Hakuna Matata - April...and we're not foolin' around!

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - This trip to Hawaii is a DCL cruise, and we do hope to see Jeff when we are in Honolulu. Yes, short stop at time this time, we have 2 weeks at home. After this one, we have only short trips, over weekends planned for the rest of the summer (so far).

Sue - We board the dogs when we are gone, they love “puppy camp” as we call it. I think they would be happy as long as someone feeds them! congrats on Goofy registration.

Rick - Good luck with the hills if you decide to do the race, I would go with comfort, if you can run without discomfort on Sun then go for it, if the foot still hurts then wait. Are you using moleskin on the blister? I have also found corn pads work well, they have the hole in the middle and thick padding around the outside.

Elizabeth- Glad to hear the run went well!

Regina - I think lilacs are pretty hardy, I have never tried to grow them before, but our local extension service says they do well in wind, and they are planted in a wind tunnel between our house and pole barn. One of the plants has some buds sticking out, those are the ones I am worried about if it frosts with the predicted snow tomorrow. Good luck on your 16-miler.

AFM - Got in 45 min on spin bike yesterday. Dogs went AWOL for a bit - they escaped from back yard and went wandering around the neighborhood, we found them in the big field that is a common area for our subdivision. I decided not to reward their escape with a walk, and they were really pooped out when we corralled them. WE are preparing for snow tomorrow.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team!

Looks like everyone is busy racing or playing!

Dogs did get their walk yesterday, spin bike for 45 min. Today cold and very windy, snow in forecast for tonight.

Pixie Dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Happy Sunday all

Lynn: Snow, eh? We got a dumping last weekend. Thankfully all gone now, but I can very much appreciate how unwelcome the white stuff is this time of year.

Elizabeth: Totally agree with running improving your frame of mind. It is the surest way to improve a bad mood for me.

Rick: Saw your 10K result on FB, congrats on the very positive result! And a very hilly course makes it even more impressive.

Regina: Sorry to hear about the side cramps. Were they the dreaded side stiches? I get those from time to time still. The culprit is usually my breathing (too quick and shallow).

Sue: Nice to see another member of the team signed up for Goofy.

Vicky: Your goal is 2 hours? That was once a goal of mine. I found a very detailed "1:59:59 or bust" plan in a magazine that I followed to the letter (ok, may have made my speed workouts a tiny bit faster). Anyways, I ended up getting a 1:55 in that race. A friend of mine has the same goal…I am trying to find the magazine for him. If I locate it, I can scan email it to you if you want.

Eva: I run on trails quite a bit because about a 1/3 of my first marathon in the fall will be on a trail. Potential safety concerns are a bit different for males and females, so I am probably not the best to ask, but it if anything, I would recommend running when you know there should be lots of other runners on the trail at the same time.

Kipp: Dude, we are polar opposites. I personally don’t like running much above the 60’s. The high 30’s and 40’sare like the prime temperatures of me. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I hope I can see my breath Donald and Mickey mornings next January!

AFM: I was sick since Fri, April 6. Classic flu- high fever, coughing, no energy. Except for sporadic coughing attacks, I felt much better yesterday and today. I went for my first run in over week yesterday…I took it very slow and easy and I think I did pretty well despite an aforementioned cough attack. I am pretty concerned for my half marathon next weekend with the gap in my training. I think I need to get out of the PR mindset for this one and just go to have a fun experience. Sub 1:50 will have to wait for Halifax in May.

- Robbie

Thanks Robbie!

Yeah the race was pretty tough. Hills over hills all the way! But I finished it and even PR'ed the race with a 1:06:02 time (36 seconds faster than my last 10K). I clocked a 10:32/mm pace even with the hills. Not too bad, for me. :rotfl:

I really don't like hills. :rotfl2:

But today made me realize that I need to do more hill training. I ran most of the hills, but ended up doing more walking than I had planned for recovery. I need to get more used to running hills. I was 10 out of 12 in my age group -- the #1 guy ran it in 42:31. I know I shouldn't compare but....

My blister was okay for the most part, it started complaining a bit after Mile 4 but it is pretty much no worse for the wear. Now I get to enjoy my Taper for the IL Half on the 28th.

You can read my full race report on my blog.

Good Morning Team!

Rick - Good job doing the race in spite of the blister on your foot! Hills are my downfall too - in biking as well.

Robbie - Turned out we did not get more than a dusting of snow, but it was rather cold, should be warming up this week. Glad you are feeling better. Remember, it is better to be under trained and healthy than over trained and injured! I do not think any of us ever went into a race feeling “trained”.

AFM - Not much yesterday, cold and windy out, got caught up in projects and never made it downstairs to the spin bike. Today I will make it a priority.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Happy Monday team! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

Rick - Congrats on your PB! Especially on a hilly course AND you did it with a blister on your foot! You rock! How's your foot doing today? I'm not a fan of hill training but it really does make you a tougher runner and the hills get easier the more you practice them.

Oh and I always compare too  I'm always thinking if I could have done my training run in 42 minutes, I'd have a lot of extra time on the weekend! That kind of stuff.

Robbie - Hope you're feeling better today! If you do find the magazine article, I'd love a copy. I'll send you my email in a PM! Thank-you :) I'm readjusting my expectation for finish time - I think I'll be happy with anything under 2:10. But I still have two half marathons left this year to shoot for the 2:00 finish. The other two will be tougher because they're summer races.

I like cooler weather for running too but less so at Disney. Mostly because of the time that we sit around waiting for the start.

Lynn - How did your pups get out? Did they bust through a fence? They must have had quite the adventure! I'm glad you were able to catch up with them :) Are you planning for a stay at Aulani to go along with the cruise as well? Hopefully the snow fall wasn't too bad.

Elizabeth - Glad to hear the run went well! I think it takes a while to sort out back pain issues. I've had them before so I feel for you! Are you on pain meds? Is your daughter starting to get into running as well?

My fastest half was 2:08 and change - that was two years ago  I'm going to do some hill work this week and next and hopefully that will help since there is one big hill in the race.

Regina - Sorry to hear about the cramps and the new shoes. I can't remember if I asked but are you allowed to return them? Are you going to give them a second chance or are they just going to be gym shoes? I've seen people selling their shoes on eBay or even on the WISH board (on FB) saying they have a couple of miles on them. My stomach is feeling much better today! It seemed to have been a one day thing

Sue - I've wanted to try red quinoa but the bulk store doesn't seem to sell it. I've seen a pack of mixed color quinoa at the grocery that I might pick up next time. I've recently seen a lot of recipes where people are toasting quinoa - sounds yummy! I have in fact eaten it for breakfast! Believe it or not the first place I had it for breakfast was at AKL when I stayed in CL. It has an oatmeal like consistency sort like rice porridge but you still have to add stuff to it - nuts, fruit, brown sugar to give it some taste.

So glad to hear you're going Goofy! I've added you to the race calendar!

AFM - I did a 10 miler on Saturday and a 5 miler on Sunday. I got lucky for Saturday, missed the rain and had overcast skies so it stayed cool for the run. I was doing my run/walk intervals and I happened to start a walk interval near a guy who was out gardening on his front lawn. He looked over and said "Keep running!" I laughed and said "It's my walk break!" It was a slower run but overall pretty good.

I got caught in the rain on Sunday but luckily it wasn't too heavy. I was hoping for a faster pace but ended up with some knee pain even while walking. Soon as I finished my run and went back inside, it was gone. And today everything feels fine. Go figure. I did manage to get quite a few sub 10 m/m splits but those got cancelled out with the walking (I'm a really slow walker LOL).

I'm heading to the gym tonight for training and that's about it for this evening. My baking classes are done May and then I'm back in class again on Monday nights. We're doing breads over the summer - I think that works out well with the training!

How's everyone weekend, training, etc. going? :wave2:

I just registered for the Tower of Terror 10-miler!:woohoo:

Come join me!

Good Evening Team!

Rick, Fantastic Race Result!:thumbsup2

Elizabeth, Congrats on your race signup. Glad to hear you had a good run with no pain.

Robbie, I think you have a great running base built up. Stay hydrated and rested this week. I don't think you will have lost that much.

I'm a loser. I googled 1:59 marathon. They're talking full. I meant 1/2.:rotfl2:
I would love to see that training plan if you find the info.

Vicky, Baking bread. How will you have enough class time to let the bread rise, bake etc? How was tonight at the gym?
I've been working really hard on eating right. Don't let me blow it on Friday!

Got in a quick 5 tonight. A little sore after yesterday's 44k bike.

Have a great Tuesday. Happy training. It's pilates and a bike workout for me tomorrow.............Sue

Rick - Great job on the 10K! Can't wait to hear about your next run!

Robbie - I was fine with the cooler weather down at the Half in January. That seemed to be just about right for me. It's when it starts getting into the 40's that I seem to have the problem with my breathing. My lungs just start to feel like they're on fire from cold air. I'm going to have to figure it out since I plan on doing the Monumental Half Marathon here in Indy at the beginning of November!

AFM - Well, from my experience with the stairs up to my office at work today and some stairs that I had to climb at a job site, I feel that my left Psoas is about ready for me to at least try out the treadmill tomorrow night.

I'm thinking it'll be best to start off on the treadmill-o-doom to see if the softer impact will help me along than starting right back onto the asphalt. I'm going to do some walking and then a few test jogs to see how it feels.

It was still the strangest feeling to have it feel like one leg was longer than the other last week at the end of my run Thursday.

I did regular stretches tonight and a couple attempts at working on the Warrior Pose. I feel it would probably be helpful to have a mirror when trying out these poses, it's kinda hard to look at yourself to see if you're getting it right or not.

P.S. - Thanks everyone for the warm welcomes! :)

Sorry I haven't been on for a while but with work and training life has been full. This is a rest day so I have time to get some writting done. I even did a blog and Panda Rambling for the WISH.

Everything is going good and Sally and I happy and healthy. We are going to be traveling to a couple of races soon, the Indy half on May 5th and maybe even a Warrior Dash that will be in Elizabeth Town Ky.

I've tried to get on WISH a few times and not been able to get it to load and if I could couldn't get my post to take.

I do manage to get a facebook post in every day so most of you know what's going on with me anyway.

Hope everyone is doing good and is injury free.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - The pups got out by opening the door between the back yard and the garage, and the garage doors were open because Scott was in the barn. They have done this before, if we do not lock that door, but they would usually go straight to the barn if it is open. That day they wandered instead, and neither of us knew they were out. We were at Aulani in Jan., so this time we will just explore downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, which we skipped on our last visit to Hawaii. We can do that by public bus and walking, so no car rental. Maybe Jeff will come into town to visit with us. No snow, it went south of us (Denver got some), it is warming up now. Glad to hear you are feeling better!

Dave - DIS boards have been updating servers and have been off line a whole lot lately! Glad to hear you and Sally are doing well! And I have been following you on FB (even though I do not post there much, I do check in)

Elizabeth- Congrats registering for TOT.

Sue - Have fun with your Pilates and bike workout today!

Kipp - Good luck with the treadmill.

AFM - Got out for dog walk and 30 min on spin bike, pretty windy out there - 20-30mph winds, same for today (although it is calm right now).

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi everyone!

Lynn - How long were the pups gone for before you noticed them missing? That must have been quite the adventure! Let me know how the public transit goes in Honolulu. Jeff mentioned it to me but wasn't sure how frequently the buses came by etc. We got some of your winds here in Toronto yesterday. It was warm but seriously windy! I noticed a lot of downed branches and fences in my neighbourhood this morning.

Dave - Glad to hear you and Sally are doing well! Elizabethtown makes me think of the movie from a few years ago. Makes me want to do a road trip :) How are you feeling about the Indy half?

Kipp - I usually transition from TM onto the asphalt as well. I find it's a bit easier on the old joints that way. Have you been to a chiro or physio to check out your back?

Sue - Good question about the proofing. It's a three hour class so I'm assuming it will go for the full three hours. I'm hoping they use bread recipes that only require one proofing so that will get us out quickly. Mondays aren't ideal for me but they're much better than Fridays because I need the rest on Fridays for my LRs. The gym was good. I worked with my chiro on balancing and glute exercises. Did a bit of deadlifting as well.

We'll go for Swiss Chalet on Friday! Can't go wrong with grilled chicken :) No sugar pop either! LOL

Elizabeth - Yay for Tower of Terror! I saw pictures of the medal and it looks awesome! Are you going in costume for that race?

AFM - I was at the gym last night and will try to go for a run tonight. I'm still a bit sore from the weights so I'll take it slow. Hopefully, I'll make it back to the gym on Wednesday. How's everyone doing with their training?

Have a great day! :wave2:

Hi, folks,

Work is slowing up a bit so I'm sneaking a few minutes to post.

Rick: Congrats on the race and the PR! Glad your foot felt good enough for you to add another medal to the collection :thumbsup2

Sue: Yay for going Goofy! Hope you don't still have soreness on tomorrow's bike ride.

Kipp: Saw your post on another thread. I think calling the 5k/half "Pluto" is perfect. I may have to go Pluto too! How's the back?

Lynn: How easy is it to travel to the other cities/islands when you are staying at Aulani?

Vicky: My oldest DD is interested in running only because I do it. It is a great way for us to stay connected. I hope she keeps it up long after she stops running with me. As for a ToT costume: I'm toying with the idea. I've never done a full costume before but this might be a fun one to do! Have you started your hill work for the next race?

Robbie: How are you feeling today?

Dave: Glad to see you made it back on here. Do you and Sally feel ready for the Indy half?

AFM: tomorrow is my weekly run allowed by my PT. I'm anxious to get out there again. In the meantime, I'll keep doing my stretches....

My back is feeling fine right now, in fact is feeling much better than it usually does.

It's the other end of that muscle that's still a little tender, the end at the thigh. I did a short 1 1/4 miles on the treadmill, alternating walking and jogging. I also ran in my newer Brooks Trance 10's, which seem to be much more cushiony than the Asics GT-2160'sI've currently been rotating through (a red and blue pair, makes it easier to rotate). No twinges of pain like happened last week, so I'm hoping things are getting better.

Once I was all warmed up, I then did some of the yoga posed as some practice and then finished up with my after run stretches.

Trying to get into the yoga poses is presenting me with how much I still need to work on muscle tone, as my balance SUCKS! :scared1: So far I like the DVD that I got, because it's assuming that I'm starting off as a person that has no flexibility (true). So the poses aren't exactly like the full fledged bendy yoga people I see on the other videos I've watched on YouTube.

Good morning guys.

It was easy to get into WISH this morning, they must be done with the construction. Maybe I can come visit more now. It was just so frustrating to do a post after waiting to get on then not be able to post it.

Yes very ready for Indy, Sally is support crew, team panda is going and doing the 5K to warm up then the half. I would like to PR at the half but if I get boxed in to often like I did at Disney I will just do as I can.

For those of you that are not following my adventures in training on facebook. I was injured and sick last year after the Goofy and wasn't able to resume training till April, so I used the remainder of the year, 2011, as base building. Then after this January trip I went into a new mode of training for speed and endurance. I'm preparing for the State Games in Oct and then after I win them I will be going to Cleveland for the National Senior Olympics in Aug 2013. After the Nationals I hope to be in good enough shape to do national USATF competitions and then maybe a world cup or two. These would be competitions in the 60 to 64 age group of course.

Last week I race walked a hilly 4 mile course in 44:55 and did a 1 mile time trial in a pretty blustery wind in 10:25. MY last race was at Louisville over a very hilly 10 mile course and I covered it in 1:58. I think on a flat half I can break 2:30 now. I need to be around 9:30 per mile to be a contender at national and world cup level so I have my work cut out for me. I dream big and I'm curious to see how much I can improve and accomplish.

I'm getting some good coaching from some Warrior Princesses who are the best race walkers in the world for their age catagories so that's helping a lot.

My weight has leveled off at 169 to 170 and I'm maintaining that well. I lost 3 inches off my waist so all my clothes fit so much better now and I can wear stuff I haven't worn for a long time.

Anyway, be strong and fast feet for everyone.

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - I am not sure how long pups were gone, maybe 1/2 hour? From the research Scott has done, it sounds like the public buses run pretty regularly. Gotta watch out for those winds - LOL - we always have tumbleweeds in our yard - I just move them back out into the wind stream so they will head on eastward.

Dave - Disney races are notorious for “boxing in”, hopefully, Indy will not be like that. Congrats on the weight!

Elizabeth - Aulani is just west of Honolulu, it is easy to transit the whole island of Oahu if you have a car, to get to other islands, you would have to fly out of the Honolulu airport. There are “puddle jumpers” going to other islands, but I have never priced them out. Have fun on your weekly run, hope it becomes more than once a week soon.

Kipp - Good luck with the yoga!

AFM - Again, just a dog walk and 30 min on spin bike, pretty windy out yesterday, and supposed to be windy again today (15-25mph with 45mph gusts), so no outside bike ride. It is getting warmer, high today should be about 60F. The second plum tree (the one we usually get fruit off of) is in full bloom, hope there are enough bugs out to pollinate it (have not seen any bugs since it got cold). Aspens and Canadian Chokecherries are starting to bud out, still have buds on my lilacs, can’t wait until they blossom.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Dave: You are going to rock the Indy race! I can't wait to hear your post-race reflections/results! A PR would be awesome!

Elizabeth: Thanks! No medal for the 10K race but I love the tech shirt! How was your run today? Hope it went great, and that you will soon be cleared to run more often! You are going to have a lot of fun running the ToT (and the medal looks awesome!)

Kipp: Glad your back is improving and hope your thigh will do the same. I am having a pain in my piriformis the past two days so I am foam rolling and stretching. It is cool you are starting with yoga. Keep us informed on how that goes (I have never done yoga) and if it helps.

Robbie: Hope you are feeling better. Hey, if you find that sub 2:00 half article, can you send it my way as well? Can't let Vicky have 'all' the fun! :lmao:

Vicky: 15 miles over the weekend? Very nice! Glad to hear the knee pain was brief. It sounds like you are getting some of that speed back! I bet you could get your walk pace to at least 14:00/mm. How are your muscles today? Did you get a workout in today?

Wilbur: A 44K bike ride and then a 5-miler? Very nice! I used to ride but haven't in over a decade. I keep wondering if I should start again (of course my bike is ancient and would need a lot of work).

Lynn: Sounds like you have some smart dogs! When mine gets out, she likes to travel the block and visit. We have to catch her by driving along because she loves to jump in the car (stopped of course). If we try to catch her on foot, she just sees that as a fun 'game' and it is much harder. LOL

AFM: I rested on Monday and Tuesday, working in my home office to finish my taxes, organize files/papers, and get caught up on tasks. I was nursing a sore piriformis (since my race) and did not want to make it worse. So today I went out for a 6.46 mile walk and it went very well. Did stretching afterwards and the Piriformis was still a bit sore but definitely better. I might get a massage this week to see if that will help further. I want to be totally ready for the Half on the 28th.

Christi and I are attending the wedding of a young lady who used to be in my youth group a long time ago, so I am not sure if I will get any Long Runs/Walks in. We will have to see how things fall into place.

Have a great week everyone! PD to all in need!

Hi all

I found the "1:59:59 or bust 1/2 marathon plan" that worked really well for me (got 1:55 that time). I scanned it and can send it out to whoever wants it...just PM me with your email address and I will send it along.

I am feeling pretty good, although I still get coughing attacks when I try to run or work out. Doctor gave me an asthma puffer to use right before I run...hopefully it does the trick for Saturday. I still haven't done any quality runs (either fast or long) in over two weeks due to the stupid flu...so I am pretty much expecting this to be my slowest half marathon yet.

Hope everyone is having a good week!

Robbie

Good Morning Team!

Rick - Malamutes can be smart in devious ways - LOL, we did catch them in the car, Scott drove the jeep into the middle of the field - probably because they were not responding to his yelling at them to “come”. Have fun at the wedding!

Robbie - Pixie Dust to you for your illness and good luck on your race!

AFM - Nothing much happening here, windy again! Went out for some last minute shopping for our upcoming trip, and it took all afternoon! Today Dentist appointment (cleaning), then hope to get some more projects done and get in some exercise!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team!

Robbie - I sent you a PM with my email. Thanks for scanning in the article :) Fingers, toes and eyes crossed that you feel a whole lot better before your half this weekend. I hope you don't have to use the puffer but it's nice to have it anyway. I'll bet you're still faster than me even at your slow pace. Make sure you're hydrating lots before your race.

Rick - I've been training with my chiro this week and will probably step up my sessions and go in twice until July. I want to get rid of the extra weight and make sure I'm staying injury free. I'll give the 14 m/m walk a try. Usually my walking pace is in the range of 16-19 m/m. I'd like to say it's because I'm eating or drinking something but I'm usually not  LOL

How's your piriformis feeling today? Have you tried a foam roller or (eek!) a tennis ball? I hate using a tennis ball but have found it to be more focused on getting to the afffected area. Of course the massage sounds much better! Good luck on getting your taxes done!

Lynn - I thought of the old Road Runner and Wile E. Cayote cartoons when you mentioned tumbleweeds. LOL Have you thought of renting a bee hive? I had a family friend who use to do this - he was doing it to collect the honey but he always had bees buzzing around his fruit trees and veggie garden. I hadn't heard of chokeberries before. Do you use them to make a jam or in cooking? Forgot to ask you if Scott ended up making those SPAM donuts? I never was able to find a mini donut pan - just a regular sized one.

Dave - WTG on losing the weight and keeping it off! I think I once read that the Olympic race walkers can do something like a 7:30 m/m pace! There are some days I can't even run 9:30 m/m! That's awesome! You must get looks from runners!

Kipp - Glad to hear your back is feeling better! I'm not very bendy either so I was never very good at yoga. Do you go to classes in addition to the DVD work outs?

Elizabeth - How was your run yesterday? Hope your back is feeling better! I think running with your daughter is a great idea! You'll always have a running partner if she keeps it up! My parents aren't very active so it's not easy convincing them to try running or even walking. No I haven't started hill work yet  And now I realized that I only have 2 weeks left to the race! Yikes!

AFM - I worked out yesterday with my chiro and we did a lot of glute strengthening exercises. I think I like working out with him better than my other trainer LOL I may try and get in more sessions with him until the end of June. Not sure how that will work when my classes start up again in May but I'll figure it out.

I haven't done any running since Sunday - just a matter of scheduling and having other things to do after work. Hopefully tonight I'll be able to get out there and do some hill work. One of the hills that's on the half marathon course is about a 10 min drive from my house but I have to figure out where I can park my car. I could run over but am thinking that after several hill repeats, I won't want to run back home LOL

Oh and if anyone's interested. I have a new blog post up. This one is kind of cute ... bacon wrapped turtle hamburgers :)

Have a great day everyone!
