Guest Assistance Cards ending, to be replaced with Fastpasses?

But what I can say is that I despise the idea of "special kiosks" just for those with disabilities. What a complete lack of privacy and discretion that creates. If they want to incorporate the DAS into the FastPass+ kiosks then fine, but to single folks out at "special" kiosks isn't right.

I think you've made an excellent point. If the "special" kiosks are a benefit to some people, then that truly is great for them, but there really is a problem with lack of dignity and privacy for many other inidividuals who are living with health difficulties or disabilities. At least a GAC could be used discreetly for any guests who preferred.

As we've seen with these discussions, accommodating disabilities is an infinitely complex and sensitive challenge, and the risk of unintended consequences with a new program is always high.

I love this post so much. My daughter has a heart defect which is somewhat corrected by a pacemaker implanted when she was four days old. While there is always the possibility that she'll have other complications, right now she just has to avoid powerful magnets and airport security scanners (and since she's only 20 months old, it means mommy gets the pat down, too). I've had a few relatives say things like, "well, maybe she'll play the piano or sing since she probably won't be able to play sports." Don't set limits on my child. Her body may set them at some point and I realize that. But I don't want other people to do it for her.

Thank you! This is exactly my point. Your daughter may have a heart problem, but she is a precious little girl. Our special children should not be made to feel like they are "less than" because of their difficulties and least of all by their parents putting limitations on their aspirations. Many of the rants I have read (thankfully not here on the DIS) about the system change are all about what their child can't do. Sadly many people are focused on what makes their life easier.

Focus on what they can do and focus on what you can do to improve that and support them to surpass expectations. Maybe your daughter will be the best pianist in the world one day, maybe she will sing like an angel and you know what, maybe she won't, but she is perfect and precious whatever happens and your job as a parent is make her the best she can be. Good luck and best wishes to your little angel!

I'll preface this by saying that I haven't used the GAC system, although we had been planning on it for our 2014 trip. I'm traveling with two adults with mobility issues as well as one with severe COPD (will probably be on oxygen by our trip).

I think that by the time you go, FP+ will likely be fully implemented. That should help greatly.:thumbsup2

I noticed in your other posts that you have a trip coming up. I don't know if this is helpful or not, but we're going in mid-October for just two nights at POFQ. Disney just sent us an offer to try out the new Magic Bands/FP +.

I really don't know how they choose people for the program, but I wonder if changing your resort could help you be picked as well.

Again, I have no idea how they choose, just thought I'd share.

It isn't really getting "chosen" at this point. If you are checking in to a Disney resort on or after the day it goes "live" for MagicBands/Fastpass+, you're in.

This thread has the schedule for when resorts have been going live in the first post:

ALL Disney resorts will be live by October 23rd, and they just basically opened up MagicBand customizations and FP+ for November stays.

I just read down a little of your link. We're going before the 23rd and the e-mail Disney sent reads, "special test." I did sign up but still have a lot to learn.

It's the same email they've been sending for a while. It's still considered a test at this point, since it is not live for everyone.

POFQ is live this coming Monday, so anyone checking in on or after Monday would be getting the letter/email/etc. some time before their check-in date.

Changing resorts is not an option for me. We are staying at FW. I don't think they would appreciate me hooking up my travel trailer in the POP parking lot.

I'm on my phone so I apologize of it would be obvious otherwise! Are you going really soon? It seems to me that only dl is going live in early October.

I had no idea. Thanks.

Unfortunately FW is one of the last going live, on October 21st.

The reports are that it is supposed to take effect at both resorts on the 9th, but it is a little vague.

Guess not. Sorry.

On one hand, I like these changes, because I did see the system being abused during my last trip.

On the other hand, my nephew is Autistic, and it was nice to have the old system last time we went.

I'm going to remain optimistic, and assume that Disney is planning this new system as best as they can. They had to have known ahead of time that people were going to be mad about this, so I imagine they really want the new way to work out well.

But then again, nothing is perfect. If I thought about it long enough, I could probably think of a way to cheat the new system, as well. I guess it's one of those "darned if you do, darned if you don't" things...

I think once FP+ goes live for everybody, on-site and off-site guests, in addition to being able to pull a DAS fastpass AND a regular fastpass you can go at least 4 hours with no downtime considering you have to break for the bathroom and to eat at some point.

That will give you about 2 DAS fastpasses, 2 regular fastpasses and 3 FP+.

That is more than most able bodied ppl do in 6 or 7 hours.

I think this system is more than fair for everybody. Ppl get bent out of shape every time Disney makes any changes.

Once ppl have a chance to try it and see that it is workable for MOST PPL then ppl will settle down some.

I know everybody is writing and calling Disney and signing petitions in hopes of getting them to NOT make this change but I am afraid change is here, like it or not. The days of unlimited fastpass entry is over.

Now everybody has to wait their turn. They will be providing MORE THAN equal access since ppl with a disabled family member will still be getting more than able bodied ppl.

They will get a DAS return time that is 15 minutes LESS than the current wait time. So you don't even have to actually wait as long as everybody else.
They will get to pull DAS fastpasses AND regular fastpasses. And will still be going through the fastpass line. And they can wait wherever they like. They do not have to actually wait IN LINE like everybody else.

And don't tell me to keep my opinion to myself because I don't know what it is like to spend a day in the park with a disabled child because I have 2 special needs kid. I choose not to use a GAC and try to teach my kids how to cope and exist in the world like everyone else. And I am sure there are ppl who have it worse off than I do but I know for a fact there are tons who don't.

I am seeing a theme in these threads about the DAS that most of the ppl crying the loudest are ppl with kids on the spectrum and they are basically saying we deserve this perk because of how hard our life is in every day life. We deserve someplace we can go and get special treatment.

Disney obviously thinks that this new system they are providing cuts out the abuse while still providing equal access to disabled guests. But most of these complaints I see ppl aren't wanting equal access they are wanting better/faster access.

You have the choice (whether your kid can tolerate a long time in the park or not) to go during the same operating hours I do. We are never able to spend a full day open to close like other ppl can either. So I know what all you can get done in 4 hours using only fastpasses.

We choose not to go during school holidays, summer or any time it is very hot outside. I know we can't tolerate crowds and heat. So I make that choice for my family.

This program will work. They make make some minor changes to it as it rolls out and they see what is working with it or might need to change. Like how long they will date your pass for, etc.

But I don't think Disney will ever go back to the old system of letting you have an unlimited fastpass.

And no matter howmuch anybody explains the benefits you will still be getting, folks don't want to hear it. They have heard ALL THEY NEED TO HEAR once they realized there would be no more unlimited fastpasses. They don't want to give it a chance. They like the old way no matter how jammed up it made the lines and who all had extra long wait times because of it or if it didn't work for anybody else besides them. They want what they want.

I have read every thread that has been opened and closed on here so far regarding this issue. And no matter how much ppl discuss it I really don't think anybody is going to change anybody else's mind. Minds are made up that this is just not going to work.

And not to sound snarky but let me give you a little piece of advice, if you were thinking of writing to Disney to threaten that if they do this your family will not come to Disney anymore (I know of ppl who have already) where one family stops coming to Disney 3 or 4 more will take their place.

With record profits in the Billions Disney is pretty smart about how to make money and keep making money. If they though this would affect the bottom line to them in any way they wouldn't have done it.

I think the best thing to do is give the system a chance. Try it. Then write Disney after you try it and let them know what did and didn't work for you. They are already getting thousands of letters from ppl stating that they need nothing short of the same old same old unlimited fastpass GAC.

That's gone. Disney knows the old system was broke and I doubt for any reason will they ever revert back to the old broken system that everyone abused.

It wasn't just ppl faking like they had a kid with autism to get one but also ppl asking for one for high blood pressure, diabetes, knee pain, ADHD, back aches. Anything you can think of, ppl think they deserved a GAC. The system got out of control and they had to stop it.

I know for some ppl this may mean you just can't come to Disney anymore if you can't skip the lines but I am sure Disney knew this too. If you have already been 5 or 10 times then at least you have years of great memories of when you were actually able to go in the park.

But for years ppl have said the GAC didn't cut wait times when in fact we all knew it did. And I don't mean for ppl in wheelchairs who had to wait for a ride car. I mean ppl with hidden disabilities who went through the fatspass line. They all said we don't need to cut the lines we just need an alternate place to wait so little Johnny doesn't harm those around him. Well now you have an alternate place to wait. Exactly what you all always said you needed. You can wait any old place you want to. You just have to wait your turn.

Absolutely! lol and hopefully with the majority of the bugs worked out of it by then too.

I think FP+ is going to be interesting to see in action and how we incorporate it into our touring plans.

Having a disabled family member, or being disabled, or claiming to belong to one of those groups, doesn't, IMO, entitle one to a weighted position or opinion. Let's all try to help one another, please.

hi all, im new to posting on here but am an avid reader of other peoples posts. to start with id just like to say that i am from the uk and have been visiting orlando for over 20 years. most of this has been with family and friends but as a mental health nurse i have visited several times with a patient whos dream it was to see the mouse.
i have visited with people with varying problems from physically disabled right through to those with severe challenging behavior and we are talking full on pull your hair, spit at you and punch you in the face clients not just crying because they dont wanna wait any longer.
now what some people on here dont seem to understand is that the carer, be it a parent or nurse knows the person they are with and knows what makes them tick as well as what makes them explode. for most part the carer can ensure that the public dont get to see a massive explosion as we are always looking for signs and clues to a meltdown and try to steer away from the crowds to calm the situation.
i know at times when i have been supporting a client there the GAC has always been a lifeline as i know when the time is right for my client to be able to get on a ride and with some people it can be a scenario of now or never. i would have to say that the GAC has never allowed the client and myself to ride hop all day as for lots of people with problems there has to be quite a bit of downtime, for myself in the past this has usually meant 2 breaks in the resort room during the day, who is getting on the most rides now?
in november i am visiting again with a client who uses a wheelchair, he also has schizophrenia, although this is well managed, is autistic and can at times tick quite a bit due to tourettes syndrome. now i know this guy very well and would have to say that for the most part i can ensure that people do not see any behaviours happening, but this is only because i can tell when the green light says go for it and the red light says get clear of everyone, you would be surprised at what lenghts some of us go through to ensure that you people out there do not have to experience a bad episode, mainly so your little ones dont get scared.
now having said this, after all the moaning and groaning about the GAC as because your little johnny and sally cant ''get on first'' i would have to say to hell with you all. im gonna be there in november, waiting in the line, and if theres a meltdown which there could be 4 or 5 times daily you are all gonna have to get over it. i understand there have been some people who have taken the piss out of the GAC but really, come on, think about those who are desperate for it. not only so they can enjoy their holiday but also so the public are not privvy to what can sometimes be really bad meltdowns.
i just hope disney look at this on a 1-1 basis and at times see that peoples needs are so great they have to bend the rules, even if this means all you guys standing on your unbending, non-shaking normal perfect legs for a further 5 minutes

I think in this case it's appropriate for you to use the DAS system. It would not be appropriate to put others in harm's way simply because you don't want to wait to ride. This is the onus that is on the user of the DAS system.

Disabled or not, if someone strikes me, pulls my hair, spits on me, or anything else in a line, I am going to report them and insist they are removed immediately, and I will need a good reason why I don't press charges on them as well. Physical assault, whether by the disabled or by the abled, is not appropriate in the public space. Not by children, and not by adults (though I think most people tend to give more leeway to children).

Just be aware that some people might have a history that would lead them to press charges on someone who spits on them or punches them in a line.
