Grandparent names

Never really got to know any of my grandparents. 2 passed well before I was born. 2 passed before I was 3. But per my cousins, maternal grandmother went by Granny, and paternal by Papa (with last name) and Mama (with her last name). I think my dad originally wanted to also go by Papa, but my son started calling him Poppy, and that stuck. My mom was Grandmama. My inlaws use Grandpa and Grandma, but I think she wanted Me-maw, but nobody else did, I can't quite remember, that was over 20 years ago. In So Louisiana, many go by Maw Maw, and Pawpaw (accents on the last syllables,) I know people who use ALL kinds of names now though, Gigi, Mimi, Grammy, their first names, etc. If I ever have grandkids, I think I want to be something more traditional like Grandmama. We'll see when the time comes....
That video is hilarious!! I love that channel, and I love when they get the grandparents on there, they are so funny!!!

My 7 and 8 yr old grands just left this morning after a weekend with us. I did notice (thanks to this thread) that my granddaughter was calling me Grammy a few times still.

Congratulations!

My grandparents were both Grandma and Grandpa. My dad died when I was a kid and my mom was Grandma to my daughter. Her husband was Pops. My husband’s parents were Nana and Grandpa. My DH’s uncle, twin to his father, is Grandpa Charles to my DD and Zayde to his grandchildren.

I personally love Zayde.

OP, I just wanted to add my congratulations too. There is nothing as special as being a grandparent, to me. It's a special bond, and it's a privilege to be my grandkids and great grands Grandma:) You get to spoil the little ones and then give them back to Mom and Dad, LOL :rolleyes1 It's wonderful:)

I knew immediately that I wanted to be Nonna, as an homage to my full Italian heritage. IAlthough I called the only Grandma that I knew just that - Grandma. You know, immigrants and assimilation. My parents were Ma and PopPop to our kids.

My husband went for Granddad, which is what he used growing up and what our kids called his father.

I will tell you that both of the kids currently call me Nonno, which is a mispronunciation of Nonna. Not sure if it will stay that way or eventually be corrected. Either way is fine with me.

I know that my son, the Italian citizen, and his wife are pleased with my choice, and rumor on the street is that it won't be too long before they're adding to the family! It makes sense to everyone that their American Revolution Dad went with the more traditional Granddad.

Congratulations and enjoy!
