day!

- Mike :cool2:

Vicky, could you please add these three races to the team schedule?

March 3rd- Little Rock 5k Little Rock, AK

September 1st - Disneyland Family 5K

September 15th - US Airforce marathon Dayton, OH

Thanks! -Mike

HAHAHA! Yeah, we did have a good time watching the SuperBowl. Well, I bit the bullet and stepped on the scale this morning...... Up a pound! Given what all we ate yesterday, I figure that is not so bad. Nothing a few runs won't burn off! :rotfl:

Vicky:

Can you add this race to the calendar for me:

April 15 - "Run Thru the Hills 10K" (Lake in the Hills, IL)

Thanks!

Oh, you are brave. I'm terrified of the scale and am not going near it for a few days! It sounds like you and Mike had a good time. :thumbsup2

Mike: Congratulations on the PR! :cheer2: I ran the full with Vicky last year, and she was AWESOME about keeping track of the intervals and pushing me when I needed it (thanks again, Vicky). I'm sure Eva was just as good. I'm usually a solo runner, but it's nice every once in awhile to have someone motivating you.
You've done such a great job that I'm sure you can reach your 5:00 goal and your weight loss goal.

Dave: What does "winning" at State entail? What kind of time are we talking here? I know you're determined and you've got a great plan laid out, so there's no holding you back! :thumbsup2

Lynn: Don't worry. I ended up being a little slothlike today.
You must be getting excited if it's packing time. When are you leaving? I'm trying to learn how to pack light, but don't think I'll ever get the hang of it. I like shoes too much! In thinking about Europe, I'm planning at least 6 pairs of shoes, and that's for 2 weeks in summer! I know that I have a problem.

AFM: Ended up scrapping the 2nd walk. I ran with Harrison and he just wasn't up for pushing the speed today like I had hoped. He did his 1.5 miles in 15:48. I am trying to get him to do one of his weekday runs at a faster clip, but he just seems to have one speed. Still planning on zumba tonight.
I got the taxes done and had quite a surprise when I added in my tuition and books!!!:banana:You really do get all of that money back (up to a point).

I'm trying to study for ethics, but I just don't like this class. So far, it's the only class I've had that I can't get into at all. I guess I should count myself lucky considering I've now had 13 classes in 3 semesters. I just really don't like the subject, it's nothing against the professor. Oh well. Suck it up and get through it, right?
I'm turning in my application for my scholarship tomorrow. I'm hoping to hear something within a month, and hope my essay is enough to sway them. It's about turning 40 and running marathons and having epiphanies, so it'll be good, right? :lmao:

Last Wednesday, when I did that brutal 10 miler, with the wind sprints during the last three miles my training partner said to me. "I'm glad to see your finally taking this seriously". That is my new mantra to carry me to victory at state this Oct. I seriously want this, want has become desire and disire is turning into a hunger. I touched my toes tonight. That was one of my short term goals, to touch my toes standing with my knees locked. A milestone and another step forward. Grrrrrrrrrr!!

Tandy, I will be doing the state senior games in Oct, they are the qualifier for the National Senior olympics held during late July to early Aug 2013 in Cleveland. The state has a 1500m race walk and a 5K race walk to qualify for the same distances at the Nationals. 1500m is about a 100m short of a mile and it's often called the metric mile. I will need to walk about a sub 9 min 1500 to get a shot at Cleveland.

My training partners and I are all going to be in the 60 to 64 age bracket at Cleveland, two of us will qualify for the Ky team and two for the Tenn team.

Mike with your work ethic you will be at your target weight real soon.

I was a pall bearer for my 85 year old uncle today and that got me thinking even more about how little time we have to accomplish our goals and live our dreams.

Have a restful evening y'all.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Scott and I are also doing the Disneyland 5K which could be added to the list. We have not yet confirmed bike rides for the summer.

Dave - Congrats on achieving one of your goals!

Tandy - We are pretty good about packing light most of the time. Shoes have never been a weakness of mine - for this trip, I will be wearing good walking shoes (actually light hikers), a very light pair of flats for dinner and a pair of croc sandals for going to the pool. Everything we have packed can be washed out in a sink and hung to dry overnight. It is the cruises that I overpack for.

Mike - Bike shorts will help if you are going to spend 2 hours on a bike saddle.

Rick - Glad you and Mike enjoyed the Super Bowl.

AFM - Out for dog walk then 30 min on spin bike. We spent the evening at Culvers (local hamburger place) for a MS fundraiser, we were delivering meals, had a tip jar out and our MS team gets a portion of the profits. It was fun, but 4 hours on my feet is mostly standing is more than I have done for awhile. Today is snowy and cold - high will only be about 20F, may not even go outside today!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team! Hope everyone is doing well!

Lynn - That's a long time to be on your feet. It reminds me of my baking classes. No sitting in that class so we were always walking or standing. It's not particularly comfortable after a few hours. Do you know how much you ended up raising?

Will get your race onto the calendar!

Dave - Sorry to hear about your uncle :( Congrats on reaching your short term goal. That's a tough one especially! If you qualify for the senior games, will you get to do a lot of traveling?

Tandy - Your essay sounds inspirational! Good luck! I hope your application for the scholarship gets accepted! My fingers, toes and eyes are crossed for you! I did an medical ethics class waaay back in the day. Our prof always gave us a lot of RL examples instead of just focusing on the philosophies and theories so I really liked it. I always liked playing devil's advocate. If it was just theories, it would have been b-o-r-i-n-g!

Thanks for the compliment! You were great at keeping pace! I'm terrible at pacing but I'm good at keeping track of the intervals

Don't forget to leave some room in your suitcase for all the stuff you're going to bring back :) You might end up finding some really fab shoes on your trip!

Mike - You're pretty speedy so I'm thinking you could get 4:30 for a full! And I thought you looked really fit so I'm not sure where you hide the extra weight!

Robbie - Like Rick, I generally run about 1-2 mins slower than my race pace for LRs. I try to incorporate speed work exercises during the week. I have a friend who's a 1:30 half marathoner and I asked him once about how to run faster. He suggested that on my training runs, I push to go a minute faster on alternating splits. I'm generally able to do better when I can pace someone who's running faster. Is the Blue Nose your next race?

AFM - I was at the gym yesterday and worked out with my trainer. He's training for a fitness competition so I'm always curious to see how he trains for those. I always think its crazy how many calories they have to consume to be able to bulk up!

I did a mix of leg and arm work and ended up sharing the squat rack with someone else who was working out with his trainer. He was working out at a slightly heavier weight so when I jumped back in, his trainer started changing the plates. Then my trainer says "No she's going to squat with that weight..." I think it was only an additional 5lbs on each side so I ended up doing few reps - no problem. I always like being able to keep up with the guys in the gym :thumbsup2

After my session, I did a 2 miler which was a mix of running and walking. That will be my speed work for the week. I'm going to start leaving Tuesday as a complete stretch and rest day.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:
