Hakuna Matada - Chilly November

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - Hawaii is pricey in general - it is one big tourist area. Having lived in a tourist area (Jackson Hole, WY) for a good part of my life, tourist prices do not surprise me. We have a fairly large fenced yard that the dogs can stay in - which they do whenever we go out and cannot take them with us (like all summer long when it is too hot to leave them in a car), so they have the opportunity to be outside whenever they want to. Good job on the distance training!

Dave - thank-you! Good luck getting thru your long day!

Tandy - I do agree that travel off season is much better, and we do that whenever possible. We will be at Aulani for 5 days. A 2 day party?!? That is quite a birthday party!

Emily - Layers are best for cold or cool weather - throwaway clothing is good for the hour or more that you have to stand around before the race at WDW. Disney is good about donating the discarded clothing to charity. We have gone to thrift stores for cheap long sleeved t’s or sweatshirts and sweatpants that we can dump in the clothing boxes as the race starts. Dollar store gloves are good also.

Elizabeth - Pixie Dust for you and your mother! Enjoy your new running shoes!

Sue - Hope you did not have to work too hard.

AFM - Got out yesterday for dog walk and then 45 min on spin bike. It was sunny but still rather cool (30 degrees). It is starting to get warmer, supposed to be 50 by the weekend, but windy. Scott made pumpkin pancakes for breakfast this morning - Yummy!

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Hi team!

Tandy - The mani/pedi was very much needed and very relaxing. It was kind of funny watching the two other ladies around me getting their pedis. They were supervising so to speak! One lady kept complaining that her toe nails were too long and she seemed really stressed about it. The other lady was fast asleep in her chair snoring! I was just texting and typing out emails  The spiders sound cool! The esthetician I was seeing does flowers but I didn't ask for them because no one's going to see them.

Pancakes are unhealthy? :scared1::laughing: This is probably a moot point since you already went to the grocery but what about a breakfast bar instead of pancakes? You have oatmeal or yogurt and the kids can top them with fruit, nuts, granola etc. Or for dinner throw in a veggie plate with a dip made of yogurt and onion powder? I dunno... if I was at the party, I'd want all the junk

Good luck on your 4 miler today! When are you planning to go for your 10 miler?

Lynn - I think I've been spoiled going to Disney for the past few years. Aside from the airfare, hotel prices always shock me! The pumpkin pancakes sound yummy!

Elizabeth - Lots of pixiedust: and good thoughts for your mom. I hope she gets better soon! I agree with Tandy, don't worry about your training for the time being. I think running shoes are a great birthday gift! :thumbsup2

Dave - Great job on the training!

Emily - Sending you lots of pixiedust: for DH! I hope his knee feels better soon! I agree with everyone on the throwaway clothes. I usually hang onto mine until close to mile 6 or further. I don't like feeling chilly. Also get some throw away gloves from the dollar store... Or you can just use old tube socks! Good job on the 9.5 miler!

Sue - I agree with everyone! Don't work too hard :)

AFM - This is more for the ladies (sorry guys... :cutie: ) OPI released a line of nail polishes for The Muppets movie. My esthetician pointed them out to me when I got there but she only said they were new. I just grabbed a sparkling red colour for my toes and a deep purple for my mani. I noticed afterward when my nails were drying that the polishes were sitting on a display with the The Muppets. I went over to see the name of the red I picked out and it was called "Meep Meep Meep". I assume that's named after Beaker who's my favourite Muppet. I thought that was cute! It's a nice red colour with subtle pink and gold sparkles in it. They also had some polishes with glitter chunks in them - a blue, rainbow and a pink but I hate removing glitter polish so I skipped.

I'm planning to go for a quick 3 miler after work tonight and that's about it. The eating is still going well! One good thing I've found with doing the protein shakes in the morning is that it's helped me to eat smaller portions throughout the day. Oh and I skipped the junk food at the grocery on Monday. There was a display of chocolate pretzels and Lindt chocolate but I passed on it all :thumbsup2 I did end up picking up some sliced pork belly though  I'm still deciding what to do with it.

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Good Morning Team!

Emily, It's funny how cold is all what you get use to. We had temps in the mid 40s-50s on the weekend. I ran in ss shirt/shorts. I will wear shorts & switch to a ls shirt even when temps are down to freezing.
My favourite through away - a garbage bag. Very easy to tear away then trying to pull off a sweatshirt over the head while running. I don't want to waste time stopping.;)

Vicky, I always love OPIs name selection. I'm hoping my regular pedi girl has got them in when I go in a couple of weeks. I loved Gettin Miss Piggy withit and Wocka Wocka.

Tandy, Go Bills! A couple of my neighbours are huge Packers fans. They even drove down a couple of weeks ago to catch a home game.

Elizabeth, Continued PD for your mom. Hope you can get back on your training this week.

Lynn, Scott sure does spoil you with tasty treats. The pancakes sound yummy.

Did a 45min bike workout last night. Except for dog walking tonight. I'm taking tonight off.
Have a great day everyone..........Sue

Hi Team!

Emily- Thanks for sharing where your name comes from! We had been planning to get the iPod touch for our travel, but then decided on the iPhone instead. How is your motivation? Is it getting any better for running? That would be frustrating to have family decide they’re coming out to see you without considering you may have plans of your own. I’m sure they mean well, but I would probably be frustrated too. When I run in the cold I wear gloves, fleece hats/beanies and layers so I can remove a layer as I warm up. I also get a runny nose when I run in the cold, and if it’s really cold sometimes my chest will burn. I prefer running in colder weather though. Have you decided how long you will be staying and where you will be staying in Jan yet? Sorry to hear about DH and his knee giving him trouble. I hope the physical therapy is helping.

Vicky- How did your Ugg boots get waterlogged last year? I never knew you could gain water weight from flying. Interesting to know. Congrats on being back in the 130s!! That is awesome!! Glad you made it out for your 14 mile run and finished. It is better than not being able to run at all. Hope you enjoyed your mani/pedi! Good luck on your 3 miles today. Way to go passing up all the treats at the grocery store!

Tandy- I never knew Zappos had sales for Uggs either. I may have to keep an eye on that for the future. My DH is working on Thanksgiving so I will not be doing anything besides running. I haven’t decided yet if we will do our dinner on the Monday before or the Friday after yet. How is the calf? Glad you had a good 10 mile run! Haha, I love Black Friday shopping! I am pretty bummed I will not get to go this year. Good luck on your 4 miles today.

Eva- LOL, yes good luck getting Jordan to sign up for the 5k with you if you get the day off work.

Kim- Glad you had a great vacation!

Dave- Glad you had a wonderful trip. Congrats on the great training walk Monday after your trip, and yesterday as well!

Mike- Congrats on the Hot Chocolate 15k and having a great time at it! Looking forward to your RR!

Lynn- Glad you enjoyed the Lion King show! When are you guys headed on your Dream Cruise and to Aulani? How long have you been DVC owners? I love pumpkin pancakes! Yum! Does Scott have a special recipe he uses? Glad you were able to get the dogs out for a walk and use the spin bike yesterday.

Sue- Hope you enjoy your dog walk tonight! When does your ironman half training start?

AFM, I had a 6 mile run Mon and 13 mile run Tues. They were supposed to be my Sat and Sun runs but got pushed back a couple days. The 6 mile run went great and I felt good after. The 13 mile run however, did not go as well as I had hoped. I got really bad side cramps first in the right side about 6.5 miles in and I just couldn’t seem to shake them. Then I got them in the left side about 1-2 miles later…so then I had them in both sides. Around mile 9 my lower stomach started hurting (in addition to my cramps) so I ended up walking the last 4 miles. I didn’t want to push it, but I did finish. DH offered to run ahead to go pick up the car and come back and get me and I said no way. I was definitely disappointed and I am a little worried I may have bitten off more than I can chew with Goofy… DH reminds me I still have 2 months of training left and told me not to worry at this point since I still have more training runs to go. I know not every training run will be a good one; I’m just a worrier by nature. I’m not giving up and hopefully this is not indicative of how all my long runs are going to go. My right knee also started hurting about half way through, but I believe that is because I was running on uneven road with lots of hills and curves and that meant my right foot was often landing higher or lower than my left foot and putting more pressure on my right knee. I could tell when I was on more even road that my knee was not as tender. I iced it last night and may ice it again today. It’s still a little tender today but not as bad.

Anyone else want a medal? So far I've got 10 people down, I'm going to ask for a quote tomorrow.

Hi Team!

Regina~ Don't worry about one bad 13 miler. I've had plenty! Kyle is right, you can accomplish alot in two months of training. I know I have to really hit it hard myself. You will do fine in the Goofy! :goodvibes

Vicky~ A goal of a marathon in Honolulu eh? I've made the decision to do at least one in every state. I've done Illinois and Wisconsin this year, and Florida and Arkansas scheduled next year so far. Maybe Liz and I can join you in Hawaii in a couple of years?

Tandy~ I also like the Bears as my "home team". Liz is from the East coast, and I'm a Patriots fan by marriage. Her Mom lives in MA, so for Liz's thirtieth birthday we flew out and went to a game. I had a great time and really like Brady. I'm not a dynasty believer. It only takes one key injury to destroy the season, so each one should be taken on its own. We also went to the Bears-Pats game in Chicago last year in a blizzard. We wore our Pats gear and got razzed quite a bit, but they kicked the Bears collective butt. I was really surprised how many Patriot fans were on the train into the city!

Sue~ Buffalo? Your team is doing well this year!

Lynn~ We got your weather again! Brrrrr! Flurries predicted for tomorrow. Whenever I get to crossing WY or CO off my marathon list, I'd like to stop by for a visit since you are not to far out from Denver. I'd love to meet the pups!

AFM~ I have one more race for the year, a ten miler this weekend and then its hard training for the Goof. ( I just hope to finish) We are busy planning our race schedule for next year and, with Disney, I have about 14 on the books so far. Liz said I can only do one or two a month. I think she is doing at least three triathlons and a couple of halves with me.
I hope to get at least five miles in tomorrow. The weather isn't cooperating, so it will be on the treadmill at the gym. I can take snow flurries, but not the 45 mph gusts of wind. :scared1:

-Mike :cool2:

Hi team, I survived the day. A great 6.5 miler and then an 11 hr shift at the store and I'm bushed.

Mike you will do fine in the Goofy, your training a lot more than I am and I'm not worried at all. You will be sore Monday after it's all over but during the weekend you will be fine. I've done several marathons and they are just one long party. Yes there will come a time about mile 20 where you are just going on will but your strong and you will do great.

I'm ramping up now myself, getting into War Panda mode, Grrrrrrrrrr!!

Everyone have a restful evening.

Dave:hippie:

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - the pumpkin pancakes were really good, in fact, we had them again this morning - left-overs from yesterday. Good job skipping the junk food! I would not know what to do with sliced pork belly. :rotfl:

Dave - Glad to hear you survived your long day - have fun today!

Mike - We are not far from Denver and right off of I-80, you are welcome in our home (as long as we are in town ). Denver does have a fun marathon - we did it the first year it was taken over by the Rock n Roll folks. I am not sure what there is in WY that I would recommend, but I can research it for you. The best plan would be to come and stay with us for 4-5 days to a week before running in Denver so that you can acclimate to the altitude - we are higher than Denver, so it would give you an edge.

Regina - We have been DVC owners since the beginning (1991), and have added on throughout the years. Our trip is the beginning of Jan. I have heard that putting your arms up in the air will relieve cramps - I have never tried it. My knees do not like uneven surfaces at all.

Sue - Yes, Scott is a great cook!

AFM - Got out for our dog walk, then 30 min on spin bike and 30 min doing weights. It was warmer by temp yesterday, but colder in feel due to the wind. Today should be warmer but even more windy - so we will see what the wind chill is later today. Tonight we are going to see “Fiddler on the Roof” in town.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

:bday: :cake: :cake: :bday:

party: Happy Birthday Mary!! party:

:bday:

Hope you're having a great day!

Good Morning Team!

Mary, Happy Birthday. Hope you have a great day. Anything exciting planned?

Vicky, Did you read Wed's Metro. There was a 2pg spread on Aulani.

Lynn, Have a fun evening.

Mike, I thought DH and I were the only race preplanners. Any tris for you next year?

Regina, Regarding stitches. Did you eat or drink too much right before your run? For some people too much in the stomach can cause a stitch.
If the stitch is on the right. Exhale when your left foot hits the ground.

Even the dog didn't get for his walk last night. Rainy and very windy.
Have a great day...........Sue

Hi everyone!

Sue - Yes, I saw the article in the Metro! I wanted to go even more :) I got caught in the rain going home but went out anyway for a quick 3 miler. I run on the road it got my shoes throughly soaked because I couldn't see all the puddles

I was deciding between Wocka Wocka and Meep Meep Meep for my pedi :) You know I saw the bottle of Gettin' Miss Piggy Withit and didn't even clue in that it was The Muppets. I figured that Piggy referred to the toes  There's a color that's called Designer something and that's a really pretty color if you like neutral/beiges. I'm going to get that one next time.

Lynn - I will probably broil the pork belly in the oven or just grill it on the stove top. Someone said that it's just thick sliced bacon  I know there are recipes where people cook it directly in rice - it gives it a really nice flavour because of the fat but I'm trying to cut down on carbs so I'll probably just season and grill. Good job on the workout and walk! Have fun tonight!

Dave - That's a long day! Good job on the walk! Don't work too hard :)

Mike - Of course! The more the merrier! I always look forward to races with friends! And Hawaii would be awesome! Are you going to try and do a race in every state? Let me know when you get a list together and I'll put you on the racing calendar! Do you have a goal time for the Goofy? Or just finishing?

Regina - WTG on your back to back long runs! I've found that anytime I run a certain distance as part of my training run, it's always tough. But the next time you come back and do that training run, it will be much easier. You have two months of training left so don't worry. There will be a bad run or two in there - as long as you're getting them in, you'll do fine!

I agree with Sue... it could be something you're eating or drinking before the run. Maybe running too soon after eating? I remember a while ago, I ate a pear before my long run instead of an apple. It gave me really bad cramping. I figured they were the same thing. Or maybe it's not having enough electrolytes in your system?

Last winter was really slushy I wore my Uggs out a few times and they got really soaked. I think there's a hole or a crack in the sole somewhere. I bought a pair last year and I'll probably wear them on dry days.

You should go shopping when you're in Orlando. The outlets are a 10-15 minute drive/cab ride from WDW. Just sayin... :)

AFM - Even though it was rainy last night, I went out for a quick 3 miler. It was hard to see and several times I ran through puddles. My shoes were completely soaked by the end. My Garmin crashed at the end of the run because the bezel kept getting triggered by the rain drops. The GPS got turned off and part of my run didn't get recorded.

Tonight I'm off to the gym for a training session and then I'm meeting a friend for dinner.

Quick cooking question for those in the know... What's the best way to skin a butternut squash? I use to buy them from the supermarket already cubed and peeled but figured it's probably cheaper to buy them whole. I saw an episode of Jamie Oliver's 30 Minutes Meals where he just chopped up the top half of the squash (skin and all) and threw it into a curry stew. I thought the skin would have been tough and chewy? Of course, he also threw several pieces of garlic into the press without peeling the skin off - his reason, there was no time to peel them for a 30 minute meal  I'd imagine garlic peel would disintegrate because it's so light ... not so much with the butternut squash.

Have a great day! :wave2:

Good morning Team.

I had a good training walk this morning, .8 mile warm up then 4 miles in 47:36, felt strong and concentrated on good technique. I will start turning up the intensity soon.

Here is something I wrote for the International Athletic Alliance Site:

Dream big and let know one tell you different! To make your dreams come true you have to be able to believe they can and you have to be able to visualize them. When you start to run out of steam, let those dreams sustain you. Strap on your best Grrrrrrr!! and get after your destiny!

That's kinda how I'm feeling today and wanted to share my joy.

Have a super day y'all.

Dave:hippie:

This morning I did an easy run before work. Ran 3.6 miles at a 10:45 leisurely pace. It was 30 degrees outside with a windchill of 21 degrees! Winter has arrived. So I tried on some new gear I bought: some new running pants, a nice hat that covers my ears, and smart wool socks. I also wore a new pair of CW-X compression pants.

I was pretty warm on the run, which was good because it started SNOWING while I was running! That was a first for me. It didn't snow enough to stick on the ground, but it was actually pretty cool running while the flakes were coming down.

A fun start to my day!

Hi Team!

Mike- Thanks for the encouragement. Wow 14 races next year is a lot! Hope your 5 mile run went well today.

Lynn- I had never heard of putting your arms up in the air to relieve cramps. I wonder if it really works. Hope you enjoy Fiddler on the Roof!

Mary- Happy Birthday!!

Sue- I don’t recall eating or drinking too much right before my run? And I waited at least 2 hours before I ran after eating as well. The stitch started on the right though, so I will try breathing when my left foot hits the ground if I get one in my right side again. What kind of dog do you have? I hope the weather is a little better today.

Vicky- I don’t think it’s eating/drinking too much because I already know my stomach is sensitive to running too soon after eating, so I don’t even go there. But I will try to pay closer attention to what I am eating and try to stick with what does not seem to give me cramps and see if that helps. I wondered if it was a lack of electrolytes as well. I hope this winter isn’t really slushy. I would be upset to ruin a pair of Uggs. LOL, oh we went to the outlets the last time we were in Orlando. I have a tendency to overspend on that stuff when I am on vacation… :rolleyes1
Wow, was it really hard rain? I thought Garmin watches were supposed to stand up to the rain/snow?
I do not know the answer to the butternut squash question.

Dave- Glad you are having a joyous day!

Rick- Glad you enjoyed running in the snow.

AFM, I ran 3 miles this morning on the TM. Legs were still a little bit sore from Tuesday’s LR, but other than that it went well. Anyone have any plans for the weekend?

Good Morning Team!

Vicky - We did have a good time last night - went out to dinner before the show - show was great - but too long, we did not get home until after midnight - way too late for us old folk!

Dave - Have a great day!

Regina - Weekend plans are to recover from Wed/Thurs/Fri (Wed night we had a bike club meeting, last night was Fiddler on the Roof and tonight is a concert by a local group of kids - really great musicians - raising money to get to the International Blues Challenge in Nashville - they went last year and came in second - pretty good for high school kids competing against professional adults. We are not used to 3 nights in a row out LOL.

Mary - Happy Belated Birthday!

Saylan -
Sue - Hope the dog gets his walk tonight.

Rick - Good job running in the snow!

AFM - We did have a great time last night! Got out for dog walk and spent 60 min on the spin bike.

Pixie dust to all who are in need!

Have a great day team!

Good Morning Team!

It was a chilly walk to work this morning. Got out for 5 last night and it's a rest day today.

Vicky, Re: bn squash. Are you skinning it to add to another recipe or eating as a side. Cook it in the mircrowave. Use a glass (pie) plate with a little bit of water. Cut squash in 1/2, clean out the centre and put face down on the plate. If only to trying to skin micro for about a minute maybe less to soften skin and peal. Or roast it in the oven with the skin on. Cut squash into 1/2 then 1/4 etc until you have smaller pieces, spread out unto a cookie sheet and bake. I'm usually bad and add brn. sugar, nutmeg and butter. So many ways to cook and eat it.

Regina, I have a lab (choc.). We don't run/walk together. My run is mine time and his walk is his time.
When you had the side stitch was the air cold(er) than it's been? Are you taking deep enough breathes?

Lynn, How was the play? Haven't seen that one in a few years. We are seeing Mary Poppins in a couple of weeks. You've been correct?

A heartfelt thankyou to all the veterans today!
Have a great weekend and training everyone.................Sue

Hi team. No time to get a real post in. I just got done with a 4 mile run, am heading to Harrison's school for their fall party, and then, will be inundated with the herd of boys for the whole weekend. I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend, and I will try to catch up with everyone on Monday.

:cheer2: Weekend Racers :cheer2:

Good luck Mike on your race weekend! Hope the weather stays dry! Can't wait to hear about it!

Hi team! Happy Friday! It's Rememberance Day in Canada and it's a semi-holiday. So most government employees and bank employees are off for the day. Except for me. I work for a part of the bank that's provincially legislated and doesn't get the holiday (which is a federal holiday). Aside from the time off, I think Rememberance Day should be a holiday but I digress.

Just a quick fly-by for me today as I'm going to take advantage of the empty office and quiet work environment.

I was about 15 minutes late for my training appointment yesterday even though I left the office at 4:30. I left myself an hour and a half but was still late because of traffic. So I got a super butt kick condensed workout which I like and don't like. I don't like because there aren't as many breaks in between sets but I like it at the same time because it's challenging. Then other trainers kept trying to cut in and take the weights we were using. So I ended up doing some sets with weights that were 5-10 lbs heavier than I'm normally use to. I guess it's a compliment of sorts that my trainer didn't fight to keep the lighter weights.

I have a 16 miler scheduled for tomorrow. Not sure if I'll do my hilly 8 mile route twice or maybe I'll do my 5 mile route twice and then once around my 6 mile route. 16 seems like a lot to me but it's also exciting that it's close to 20 miles! I've done full and 19 miles as part of a race but never a 20 mile training run. LOL

Sue - Thanks for the butternut squash tips! I originally wanted to cube them and use them in a curry but found a recipe for mashed butternut squash so I want to give that a try as well. Definitely chilly today! I took my winter coat with me

Tandy - Good luck and have fun at the party! Lots of happy birthday wishes to Harrison!

Lynn - Old? Never :cutie: I was telling Regina the other day that I was tired and ready to go to sleep at about 10PM LOL Good job on the spin bike workout! Have you put the street bikes away for the season or are you hoping to get in a couple more rides before the end of the year.

Regina - Yeah I do that at the outlets too   The Garmin has a touch bezel but sometimes when the raindrops are big enough, they can trigger bezel and scroll through the menus. There's a function to lock the bezel but I never remember to use it in the rain. Give the electrolytes a try before your next run and see if that does the trick. I usually have a glass the night before a LR as well.

Will catch up with everyone on the weekend! :wave2:

Good morning Team.

I feel like a new panda today after taking a day off from training yesterday. I had 4 hard days in a row so the day off was needed. Today and tomorrow will both be an hour brisk walk with Sally and then off to work. Monday I'll start all over again with the speed intervals, then a 4 mile tempo walk on Tuesday, the 6.5 mile high intensity group training walk on Wednesday, day off Thursday and then a 4 mile tempo on Friday. Each week will be about the same except for a few 8 to 10 milers mixed in when I have the time. Does everyone else have their plan laid out for the last 7 weeks before the Marathon/Goofy weekend?

I sure hope we get some good weather for this Disney trip, the last two years have been chillier than I like. I haven't been able to wear shorts for the last two trips.

Have an awesome weekend guys.
