I can't figure out how to copy my files from my Dell!!! I've read the website, talked to tech support at Apple TWICE and have gotten NOWHERE!!!

I thought these were supposed to be EASIER!!!

I just got one, too. I'm having a heck of a time with mine.

Is there a "Mac for Dummies" out there? I may need to invest in a copy!

If you find one, let me know where you got it! I bought mine online, so if I take it to the local Apple store for the genius to move the files it's going to cost me $50! If I had gotten it at the store it would have been FREE. Notice they don't tell you that.

how are you trying to copy them? by networking the machines?

when I switched I didn't have many files so I just dumped them onto a DVD-Rom and moved them that way.

We also share a external drive between PC and Mac.

But you should be able to do it the same way you would do a PC to PC network.

Yeah. We bought ours online, too. It was a "surprise" for me from my DH. I wish he'd have stuck with Dell.

I know we have to get used to it - but why??? Sorry. Whine over.;)

I'll try to do some research and let you know what I find out!

I tried networking, I even connected an ethernet cable directly from the iMac to the PC-nothing. I tried going through my network, I had the iMac connected wirelessly and had the PC connected to the router directly. I don't think that my PC has a DVD writeable drive, so that's out. I just made an appointment for tomorrow at the Apple Store. I guess if I bring both machines they can do it for me. It's worth the money to end the aggravation.

We just use a thumb drive to pull files. although another way though is if you have 2 chat accounts (aim, yahoo etc) you can log into one on your dell and another on the mac, thats originally how i sent all my music from my dell to my ibook. on the mac aim is ichat in case you are having issues finding that.
it took me a bit to get use to the mac but now i cant live without it. the photo software was why i got it but man i love my G (shes a g4 so her name is g).
i will be honest though, i ditched safari and use firefox because i prefered it on the dell to explorer and just found it easier to use for web browsing.
also, make sure you keep up on renewing apple care, if it lapses you cant renew it and its worth it. and if you have a APPLE store near you the genius bar in their stores is great and they offer mac classes that teach you all sorts of tricks and tips for getting use to osX. pirate:

Ok, this should be an easy thing. How do you make a window LARGER. My work window is so tiny I'm going blind slowly

I didn't know how to get that. That's where I got stuck

well that really isn't a Mac issue. ;)

are you using windows xp?

you should be able to find it under my computer, then network connections. It will be in left column under details.

I got my mac for dummies book at my local borders!

I'm still getting used to my mac...so I can offer zero help there...lol!

doesn't make it very much bigger. I just get a border around it

I guess knowing what program would help.

I was thinking Safari because that is what I was using at the time. You may have to stretch it and use something to magnify. For example in Word for Mac there is a % box on the toolbar that you may have to change to make the text bigger.

There is also the green dot (+) that might be helpful depending on the program.

Dear Fitswimmer,
To make the window as big as possible, click the green circle in the upper left corner. This is called maximizing. To close the window, click the red circle.

As for transferring your files, you will have to "share" the drives on your PC. This is not exactly an easy operation, but it wouldn't matter if the new computer was a Mac or a PC. You'd still have to do it, and it can be a hassle. Also, if you've got tens of gigabytes to transfer, it's going to take many hours. Buy an external drive, copy the files from the PC to there, and then hook up the drive to the Mac to copy them back. An external drive is a useful thing to have, so you can make backups.

Just burn the files onto a CD or DVD - it's the easiest way outside of using a USB stick.

When you get used to Macs you'll find them vastly easier and more powerful to use. Of course, there's no way you'll switch and adapt fully on day one!

If you want, the Mac community here on the DIS would be happy to recommend various applications for you to use if you let us know what you want to do :)

I tried to burn my iTunes library to CD, it's too big. I don't think the PC has a DVD rewrite drive. I think I can play them, but not write to them. I was afraid to do the transfer with the iPod, because I was afraid I would lose all my music, TV and movies.

The iMac came with iLife, and I bought Microsoft Office and iWork and have installed those.

Is there something equivilent to windows explorer and My documents in Mac Land? I copied some Word files to a CD and would like to save them someplace.

just double click on the hard drive icon (mine says Macintosh HD but you could have renamed yours)

I also would suggest the external drive route. Not only will it make the transfer easier, you will also have the files as a backup.

I totally agree on the external drive route. You can get them very reasonably from the Apple Shop online. Basically, you'd plug it into the PC, copy your files onto it, plug it into the Mac and copy it over. You'd save yourself the hassle and you'd have an external drive to keep backups on etc. I myself have a 250GB drive and love it!
