Guest attacks security at Disneyland - makes you think about how safe it is...

Wait, you guys are annoyed by the yelling woman and not the idiot frat guys? "We're just tryin' to help man." By hovering over them with a camera and narrating how "Epic!" this all is? Those guys were morons.

If I saw this in a park, or anywhere for that matter, I would get myself and my family away from it as soon as I saw it, and looked for help for them. People are crazy & it could have gotten worse real fast. Standing around videoing and screaming to stop is not helping at all, they could have gone to get the CM help.

I think maybe they should start equipping the security people with tasers or more potent pepper spray. As soon as that guest slapped and then attempted to kick the Disney CM he pretty much deserved whatever he got, imho.

It is pretty sad/ridiculous that there were other guests that were more interested in taking pictures and video as opposed to either helping the CM or getting out of the way. But that is how more than a small percentage of people behave now.

I am shocked at how ineffective the pepper spray was. I have seen police training video where one good spray definitely stops them. I have also wondered if guests were allowed to carry pepper spray or if Disney considers it a weapon and does not allow it?

I think the guard did his best, and no guests got hurt so kudos to him. And although the woman was annoying she did get the guys to help the guard at the end.

Apparently he tried to use an expired fastpass and was immediately pepper sprayed. They aren't kidding about the new rules. Didn't even take his excuse that he had been busy getting pepper sprayed at California Screamin and couldn't make it over in time.

That reminds me of any given Dog the Bounty Hunter episode. At some point, that guy will be in the back of a Tahoe, having a heart to heart conversation with a CM, being offered a cigarette. "C'mon bra, we love you man...get your life together".

Not sure if mace is still legal, but clearly some people can take a load of pepper spray and not even flinch.

You can bring in pepper spray, at least at WDW. I often keep some in my fanny pac...err, man satchel and have not had a problem. They will ask to store a knife if they see it though.

I bet Disney uses a lower strength concentration and uses foam, not a spray, to minimize collateral spread to other guests. Some of that stuff is not as effective as you might think but is usually a worthwhile trade off over contaminating a good sized portion of the park.

I wonder if Disney would cover any liability if a spectator intervened and was then sued by the agitated person. I suspect not. Therefore I can't really blame folks for standing back until it looked like the guard might get seriously injured. Besides, you never know if the agitated person has a bunch of big, equally violent friends coming off a ride who would gladly dogpile you.

Face it, in a country were Disney gets sued by lawyers "representing" blind folk jumping into a fight between some guy and an employee is highly risky, Sad, but welcome to America.

We live in a two class system. Generally the lowly civilians must live with inferior products (when compared to the police).

This guy's spray/foam was definitely the weaker variety they allow the second class people to purchase.

In any event, full strength or not, spray/foam is meant to temporarily distract an adversary. Either for you to get away or to go hands on and physically subdue them. It isn't meant to sprayed onto someone and let them lay around while they regather themselves so they can press the attack yet again.

Some people naturally have a higher tolerance as well.

I don't know the layout of that park but 4 minutes may not be that long for that part of the park.

It goes to the old saying: When seconds count, police are only minutes away.

I'm just glad no one was seriously injured.

And no you guys aren't alone when talking about that crazy screaming lady. There always seems to be one. Why they can't stop yapping is beyond me. They only make things worse.

Also once the guy went down the guard should have went to cuff him (he should have cuffs right?) From the looks of it, that was the guards first fight, so he was probably so tweaked out on adrenaline, it's understandable.

There are two things I absolutely love about this video

1. The girl that's repeatedly yelling "Stop! This is Disneyland! There are kids here!" Cuz ya know, that's helpful...

2. In true Disney form they hand him napkins to wipe his eyes after they pepper spray him

Lol! I was thinking the same thing! The situation itself wasn't funny, but that woman squawking and the napkins part were hilarious.

As for how long it took security to get there - I have no idea about Disneyland, but it's not like I expected a SWAT team to come get the guy. Four minutes isn't that long of a response time in a place that big. This type of situation is obviously rare, so it's not like they need heavy duty guards every few feet - or even in every area. It was a long time from the security guard's POV, but not a long time for a response.

And on another note: I feel perfect safe at the Disney parks. One aggressively belligerent customer out of thousands and thousands per day - not that bad.

I'm equally annoyed by the screeched and the dude-bros but moreso I want to know why the guy wasn't cuffed as removed as soon as he was down the first time. Do the guards not have handcuffs? If not is there some reason they don't have restraints issues to them?

It's not like Disney takes psychological profiles of everyone that comes into their parks so of course something like this could happen. I still think Disney is safer than MANY places on this Earth. I've travelled to dozens of countries and I come back to Disney (world) because it is happy and magical...and SAFE(R).

After looking at the video, the man does seem to be under the influence of something and perhaps suffering from a condition (he reminded me of how my mentally impaired brother sometimes acts). Of course, even the most 'normal' of people will lash out like an animal if they are treated like one (not that he didn't deserve it but if someone tries to pepper spray you and there are people pointing and laughing and yelling at you, would you just take it?).

I wonder, do you think the situation would be the same at Disneyworld?

Not sure it can be expected that security show up instantly when something out of the ordinary happens like some crazy dude freaks out and attacks a castmember (a very rare occurrence). If I were on the Metro this afternoon and some crazy guy attacked somebody there probably wouldn't be transit police instantly materializing, and it's not as rare an occurrence there. I can't see it as being different from anywhere else just because it is Disneyland.

Remember the guy who assaulted the bus driver (apparently he actually threw his baby at the driver) when he didn't get on a bus at WDW? Took a couple of minutes for security to show up there too.

I agree that I would have taken my child and gotten as far away from that as possible before the man pulled a gun or knife BUT I do applaud the guests (including the frat boys) who jumped in and pulled the man from the security guard with no regards about their own safety. I'm not saying I would have wanted my husband to do that but I think they deserve a pat on the back and free ticket to DL for their willingness to help and not run away.

CMs are trained not to interfere, their jobs are not to get into a fight with guests, even to "help." The ToT CMs did their job, they were attempting to move the crowd back. Probably had been told to before the video began. That's why you see the manager that shows up later in the video do the same thing.

To chide the guests for not helping is ridiculous, in general if you see a confrontation you're supposed to stay out of it.
