Grocery Store or Supermarket

I say grocery store or the specific name. And I use a buggy not a cart.

A bit of supermarket humor.
You know when people get to the check out and say to the cashier "Oh, I don't want this item" and they give it back to the cashier (or at the courtesy counter)? When those things all pile up, here in NJ (I've worked for 2 supermarket companies) we would say we have a "carriage of returns." While in Florida, I heard someone comment "I have a buggy of go-backs" and I could not stop :rotfl:! But I knew exactly what she meant!!

So I guess I call it the supermarket, or just the store name....and I go food shopping.

If I say I'm going shopping, I mean I'm headed to The Mall or someplace similar. If I say I'm going to the grocery, I'm headed to Kroger.

If I'm going someplace that sells food but ISN'T Kroger (like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's), I'll use the name of the store. That's to stop DH from saying, "Well, since you're going to the grocery, pick me up some Doritos."

And we call it a cart, but I like the sound of buggy. :goodvibes

I'm in Texas and call it a Grocery Store and go Grocery Shopping. My Grandma says "I'm going to the Grocery".

My items are placed in a basket, not a cart or buggy- am I the only one?

And when I was in hs and worked at the local big lots we had "go-backs" :)

I go to 'the store' to 'get groceries', or I go 'grocery shopping'. I put the groceries in a cart.

If I were going to Target or Walmart, I'd use the store's name or I'd say that I'm going to 'the mall'.

We say 'the store' to mean a place where you buy foodstuffs.

This can mean Vons, Ralph's, or Fresh and Easy.

Usually just say the store name. "I'm going to Wal-Mart/NuNu's/Rouse's/Sam's," or that I am going "grocery shopping." But I have never ever said supermarket. So I guess between the two, I would say grocery store.

I grew up calling it a basket like my mom, but being with DH so many years, I have become trained to call it a buggy like he does!

In the last 20 years I haven't said either.. and I'm not sure I've heard them. Everyone here says, "I'm going to Wegman's". :cool1:

But if I was talking to an oursider I would say "I'm going grocery shopping."

I hope I'm going to explain this well. When heading into the grocery store, I go grab a cart or a buggy. That's what my daughter sits in. However, when I'm picking out my groceries, if I hand something to my husband or daughter, I will sometimes ask them to put it in the basket. So I guess I use that, as well.

To me, grocery store is for a small local place with veggies, fruit, and the basics while a supermarket is a big store with pretty much everything you need regarding food.

I go to the grocery store. I also put all my stuff in a basket, but I've been known to call it a cart also.

I only knew one person in my area that said "supermarket" and she was from Portugal.

Yes!! This is what I say too. Grocery shopping & it is put into a cart.

If I am going to the Food Lion I say "I'm going to the store, do you want anything?" and I get the reply, "beer"

But if I am going to a different store I used the specific name/nickname like "TheLowesFineFoods" or "Harris TWEETer" because they have different stuff.

I used to say grocery until my DH said "who are you? my grandmother?" :rotfl2:

If I am going to the Food Lion. . .

I had no idea that Food Lion was still in business. They built a bunch of them around here (TX and OK) back in the 1990s, but they all closed (some controversy - I can't even remember what). They built individual buildings when they came in, but they've all been remodeled into churches, gyms, gymnastics/dance places, etc.

We have plenty of them here. In fact, they created a line called "Bloom" that they put in higher income areas that were actually pretty nice. They lasted about three years and I guess they couldn't really compete with the upscale grocery stores so they turned them back into Food Lions.

Yeah, that's pretty much the main store here. The headquarters is in the next town over. I can go to 5 or 6 of them without going out of the way.
