We just recently had granite counters installed in our kitchen. Its a black granite called Black Galaxy. I have a spray I got at Lowe's to clean but I'm used to using cleaners like 409 when there are spills and stuff.

For those of you with granite especially dark granite, what do you use for everyday cleaning? What about when you've been fooling with raw meat, especially chicken, what do you use to sanitize?

Thanks!

We use Method Granite cleaner for daily cleaning. I think we buy it at Target, but it's a common brand found most stores.

If its been sealed you can treat it as you would normally treat your contertops. I reseal mine every year with Dupont Countertop Granite Sealer. (make sure it says countertop).

I clean mine with regular cleaner and only use the special stuff to make sure its shiny.

You can't really damage granite countertops with non-abrasive cleaners....they just get streaky sometimes.

Windex without ammonia. And I still use a dishwasher safe cutting board for raw meat.

So its okay to keep using the 409 spray? DH is concerned about it. I thought it was okay but everytime he sees me spray it he asks if I should be doing that. I thought I remembered the granite guy saying that the black granite we have is not as pourous or something and we can seal every few year or so if we want. I never asked about cleaning though.

Well, with the house cleaning and granite cleaning threads, I will jump in.

I just use good hot soapy dishwater with plenty of dawn.
If I feel like I need more sanitizing, I will add a splash of Clorox.

I don't do all the sprays and chemicals and residues and fumes!!!!

For things that require window type cleaner, I use Glass Plus which is ammonia free. And I dilute it in the bottle.

Believe me, to most peoples standards, my house is 'clean'!!!
And, Those three things are almost all I ever use.

Had our granite installed less than a year ago, It has been sealed. We were told to use just soap and water. No cleaners at all. Was told cleaners would shorten the life of the sealer. We do not have to do yearly sealing. They said it would be at least 12-15 years before we had to use a sealer. Soap and water only, clean right up and they look great.

I use a dishwasher safe cutting board for raw meat also, but I always use clorox spray on the counter afterwards in case of any drips or whatever.

If you've just had your counters installed, I would contact the store that did it and ask who seals granite. I'm talking a permanent seal. I had my counters done 3 years ago and the place that did the granite gave me the name of the company that does this. Also, as a cleaner, Diamond Seal is a great cleaner and also Original Bee's Wax All Purpose Polish Spray Beeswax 17oz. This cleans granite, glass, wood, etc and does a beautiful job.

I spray it with glass cleaner and wipe it down.
I don't know where everyone gets the idea that granite counters are so delicate and high maintenance.:confused3

From Corian and quartz salesmen.

Agreed. I have had mine for 10 years now and have not had any of the issues you see others talk about on other threads. Through the years I have had laminate, Corian, tile and granite. The granite is the easiest.

I use whatever cleaner I have and paper towels if I am "really" cleaning. Otherwise I use a wet microfiber cloth. No soap etc. I have sealed our countertops I think 3 times in the past 10 years.

I use the Rock Doctor Granite Cleaner. Once a week a may apply Rock Doctor Granite Polish, and once in a blue moon I use the Rock Doctor Granite Sealer.

I love my granite. Easiest thing in the world to take care of. Ill use whatever cleaner I have..Fantastik, 409 and then shine it up with a cleaner for stone. Simple, easy, no mess.

Oh. my brother put in silestone in his kitchen remodel. It's chipped in two places.

I usually just use either liquid castile soap or a mild vinegar/water solution. I don't use "paper towels." I made mine out of flannel....they join together with small velcro strips so they fit on my holder. I use that on almost everything. You don't need expensive cleaners to clean and sanitize.

I just wipe my down with the dish water I used for the dishes. I do use cutting boards to do all the meat stuff on as well but I really only clean that with really hot water and soap as well. Never been sick.

Really how much can be on your counters. Dust in some corners or bread crumbs. :rotfl:
