Do you say Grocery Store or supermarket? I say grocery store. Is this a regional thing?

They're different things, in my vocabulary. If I'm going to the grocery store, I'm going to the little local place with kind of a crap selection. If I'm going to the supermarket, I'm going to one of the huge chain mega-stores.

I hear them used more or less interchangeably pretty often though.

Grocery store...I never use the word supermarket. We pretty much just shop at Aldi and Costco so I tend to just use the store names.

I have never said supermarket. Around here, everyone I know says grocery store. I only hear supermarket on television. I figure it is regional kind of like "grocery shopping" vs. "food shopping"

Pretty much the same here. I use the store name or grocery store if I had to. I never really hear people say supermarket. Around here it's mostly "Going to Shoprite."

If I had to pick it would be grocery store but like others have said I usually say the store name.

I'm another one that references the name of the store I'm heading to. But in general I refer to them as grocery stores.

I've never heard anyone say supermarket. We just say going to Shoprite or food shopping.

I've heard both, but I usually specify the store I'm going to rather than say generically "grocery store" or "supermarket". I do say "grocery shopping".

I say "going to the grocery" or "grocery store". Deep south.

Make groceries or get a grocery bill is another regional thing said in my area near Louisiana.

We have always just said store. As in we are going to the store, do you need anything.

Commissary. Then again I grew up in a military family.

Now I just use the name of the store we are going to, Smiths, Sprouts, Whole Foods...ect.

I just say store. I am not one who really likes shopping. So it is about the only place I go. If I am in need of something then I name the store. Like Target, Walmart and such.
