Grandparent names

Never really got to know any of my grandparents. 2 passed well before I was born. 2 passed before I was 3. But per my cousins, maternal grandmother went by Granny, and paternal by Papa (with last name) and Mama (with her last name). I think my dad originally wanted to also go by Papa, but my son started calling him Poppy, and that stuck. My mom was Grandmama. My inlaws use Grandpa and Grandma, but I think she wanted Me-maw, but nobody else did, I can't quite remember, that was over 20 years ago. In So Louisiana, many go by Maw Maw, and Pawpaw (accents on the last syllables,) I know people who use ALL kinds of names now though, Gigi, Mimi, Grammy, their first names, etc. If I ever have grandkids, I think I want to be something more traditional like Grandmama. We'll see when the time comes....
That video is hilarious!! I love that channel, and I love when they get the grandparents on there, they are so funny!!!

Congratulations!

My grandparents were both Grandma and Grandpa. My dad died when I was a kid and my mom was Grandma to my daughter. Her husband was Pops. My husband’s parents were Nana and Grandpa. My DH’s uncle, twin to his father, is Grandpa Charles to my DD and Zayde to his grandchildren.

I personally love Zayde.

I knew immediately that I wanted to be Nonna, as an homage to my full Italian heritage. IAlthough I called the only Grandma that I knew just that - Grandma. You know, immigrants and assimilation. My parents were Ma and PopPop to our kids.

My husband went for Granddad, which is what he used growing up and what our kids called his father.

I will tell you that both of the kids currently call me Nonno, which is a mispronunciation of Nonna. Not sure if it will stay that way or eventually be corrected. Either way is fine with me.

I know that my son, the Italian citizen, and his wife are pleased with my choice, and rumor on the street is that it won't be too long before they're adding to the family! It makes sense to everyone that their American Revolution Dad went with the more traditional Granddad.

Congratulations and enjoy!

Why not wait and see what they call you?

My dad is Papa because that’s what my daughter (the oldest grandchild) decided she wanted to call him. All the other grandkids call him that too. My mom is Grandma.

I had a Grandma, Grandpa and Nana (her husband died when my dad was little and made my Nana promise [on his deathbed] that she would never remarry).

My paternal grandparents were Nana and Papa.
Maternal grandmother was called “Grandmother”. She buried 3 husbands and none of them were alive at my birth so no name for Mommy’s father beyond “Daddy”.

The ex called one of his grandmothers “Mémé”.

My Mommy was called “Grandma or Beda” by her grands. Her former husband died knowing only one grandson, and I really don’t recall what his diminutive was.

I am a “Nonnie” and the Man was an “Ompah”.

Congratulations on your forthcoming elevation.

I never understood the idea of not calling grandparents anything until the child decides? So my daughter would tell grandson “Nana and Granddad are coming to visit”. How would you explain who these people are without names. Grandson has friends at preschool. He doesn’t get to name them either.

I think it is sad your Nana was forced to live a single life after her first husband died. Seems rather selfish of him depriving her of a choice.

This! Parents are going to refer to their parents when talking to the child... "Grammy and Garmps are coming over!" or "Nana and Papa sent you a toy!" The names might "change" if the child has issues pronouncing them, but there needs to be a start.

My plan was to be 'Gramma' for my grandchild, but in her two year old wisdom, she has named me 'Gamma'. Which is better than the earlier, Grabby, which started out as Crabby.

IDK, we referred to my parents as grandma and grandpa, and the names my kid came up with are completely different. So yeah, parents choose to name the grandparents something but in the end it's still up to the kid.

But the point is you can't really wait for the child to decide. We called my parents Grammy and Zayde before our oldest was born. The names stuck.
