My DD's hair is slightly green from swimming. Do you guys have any tried and true remedies?

Thanks
Margaret

L'oreal kids makes a sea and swim (or something like that) shampoo to help get the green out. My blond hair used to turn really green when I was younger and in swim club.

There is also a brand called Ultra Swim. If you have a Harmon's close by or discount beauty supply store either one should have it, maybe even a regular supermarket.

Usually after a few shampoo's it comes out.

use a clarifying treatment -- I know the Nexxus line had one a few years back

Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three

We also use the L'Oreal kids swim- it is very had to find. I can't get it at a regular Walmart- only a few Super WM's... and it is not in the normal shampoo section, it is with kid's shampoo and soap.

Try a tomato juice rinse.

Here is a simple homemade rinse to stop chlorine’s chemical reaction with your hair...

Wet your hair in a shower. Massage ¼ cup tomato juice into your hair and let set for a few minutes before washing as usual. (This amount of tomato juice is enough for one rinse.) Rinse the tomato juice out of your hair, and then wash as usual.

Hope this helps!

white vinegar (better than tomato juice if she's a blonde).

My hairdresser (who makes house calls) was going to cut dd's hair and it was so tough from swimming - he had her lay down on the counter with it in the sink and we poured white vinegar over it - let it sit for about 5 minutes and then washed normally with shampoo - rinse - then wash again.

It has to do with the acid and the vinegar will strip the hair. Make sure you put good conditioner on afterwards.

He said all the expensive shampoos are a waste - buy a $2 bottle of white vinegar instead. I've since used it successfully on other kids. (although they do smell a bit like a salad for a bit!)

If you wet their hair before they go into the pool and add any conditioner (comb it through their hair) it will lessen the green effect too.

We always get a Malibu treatment from Sallys and it takes the green out. I think they are really cheap, I can't remember, but I want to say around $2.

Another vote for Ultraswim. My very blonde DD had green hair at the beginning of the summer. Then I found Ultraswim and I never looked back!

D is very blonde, loves the water. Tomato paste, or ketchup in a pinch, is the only thing that works for her. Wet hair, massage in the tomato product, let sit for a short time, rinse out then shampoo as needed. The tomato paste stays in place easily...her hair is so soft and blonde after we do this.

As a preventative, try to have her rinse her hair with cold water before getting in the pool. The cold water closes up the hair... which is also why washing hair w/ cold water = head of hair that still looks greasy.
